Purpose: This study compared the effectiveness of sling exercise and McKenzie exercise in patients with acute cervical whiplash associated disorder (WAD) caused by rear-end collision. Methods: Thirty WAD patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups; a sling exercise (SE) group, a McKenzie exercise (McE) group, and a control group. Members of the SE and McE exercised three times a week for four weeks under the researcher's guidance. Three groups performed TENS treatment three times a week for four weeks. Diagnostic radiological equipment was used to measure whiplash injury. Visual analog scale (VAS), neck disability index (NDI), and range of motion (ROM) were used in this study. Results: The three groups showed a significant pre-post treatment difference in measures of VAS and NDI (p<0.05). The SE group showed a significant pre-post treatment difference in measures of flexion and extension changes compared to the McE and control group (p<0.05). The SE group also showed significantly greater improvement in the VAS, NDI, and ROM changes than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings indicate that sling exercise is a stronger and more aggressive intervention for treatment of acute WAD patients.
The number of the subjects of this study were all sixteen including 8 male and 8 female. They were chronic low back pain patients and treated at hospital out patient. The patients took lumbar extension strength training. The results of examination and analysis isometric lumbar extension muscular strength before and after the training are as follows; 1. TFT increased after lumbar extension muscular strength exercise than before the exercise. Inspire of difference of each angle. The reciprocal action didn't happen between training and angle. 2. NMT increased after lumbar extension muscular strength exercise than the before the exercise and the difference of each angle didn't happen. The reciprocal action also didn't happen between the training and angle. 3. Comparing presented standard point with individual point, 13persons' muscle strength of first step increased, on the other and 3 person's muscle strength a little increased in a same category. 4. The grade of low back pain decreased for all subjects. Concluding this study, lumbar extension muscular strength exercise through isokinetic device decreases the grade of low back pain and increase lumbar extension muscular strength. Purpose : This meta-analysis was aimed at guiding future research in stroke treatment and to provide real-world data relating to the effects of aquatic exercise therapy on balance in patients with chronic stroke. Methods : We performed a meta-analysis comprising 22 studies involving aquatic exercise therapy performed between 2006 and 2017. A meta-analysis software program was used to calculate the mean effect size, effect size by intervention, and effect size by outcome. We also performed a meta-regression analysis and an analysis of publishing bias. Results : The mean effect size was 0.563. The effect size by outcome was observed to be the largest for the functional reach test, followed by the Berg balance scale, balance equipment, the Timed Up and Go test and one leg standing. Meta-regression analysis showed that effect size increased with an increase in the duration, number, length of exercise session. Conclusion : Aquatic exercise therapy appears to show a moderate effect on balance in patients with chronic stroke. A meta-analysis is warranted for further research to determine the effects of aquatic exercise on walking, muscle strength, and range of motion.
Background : The purpose of this study was to investigate on the ankle pain, Range of Motion(ROM) and balance ability with old man have fall down experience used to ankle strengthening exercise for 6 weeks. We introduced ankle strengthening exercise in this study in order to recover the pain, ankle ROM and balance ability. Methods : Twenty-four old mans have fall down experience were included for the study. Among them, twelve old mans(experimental group) were ankle strengthening exercise and physical science methods(H/P, TENS, U/S), another twelve old mans(control group) were treated by physical science methods(H/P, TENS, U/S). Each group made use of Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) to pain and goniometer to ankle ROM and Berg Balance Test(BBS) to balance ability to compare the possible changes of pain, ROM and balance ability in two groups after treatment. Results : In experimental group, pain reduced, ankle ROM has increased in dorsi-flexion, plantar-flexion and balance ability has increased for 6 weeks. In control group, pain reduced, ankle ROM has not changed in dorsi-flextion, plantar-flextion and balance ability has not changed for 6 weeks. Conclusion : According to the results, we concluded that ankle strengthening exercise for 6 weeks is effective for reducing pain and increasing ankle ROM and balance ability. Therefore, we thought the old man have fall dawn experience need ankle strengthening exercise for prevention repeatedly fall down.
Background: Thoracic spine self-mobilization exercise is commonly used to manage patients with neck pain. However, no previous studies have investigated the effects of thoracic spine self-mobilization exercise alone in patients with chronic neck pain. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of thoracic self-mobilization using a tool on cervical range of motion (ROM), disability level, upper body posture, pain and fear-avoidance beliefs questionnaire (FABQ) in patients with chronic neck pain. Methods: The subjects were 49 patients (21 males, 28 females) with chronic neck pain. The subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG, n = 23) and control group (CG, n = 26). For the EG, thoracic self-mobilization was applied. We placed a tool (made with 2 tennis balls) under 3 different vertebral levels (T1-4, T5-8, T9-12) of the thoracic spine and the subjects performed crunches, which included thoracic flexion and extension in supine position. Five times × 3 sets for each levels, twice a week, for 4 weeks. Cervical pain, disability, upper body posture, FABQ results, and ROM were evaluated at baseline, after 4 weeks of intervention, and at 8 weeks of follow-up. Assessments included the quadruple visual analogue scale (QVAS); Northwick Park neck pain questionnaire (NPQ); craniovertebral angles (CVA), forward shoulder angle (FSA) and kyphosis angle (KA) measurements for upper body posture; FABQ and cervical ROM testing. Results: The EG showed a statistically significant improvement after intervention in the QVAS (-51.16%); NPQ (-53.46%); flexion (20.95%), extension (25.32%), left rotation (14.04%), and right rotation (25.32%) in the ROM of the cervical joint; KA (-7.14%); CVA (9.82%); and FSA (-4.12%). Conclusion: These results suggest that, for patients with chronic neck pain, thoracic self-mobilization exercise using a tool (tennis balls) is effective to improve neck pain, disability level, the ROM, and upper body posture.
The objective of this study is to investigate the market of fitness compression wear as well as to design an optimal fitness compression wear by analyzing the muscle and movement characteristics of the elderly women in Korea. In this regard, research for functional garments is needed to increase muscle activity of elderly people during physical exercise. Firstly, we investigated the brand, design, size, material, and pattern of fitness wear based on the market survey. Secondly, we identified preference, evaluation items, evaluation method, and pattern design method based on the literature review. Finally, in addition, the motion type, range, angle to improve the muscle strength of the elderly were investigated and the maximum muscle strengths of each motion were analyzed by using 2007 Size Korea data (n = 386). It is also designed for muscle fatigue through exercise and rapid fatigue recovery after exercise. The evaluation methods for fitness compression wear were classified as motor functionality, physiological comfort, pattern and material suitability evaluations. The muscle strength at leg (pushing force) and waist (lifting force) of the ages of 60 to 69 years old showed 239.3 N and 274.5 N, respectively, which were the lowest forces compared to younger age groups. By applying these results to the design process of fitness wear, it is anticipated that the fitness wear will have a proper fit to the body shape of elderly people in South Korea as well as it can increase muscle efficiency to promote physical capability and healthy life for senior people.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ten minutes of manual passive exercise performed by physical therapists on autonomic nervous system. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy adults, both male and female, were chosen as subjects for this study. The autonomic nervous system was measured by heart rate variability (HRV),before and after passive exercise using the following measurements: mean heart rate (mean HRT), low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) components, the LF/HF ratio, root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD), and the HRV index. The exercise was performed on the subjects by a physical therapist with seven years of experience specializing in the nervous system. The exercise was conducted at the mid-range of motion on the upper and lower limbs of the subjects for two minutes and thirty seconds and for a total of ten minutes. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in the LF component. The mean HRT and the LF/HF ratio both increased, but these increases were not significant. The HF component, RMSSD, and HRV index all decreased, but these decreases were not significant. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, mid-range manual passive exercise does not induce stress on the autonomic nervous system. It can safely be performed by a physical therapist.

Background: This study examined the effects of the muscle energy technique and cervical traction after applying conservative physical therapy in patients with cervical radiculopathy. Methods: Patients were randomly divided into two groups muscle energy technique (8 subjects) and cervical traction (8 subjects). Each group performed their exercise 70 minutes per day, three times week for four weeks. Pain intensity was measured with a visual analogue scale (VAS). Function was measured with the neck disability index (NDI). Cervical range of motion (ROM) was measured with a cervical range of motion (CROM) goniometer. Results: After four weeks of therapy, VAS (p<.05) and NDI (p<.05) significantly decreased, and ROM significantly increased in both groups (p<.05). There were also significant differences between the two groups for these three measures (p<.05). Conclusion: The muscle energy technique and cervical traction are more effective than cervical traction alone in reducing VAS and NDI and increasing ROM in patients with cervical radiculopathy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to investigate a influence in Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, and self-assisted ROM exercise of shoulder adhesive capsulitis. METHODS: The methods of the study was to investigate a change in range of motion (ROM), an increase in ROM, visual analogue scale (VAS) and disability questionnaire by Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, and self-assisted ROM exercise on 32 patients who were diagnosed with shoulder adhesive capsulitis. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups who were treated in the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and self-assistive ROM exercise group for flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation, VAS and disability questionnaire. Both group's flexion, extension, internal ratation, and external rotation levels were significantly different before and after the treatment. And significant statistical decrease in VAS and disability was seen. The extension of the shoulder joint was closely related to external rotation (r=0.84). There was a close relationship between internal rotation and external rotation at the shoulder joint. There was no increased range of extension through the exercise method. However, flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation, VAS, and disability questionnaire of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation groups were obviously higher than in the self-assisted ROM exercise group. CONCLUSION: Our study suggest that considering Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation for the patient who has shoulder adhesive capsulitis in clinic.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the result of conservative treatment in displaced radial head fracture. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 15 cases of displaced radial head fracture who were treated conservatively from April 1992 to May 2002. Follow-up period was more than 1 year. They were all males and the average age of patients was 20.2($11{\sim}24$) years. The average follow-up period was 13.4($12{\sim}15$) months. They were able to do active pronation and supination more than 70 degrees initially, who were applied long arm splint less than 1 week. The functional rating index modified after B.F. Morrey and no further displacement and union state of fragment in simple X-ray were used in follow-up assessment. Results: On the basis of the functional rating index modified after B.F. Morrey that included elements of pain, motion, strength, and stability, the results were 8 excellent, 7 good in patients who were treated conservatively, who had union and no further displacement of fragment in follow-up. Conclusion: We conclude that if they are able to do active pronation and supination more than 70 degrees initially, we take them to do early range of motion exercise after subsiding swelling, which can restrict limitation of range of motion exercise and return to the living early.
