  • Owing to rapid development of power device and inverters, most of submarines adopt an eletric propulsion system. Although PMPM(Permanent Magnet Propulsion Motor) propulsion system has relatively higher power, energy conversion efficiency and smaller volume than engine propulsion system, it also produces large amount of heat due to current flowing inside motor coils and change of magnetic field induced by iron core. The produced heat in stator and inverter largely affects motor efficiency and bearing lubrication and causes thermal aging while the system is on operation. So, we analyze the existing cooling system and submarine ESS (Energy Saving System) cooling system whose power consumption is reduced. HILS(Hardware In the Loop System) technique is used for the modelling of the submarine cooling system. To confirm the ESS cooling system characteristic, HILS is simulated using LabVIEW with hardware. As a result, the ESS cooling system has the characteristic of better temperature stability and less power consumption than the existing one.

  • The injection molding process is widely used in the production of most plastic products. In order to make metal-colored plastic products like those found in modern luxury home alliances, metallic pigments are mixed with a basic resin material for injection molding. However, process control for metal-colored plastic products is extremely difficult due to the non-uniform melt flow of the metallic resin pigments. In this study, the effect of process parameters on the quality of a metal-colored plastic product is evaluated. A rapid mold cooling method using a compressed cryogenic fluid is also proposed to decrease the content of undesired compounds within the plastic product.

  • In all larger hardmetal workshops furnaces for dewaxing, vacuum sintering or vacuum and overpressure sintering are today's standard. The furnace technology is well established. Equipment specifications such as operating overpressure, determine sintering cost, product quality, safety and reliability of the furnace and ultimately influence the competitiveness of the hard metal procucer in the global market. Essential furnace requirements are an efficient utilization of the furnace, an environmental friendly dewaxing system, high temperature uniformity, metallurgical treatment with process gases, as well as reduced cooling time by means of rapid cooling. Examples of reduced sintering costs are described achieved using a new design of vacuum sintering furnace with an improved rapid cooling device, cooling times are reduced by up to 45%. Additionally, a cost comparison of two different designs of vacuum overpressure sintering furnaces are included.

  • Injection molding is a cyclic process comprising of cooling phase as the largest part of this cycle. Providing efficient cooling in lesser cycle times is of significant importance in the molding industry. Recently, lots of researches have been done for rapid cooling of a hot-spot area using CO2 in injection molding. The CO2 flows under high pressure through small, flexible capillary tubes to the point of use, where it expands to create a snow and gas mixture at a temperature of -79℃. The gaseous CO2 removes heat from the mold and releases it into the atmosphere. In this paper, a CO2 cooling module was applied to an injection mold in order to cool a large area cavity uniformly and quickly, and the cooling performance of the injection mold was investigated. The product was a high-curvature molded part with a molding area of 300x100mm. Heat cartridges were installed in a stationary mold, and CO2 cooling module was inserted inside a movable mold. Through structural analysis, it was confirmed that the maximum deformation of mold with CO2 cooling module was 0.09mm. A CO2 feed system with a heat exchanger was used for cooling experiments. The CO2 was injected into the holes on both sides of the supply pipe of the cooling module and discharged through hexagon blocks to cool the mold. It took 5.8 seconds to cool the mold from an average temperature of 140℃ to 70℃. Through the experiment using CO2 cooling module, it was found that a cooling rate of up to 12.98℃/s and an average of 10.18℃/s could be achieved.

  • Amorphous alloys have also been called glassy alloys or non-crystalline alloys. They are made by the rapid solidification. The solidification occurs so rapid that the atoms are frozen in their liquid configuration. There are unique magnetic, mechanical, electrical and corrosive behaviors which result form their amorphous structure. In the study. amorphous coatings were manufactured with Ni-Cr-B-Si powders by flame spray. Measurement of hardness, were resistance, corrosion resistance and observation of microstructures and XRD, DSC were performed to investigate characteristics of amorphous coatings. The experimental results obtained as follow: 1) Amorphous powders could not be manufactured with the spraying in the spraying in the liquid nitrogen. But, amorphous coatings could be manufactured with the rotation cooling method by liquid nitrogen. In the fabrication of amorphous coatings, major factor was the rapid cooling by rotation of the substrate. 2) Hardness of coatings was obtained Hv 960 by formation of amorphous phase. But, wear resistance decreased. That was due to porosity in the coatings by the rapid cooling. 3) In the case of corrosion resistance, amorphous coatings were superior to air-cooled coatings. That was due to formation of amorphous phase. 4) After amorphous coatings were heat-treated at 520℃ for 1hr. hardness increased 80% and wear resistance increased 30% comparing with air cooled coatings. These were due to crystallization of amorphous phase and decrease of porosity by heat-treatment.

  • An innovative safety concept for a light water reactor has been developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. It is a unique concept that adopts both a fast heat transfer mechanism for a small containment and a changing mechanism of the cooling geometry to take advantage of the potential, thermal, and dynamic energies of the cold water in the containment. It can bring about rapid cooling of the containment and long-term cooling of the decay heat. By virtue of this innovative concept, nuclear fuel damage events can be prevented. The ultimate heat transfer mechanism contributes to minimization of the heat exchanger size and containment volume. A small containment can ensure the underground construction, which can use river or seawater as an ultimate heat sink. The changing mechanism of the cooling geometry simplifies several safety systems and unifies diverse functions. Simplicity of the present safety system does not require any operator actions during events or accidents. Therefore, the unique safety concept of PX can realize both economic competitiveness and inherent safety.

  • This study was initiated to improve the cooling water quality by chemical coagulation and sedimentation in steel mills. Due to the inefficient flocculation in the settling tanks of blast furnace cooling water systems, the solid particles in the cooling water overflow accumulate and clog the cooling system. To protect the cooling water system from such fouling, proper flocculants must be continuously used. Laboratory tests were performed for the indirect cooling water system of a plate mill. The batch test in the gas scrubbing cooling water system of a blast furnace showed that the proposed coagulant was more effective for the improvement of coagulation and sedimentation than the existing one. During the tests, cationic flocculants were more effective than use of only an anionic flocculant. The suggested combination of anionic and cationic flocculants can probably improve the turbidity removal efficiency of the cooling water. Proper control of the overflow rate by the designed residence time would help turbidity removal efficiency in the settling tank. In addition, the settling can be enhanced by adopting rapid and slow mixing alternatively. Scale problems in blast furnace cooling water system were reduced to some extent by efficient settling.

  • Current leads of high $T_{c}$ superconductor were fabricated with Bi excess B $i_{2.2}$/S $r_{1.8}$/C $a_{1}$/C $u_{2}$/ $O_{x}$ composition by rapid cooling method. The dimensions of final samples were fixed 3 mm and 8 mm diameter with 50 mm length each To control uniform density the samples were preformed by CIP(Cold Isostatic Press) process and followed by partial or full melting process after raising up to 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min. Plate shaped microstructure was clearly observed adjacent to the Ag tube wall and the size of plate was about 100$\mu$m. However the severe destruction of growth orientation was shown in the inner growth part. critical temperature ( $T_{c}$) was about 53~71K after directional growth while Tc was decreased about 77~80 K before directional growth. After directional growth critical current( $I_{c}$) and critical current density( $J_{c}$) in the specimen of 8 mm diameter at 50 K were about 110 A and 280 A/c $m^2$ respectively.pectively.ely.

  • LED has the merits of high reliability, semi-permanent life, rapid-response and its small size for use as light source of head lamp. But the dependence of its performance and life on temperature affect on its practical use. Which dependence makes problem when the LED is heated up to a higher temperature level by self-generation of heat, due to "highly integration" to get enough quantity of light. To solve this problem, effective cooling system is needed that consider conduction, convection and radiation. This study points out the limits of natural convection cooling system and propose of forced convection with heat sink. Also, it describes a correlation between heat sink area and fluid velocity using numerical analysis to optimize the cooling system.
