  • Natural convection of a two dimensional laminar steady-state incompressible fluid flow in a rectangular enclosure has been investigated numerically for low aspect ratios with the physical vapor transport crystal growth. Results show that for aspect ratio (Ar = L/H) range of $0.1{\leq}Ar{\leq}1.5$, with the increase in Grashof number by one order of magnitude, the total mass flux is much augmented, and is exponentially decayed with the aspect ratio. Velocity and temperature profiles are presented at the mid-width of the rectangular enclosure. It is found that the effect of Grashof number on mass transfer is less significant when the enclosure is shallow (Ar = 0.1) and the influence of aspect ratio is stranger when the enclosure is tall and the Grashof number is high. Therefore, the convective phenomena are greatly affected by the variation of aspect ratios.

  • DOP aerosol particles with geometric mean diameter of 0.5-3.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, geometric standard deviation of 1.1-1.3 and total number concentration of 1,500-8,000 Particles/㎤ were used to determine collection efficiencies of a packed wet scrubber with respect to particle size. The tested operating variables included air velocity and water injection rate. It was shown from the experimental results that the collection efficiencies increased with increasing water injection rate and decreasing air velocity. Meanwhile, as for the particle size variation, all of the collection efficiency curves increased rapidly between 0.57-1.41${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for the range of water injection rate above 30 L/min. It was also seen that the collection efficiency of a packed wet scrubber is mainly governed by the mechanism of inertial impaction.

  • Transmission X-ray tubes based on carbon nanotube have attracted significant attention recently. In most of these tubes, tungsten is used as the target material. In this article, the well-known simulator Geant4 was used to obtain some of the tungsten target parameters. The optimal thickness for maximum production of usable X-rays when the target is exposed to electron beams of different energies was obtained. The linear variation of optimal thickness of the target for different electron energies was also obtained. The data obtained in this study can be used to design X-ray tubes. A beryllium window was considered for the X-ray tube. The X-ray energy spectra at the moment of production and after passing through the target and window for different electron energies in the 30-110 keV range were also obtained. The results obtained show that with a specific thickness, the target material itself can act as filter, which enables generation of X-rays with a limited energy.

  • Shapiro and Wilk (1972) developed a test for exponentiality with origin and scale unknown. The procedure consists of comparing the generalized least squares estimate of scale with the estimate of scale given by the sample variance. However the test statistic is inconsistent ; that is, the power of the test will not approach 1 as the sample size increases. Hence we give a test based on the ratio of two asymptotically efficient estimates of scale. We also have conducted a power study to compare the test procedures, using Monte Carlo samples from a wide range of alternatives. It is found that the suggested statistics have higher power for the alternatives with the coefficient of variation greater that or equal to 1.

  • Recently, atmospheric pressure plasmas attract lots of interests for the useful applications such as surface modification and bio-medical treatment. In this study, a particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision (PIC-MCC) simulation was adopted to investigate the discharge characteristics of a planar micro dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with a driving frequency from 13.56 MHz to 162.72 MHz and with a gap distance of 80 micrometers. The variation of frequency, in the change in the electron energy probability function (EEPF). Through the relation between the ion trajectories and the frequency, results in the change of EEPFs is achievable with the turning point of frequency mode. Therefore, it is possible to categorize the efficient operation range of DBDs for its applications by controlling the interactions between plasmas and neutral gas for the generation of preferable radicals.

  • Di-2-pyridylmethanon 2-thiophenecarboxylie hydrazone(DPMTCH) was synthesized and used as a chromogenic reagent in the spectrophotometric determination of nickel in steel. The proton disc spectrophotometrically, were $pK_{a1}= 2.66$ and $pK_{a2}= 10.98$ ${\mu}=0.5(NaCl)$. Nickel(II) reacts with DPMTCH to form a 1:2 metal-2-ligand ratio complex, the xylene solution of which has an absorption maximum at 417 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over the range $0-1.17\;mg\;ml^{-1}$ of nickel(II). The molar absorptivity of the nickel(II) complex is $4.17{\times}10^4l\;mol^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$. The precision of the method was estimated for 4.7 mg of nickel(II), the coefficient of variation for 15 replicate determinations being 0.34%.

  • A new spectrophotemetric method was estalished for the determination of oleic acid. This method is based on the 1,2-dichloroe-thane extraction of the ion-pair formed between methylene blue and oleic acid. But the absorbance of an ion-pair in the 1,2-dichloroe-thane layer was variable with the temperature, the ion-pair was extracted back into a diluted hydrochloric acid solution. The maximum absorbance of the acid extract observed at $660m{\mu}$ and a lineal relationship was observed from the initial amount over the range of $50-800{\gamma}/ml$ of oleic acid in the aqueous phase. The composition ratio of the ion-pair formed between methylene blue and oleic acid was determined to be 2 : 1 by both the mole ratio and continuous variation methods.

  • In this paper, a new formula for primary and secondary thrust of metal belt CVT is proposed considering variation of band tension, block compression and active arc for each of the primary and secondary pulleys. For the secondary thrust, effective friction coefficient is introduced considering the effect of flange deflection. Nondimensional primary and secondary thrust of the metal belt CVT by the new formula agree well with the experimental results except for low torque range, $0\;<\;{\lambda}\;<\;0.2$ at speed ration i = 1.0. The new formula can be used in design of the primary and secondary thrusts control system for the metal belt CVT.

  • The evolution of the stellar debris after tidal disruption due to the super massive black hole's tidal force is difficult to solve numerically because of the large dynamical range of the problem. We developed an SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) - TVD (Total Variation Diminishing) hybrid code in which the SPH is used to cover a widely spread debris and the TVD is used to compute the stream collision more accurately. While the code in the present form is not sufficient to obtain desired resoultion, it could provide a useful tool in studying the aftermath of the stellar disruption by a massive black hole.

  • Liquid breakup under the variation of AC frequency has been studied experimentally in the electrohydrodynamic atomization. The effect of parameters such as charging voltage, flow rate, nozzle tip inner diameter and power frequency have been considered. This work was performed to investigate the experimental analysis for the effect of AC frequency on breakup process, the mapping of occurrence of disintegration region, and the relationship between the applied power and the droplet radius. The experimental results show that the increase of applied voltage in a certain frequency band leads to a reduction in the droplet size within the limits from 50Hz to 400Hz. The transition phenomena from dripping mode to spindle mode were observed under the band of sudden fall of droplet radius changing ratio, and the synchronous region were produced within the range of applied voltage from 5kV to 6kV.
