Characteristics of the Concentration Process of Lactobacillus Cell Using a Ceramic Membrane (세라믹막을 이용한 Lactobacillus cell의 농축 공정의 특성)

  • It is an anaerobic germ that Lactobacillus cell concentrated using ceramic membrane has high stability and long lifetime as compared with polymeric membrane. The effects of operating pressure, temperature, crossflow velocity on cell harvesting have been studied. Also the variation of flux and transmembrane pressure (TMP) with increasing concentration ratio and the change of TMP at constant concentration ratio (volumetric concentration factor: VCF) regarding the optimization have been examined. It showed that the permeate flux increased gradually with the increasing of transmembrane pressure, crossflow velocity, and volumetric concentration factor. The higher initial flux was due to the reduction of viscosity at elevated temperature. However, as operating time progressed, the effect of temperature was negligible since the effect of viscosity became minor. As a result, that operate in a constant concentration ratio, decreased degree could know that become slowly although the flux decreases according as operating time progressed. The flux is a very stable in the condition of constant VCF range. The yield of Latobaciilus (PS 406) which was cultivated at $37^{\circ}C$ was concentrated about 4.9{\times}10^9$ after operation.

A Study of Carbon Monoxide Oxidation on ZnO Single Crystal Surface (산화아연 단결정 면에서 일산화탄소의 산화반응에 대한 연구)

  • The properties of oxidation reactions of carbon monoxide on ZnO (1010) were studied at the temperature range of 298∼573 K by measuring the capacitance and conductance in the insulating layer of two contacting crystal faces which vary with ZnO-gas interaction mechanisms. Exposure of the sample to CO resulted in an increase in the layer depth at 298∼373 K, while it decreased above 473 K. But the variation of the layer depth was very small in all measurements. When CO was admitted to the sample previously treated with $O_2$ at the same temperature, we observed the different features compared with the case of CO adsorption. From these results we discussed the mechanisms of CO oxidation in connection with the adsorbed oxygen species at each temperature.

  • The heat transfer and flow characteristics of gas turbine blade tip were investigated in this paper by using the conjugate heat transfer analysis. The rotor inlet boundary condition profile which was taken from the first stage nozzle outlet was used to analyse. The profile contained the velocity and temperature information. This study presents the influence of tip clearance about aerodynamic loss, heat transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness with the squealer tip designed blade model which tip clearance variation range from 1% to 2.5% of span. Results showed that the aerodynamic loss and the heat transfer coefficient were increased when the tip clearance was increased. Especially when the tip clearance was 2% of the span, the average heat transfer coefficient on the tip region was increased obviously. The film cooling effectiveness of tip region was increasing with decreasing of the tip clearance. There was high film cooling effectiveness at cavity and near tip hole region.

Inter-annual Variation of Tides on the Western Coasts of Korea (서해 연안에서 조석특성의 경년변화)

  • Harmonic analysis of tide data observed on the western coasts has been conducted. The changing trends of harmonic constants were reviewed. Overall, amplitudes of semidiurnal tide are not changed and present phases are faster than in the past. In Mokpo located in a semi-enclosed bay, the amplitudes have been greatly increased and the phases have become earlier due to construction of sea-dike and seawalls. Harmonic constants of diurnal tide have not been changed except Mokpo. In Mokpo the phases of diurnal tide have been earlier. Tidal ranges in spring tide and neap tide have not been significantly changed except Mokpo. In Mokpo tidal ranges have been increased and tidal flats widened. Approximate higher high water has been overall rising. Therefore, Korean western coasts can be easily inundated than before.

  • The ISFET glucose and sucrose sensors containing platinum electrode and photopolymeric enzyme membrane were fabricated. The platinum working electrode was used for the electrolysis of hydrogen peroxide, which was the other product of the enzyme reaction, to improve sensing characteristics of the sensors. In order to improve response time, photo-crosslinkable polymer(PVA-SbQ) was used to the matrix for the enzyme immobilized membrane. The characteristics of glucose and sucrose sensors were investigated according to the variation of platinum electrode area. The response time was about $3{\sim}5$ minutes and determinations of glucose and sucrose in the range of about $30{\sim}300mg/dl$ could be possible.

Assessment of Phytochemicals, Quality Attributes, and Antioxidant Activities in Commercial Tomato Cultivars

  • To assess South Korean commercial tomato cultivars, regular and cherry tomato cultivars were grown in the greenhouse and evaluated for color attributes, titratable acidity, pH, total soluble solids, carotenoids (lycopene and ${\beta}$-carotene), total phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, and antioxidant activity. Significant differences (p < 0.05 using Duncan's multiple range test (DMRT)) were observed in the levels of most phytochemicals, quality parameters, and antioxidant activity among the twenty South Korean tomato cultivars tested. Lycopene and ${\beta}$-carotene contents varied significantly (p < 0.05 using DMRT), from $0.95mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ to $5.12mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ and $0.65mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ to $3.56mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$ of fresh weight, respectively. ${\beta}$-carotene contents exhibited the highest genetic variation (59.2%), followed by naringenin (52.8%) and other phytochemicals. Most of the cherry tomato cultivars had statistically higher levels (p < 0.05 using DMRT) of carotenoids, phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, and antioxidant activity compared to the regular tomato varieties, suggesting their higher nutritional value. Lycopene content was highest in the cultivars YoYo, Jicored, Titi-Chal, TY-Endorphin, and Rubyking. Cultivars Rubyking, TY-Endorphin, and Titi-Chal also showed relatively higher antioxidant activities in three assays: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. All the antioxidants, except luteolin, were positively correlated with antioxidant activities; the highest correlation was observed between total phenol and antioxidant activities, followed by the correlation between rutin and vitamin C. Cultivars identified to have superior nutritional status would be useful in tomato breeding programs to further improve quality and health benefits of tomatoes for the fresh and processed markets.

A study on the maneuverabilities of the marine research vessel CHARMBADA (해양조사선 참바다호의 조종성능에 관한 연구)

  • This study was intended to determine the maneuverability of the vessel CHARMBADA. When the rudder angle was at $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, the maximum advance by slow, half and full ahead were varied in the range of 523.6-131.3m, 528.8-177.2m and 530.6-219.7m, respectively. The maximum transfer was 799.9-181.3m, 792.1-232.8m and 807.7-316.9m, respectively. The turning circle ability was better during starboard turning. When the rudder angle was $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, variation in the maximum advances was 392.0m, 245.0m and 153.0m. The maximum transfer was 528.0m, 339.0m and 218.0m, respectively based on the regression equations. As the rudder angle became bigger, the maximum advance or maximum transfer became smaller by the exponential function. The advance inertia took 127sec, 145sec, 181sec each until the vessel speed was 7.0konts, 12.0konts, 17.0konts. The static inertia took 245sec, 269sec, 300sec each until the vessel speed was under 2.0konts and the advance distance was 114.4m, 181.2m, 197.0m each. Accordingly, the static inertia was inclined to increase to scale according to the increase in vessel speed. For the CHARMBADA, the smaller the rudder angle was, the much bigger the turning circle became due to adhesion to the skeg, thereby lowering the vessel's turning ability.

Gasification of Crude Glycerin for Liquid Fuel Production (액체연료 생산을 위한 폐글리세린의 가스화 기술 개발)

  • Production and application of biodiesel are expected to grow steadily in the coming years and thus output of its by-product, crude glycerin, will accordingly increase as well. In the present study, gasification of biodiesel by-product as a renewable energy was performed in an entrained flow gasifier to investigate the gasification performance with the operating conditions. Crude glycerin shows a high heating value of 6,000 kcal/kg and low ash and sulphur content. Gasification was conducted in a temperature range of $950\;{\sim}\;1500\;^{\circ}C$. The variation of syngas composition with excess air ratio of 0.17 ~ 0.7 for air or oxygen as a gasification agent was investigated. From the results, syngas heating value, carbon conversion and cold gas efficiency of more than $2500\;kcal/Nm^3$, 95% and 65% were achieved, respectively. The temperature dependency of syngas composition, carbon conversion, and cold gas efficiency shows a similar tendency to excess air ratio at the temperature corresponding to the excess air ratio. The $H_2/CO$ ratio of the product gas was varied from 1.25 to 0.7 with the excess air ratio and this gas composition was favorable for DME synthesis. The optimum excess air ratio for gasification of biodiesel by-product was evaluated to be an approximately 0.35 to 0.4. The present results indicate that crude glycerin can be utilized as a feedstock for gasification to make syngas.

Influence of Co-Habitation on a Family Line Resemblance in Nutrient and Food-Group Intake among Three Generations of Japanese Women

  • Although a generation-related difference in nutrient and food-group intake has been broadly recognized in the Japanese population, few studies have examined the difference and correlation of intakes with consideration of a family line and co-habitation status. We conducted a dietary survey using female college students in dietetic course in Aichi, Japan, and their mothers and grandmothers. A validated self-administered diet history questionnaire was used for assessment of intakes. Data from 110 families were included in the analysis. The means of 13 nutrients and 10 food groups (of the 15 and 14, respectively) showed significant differences among the three generations. A significant difference was observed in the carbohydrate, protein, saturated fatty acid, cholesterol, and fish intakes between the students living with their mothers and those apart. In the correlation analyses between generations, moderate correlation was observed for most nutrients and food groups between the students and their mothers living together (correlation range = 0.30-0.61 for nutrients, and = 0.21 -0.56 for food groups). A wide variation with no consistency was observed for the correlation between the students and their grandmothers (-0.18 -0.59 and -0.33 -0.65, respectively), No meaningful correlation was observed between any two generations living apart. Among the food groups examined, pulses, fish, and vegetables showed relatively large differences for the correlation between two groups with different living conditions. When living together, the correlation coefficients for nutrients and food groups between the students and their mothers decreased according to the increase in frequency of eating out by the students. These results suggest that living together and eating together were an important factor for the resemblance in dietary habits between generations in the population with a marked generation-related difference in intakes. Effect of Low Concentration Liquid Manure application on Soil Water and Groundwater Quality in Bio-Circulation Experimental Forest (바이오순환림의 저농도액비 시용에 따른 토양수 및 지하수 수질 영향 분석)

  • Manure recycling as fertilizer is one of solutions for the environmental problem related with livestock manure treatment as well as the ocean dumping ban act prohibiting manure disposal to the ocean. For the manure disposal, forest area can be a candidate place because the area has a wide range of applicable sites. However, the manure application to the forest has a possibility of causing environmental impacts including water quality problems due to nutrient loading. Therefore it is necessary to investigate water quality impact from manure disposal to the forestry plantation. In this study, ground and soil water quality had been monitored in the bio-circulation experimental forest where low concentration liquid manure (LCLM) was applied. Soil and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed weekly from April to October in 2008 and 2009. The mean and variation of NO3-N concentration in soil water of LCLM treatment places showed higher concentration than the reference places declining during growing season. In the case of groundwater from monitoring well in the downstream of disposal site, the $NO_3$-N concentration was 3.59 mg/L in 2008 and 3.26 mg/L in 2009 in average showing higher concentration than the reference well although the concentration was not exceed the national drinking water standard. To investigate the source of nitrate, $\delta^{15}N$ isotope analysis was also implemented. Its result showed that the LCLM application could be the nitrate source requiring further long-term monitoring soil and water quality.
