A novel tri-mode ultraprecision positioning system for machine tools and measuring machine is proposed. The basic coarse mode uses a Twist-roller Friction Drive (abbr. TFD), and controls several tens of millimeters of the machine-table travel with nanometer order of positioning resolution. The fine mode also utilizes the TFD with a fine adjusting mechanism. The resolution of the fine mode is in the range of sub-nanometer. For realizing picometer positioning, the ultra-fine mode is executed by using an active aerostatic guideway. On the bearing surface of this active guideway, several Active Inherent Restrictors (abbr. AIRs) are embedded for controlling the table position. An AIR unit consists of a piezoelectric actuator having a through hole, one end of the hole on the bearing surface acts as an inherent restrictor. Owing to the aerostatic mechanism of the AIR, the deformation of the piezoelectric actuator in the AIR unit causes much reduced table displacement. Such motion reduction is effective for ultraprecision positioning. Current positioning resolution of the ultra-fine mode is 50pm, however the final goal of the positioning resolution is expected to be in the order of picometer.
AlN-BN ceramics with BN contents in the range of 10 to 40 wt% were prepared by hot pressing using no additive, or 3 wt%, Y2O3 or CaO, which are common densification aids for AlN. And their machinability, bend strength, and microstructures were investigated. Both the main and radial cutting forces decreased with increasing BN content in all three kinds of samples. For the BN contents of 30 wt% or above, the cutting forces were lower than that of a mild steel tested at a same condition. Especially in the case of main forces, the values were less than a quarter of that of a mild steel, indicating excellent machinability. Bend strength (when the tensile surfaces of specimens were perpendicular to the hot pressing direction) also decreased with BN content mainly due to the much lower Young's modulus of BN compared to AlN. With the composition of 30 wt% BN at which the AlN-BN ceramics started to show better machinability than a mild steel, the bend strength was 150 to 160 MPa, which is greater than that of machinable glass-ceramics of a mica system. With tensile surfaces parallel to the hot pressing direction, however, the bend strength obtained for the samples processed with the sintering acids showed low values (about 40 MPa), since most BN particles had such orientation that their cleavage planes (i.e., basal planes) were perpendicular to the pressing direction.

The Advantages of hot machining are the reduction of cutting forces, tool wear, and the increase of material removal rates. In this study, a hot-machining characteristics of milling by CBN tip was exprimentely analyzed, and the influence of the surface temperature and the depth of cut on the tool life were investigated. The selection of a heating method for obtaining ideal temperature of metals in machining is important. Faulty heating methods could induce unwanted structural changes in the workpiece and increase the cost. This study uses gas flame heating. It is obtained that tungsten carbide-alloyed has a recrystallisation temperature range of $800-1000^{\circ}C$ which is the high heating temperature that might induce unwanted structural changes. If it is performed at temperatures higher than $800^{\circ}C$ in machining, the possibility of unwanted structural changes and the increased wear of tool can be shown. Consequently, in hot machining of tungsten carbide-alloy, this study has chosen $400^{\circ}C-600^{\circ}C$ because the heating temperature might be appropriate in view of the cost and workpiece considerations. The results of this study experimentally shows a new machining method for tungsten carbide-alloyed that decreases the wear rate of machining tools

In highly automated machining centers, intelligent sensor fddeback systems are indispensable on order to monitor their operations, to ensure efficient metal removal, and to initate remedial action in the event of accident. In this study, an on-line tool wear detection system for thrning operations is developed, and experimentally evaluated. The system employs multiple sensors and the signals from these sensors are processed using a multichannel autoegressive (AR) series model. The resulting output from the signal processing block is then fed to a previously tranied artificial neural network (multiayered perceptron) to make a final decision on the state of the cutting tool. To learn the necessary input/output mapping for tool wear detection, the weithts and thresholds of the network are adjusted according to the back propagation (BP) method during off-line training. The results of experimental evaluation show that the system works well over a wide range of cutting conditions, and the ability of the system to detect tool wear is improved due to the generalization, fault-tolearant and self-ofganizing properties of the neural network.
The objective of this study is to evaluate various machining characteristics of AlN-hBN machinable ceramics in micro end-milling process for its further application. First, AlN based machinable ceramics with hBN contents in the range of 10 to 20vol% were prepared by hot-pressing. Material properties of the composites, such as relative density, Vickers hardness, flexural strength, Young's modulus and fracture toughness were measured and compared. Then, micro end-milling experiments were performed to fabricate micro channels using prepared system. During the process, cutting forces, vibrations and AE signals were measured and analyzed using applied sensor system. Machined micro channel shapes and surface roughness were measured using 3D non-contact type surface profiler. From the experimental results, it can be observed that the cutting forces, vibrations and AE signal amplitudes decreased with increasing hBN contents. Also, measured surface roughness and profiles were improved with increasing hBN contents. As a result of this study, optimum machining conditions can be determined to fabricate desired products with AlN-hBN machinable ceramics based on the experimental results of this research.

Since enactment of the Baekdu-Mountain Range protection law in Dec. 31st 2003, great interest arose in recovery of the natural environment in the Baekdu-Mountain Range. Since the Baekdu-Mountain Range has formed boundaries between different regions and it is the mountain that crosses our country from East to West, there are so many roads that penetrate this area. Slopes made by the construction of roads have poor foundation for the growth of vegetation and it takes a long period to restore only with natural restoration force. For this reason, various methods of revegetation to restore the damages are implemented but until now, revegetation of domestic soil cutting slopes are mainly covered by foreign import grasses to stabilize and cover grounds early. As we depended upon foreign import grasses for slopes revegetation, the landscape did not match in harmony with surrounding vegetation and therefore, we could see that these foreign grasses are withered in 2~3 years after the revegetation works and slopes become barren again. However, currently, there are no applicable standards for designs of green hill, desirable revegetation methods for the hill areas, roads and recovery models. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the status of revegetation plants and revegetation methods for the hill areas of the Baekdu-Mountain Range (azimuth, degree of tilt, and tilted places). Based on this, we attempted to find the desirable recovery models for the hill areas of the Baekdu-Mountain Range.

Optimizing the spacing of the disc cutter is a key element in the design of the TBM cutter head, which determines the drilling performance of the TBM. The full-scale linear cutting test is known as the most reliable and accurate test for calculating the spacing of the disc cutter, but it has the disadvantage of costly and time-consuming for the full-scale experiment. In this study, through the numerical analysis study based on the discrete element method, the tendency between Specific Energy-S/P ratio according to uniaxial compression strength and penetration depth of rock was analyzed, and the optimum spacing of 17-inch disc cutter was derived. To examine the appropriateness of the numerical analysis model, the rolling force acting on the disc cutter was compared and reviewed with the CSM model. As a result of numerical analysis for the linear cutting test, the rolling force acting on the disc cutter was analyzed to be similar to the rolling force derived from the theoretical formula of the CSM model. From the numerical analysis on 5 UCS cases (50 MPa, 70 MPa, 100 MPa, 150 MPa, 200 MPa), it is found that the range of the optimum spacing of the disc cutter decreases as the rock strength increases. And it can be concluded that 80~100 mm of disc cutter spacing is the optimum range having minimum specific energy regardless of rock strength. This tends to coincide with the optimal spacing of previously reported disk cutters, which underpins the disk cutter spacing calculated through this study.

To provide the basic informations related to forest road construction of mountainous terrain, we analyzed changes of the road structure factors such as banking and cutting slope gradients, slope length, road width by the environmental factors such as locations, slope gradients, soil types, road position on physically stabilized forest roads constructed in Gangwon-do. All factors related to the road structures by locations were significant except for banking slope length. Road width, longitudinal gradients, banking and cutting slope length by slope gradients were not significantly different and banking slope gradients in the range less than $30^{\circ}$, from $30^{\circ}$ to $35^{\circ}$ and more than $40^{\circ}$ and cutting slope gradients were significantly different for all areas. Road width, longitudinal gradients, banking slope length by soil types were not significantly different and others were significantly different. All factors related to the road structures by road position were significant except for cutting slope gradients.
Korea's agricultural land is constantly being reduced. The reasons for this are due to the change of agricultural profitability and the policy conditions. The reduction of agricultural land in 2010 showed a decline trend by 14.4 % of paddy fields and 1.2% of uplands compared to areas from 2000. These reductions were mainly due to switch rice paddy fields into upland or greenhouse facility cultivation because of low profitability of rice products compared to farm products. In addition, the permit system of agricultural areas was relaxed in switching paddy fields and this accelerated the reduction of agricultural land. For this reason, more than 1% of agricultural land area has been reduced every year for last five years. Moreover, indiscreet fill and cover materials such as construction wastes were used in agricultural lands and caused land contamination which threatened foundation as sustainable agricultural lands. For these reasons, it is a desperate situation to conserve good agricultural lands. However, the standards of transported soils, filling soils and cutting soils in the Agricultural Land Act are qualitative and have a problem of causing complaints. Therefore, the following criteria (proposals) are proposed in the Agricultural Land Act; (1) Use the proper soils for crops (criterion), (2) Soil components and amounts should be proper as transported soils (range), and (3) Prohibiting usage of improper earth rocks or recycled aggregates in case of filling soils (kinds). The presented criteria (proposals) suggest following; (1) Use physio-chemically proper soils for crops (criterion), (2) In case of transported soils, i, exclude potential acid sulphate soils, ii, gravel content sould be less than 15%, and iii, Heavy metals and other contaminants should be less than the soil contamination warning limit from the Ministry of Environments, (3) In case of filling soils, 13 kinds of recycled wastes specified in the Wastes Control Act should not be used as filling soils, (4) Practice soil conservation technology in case of sloping areas, and (5) Follow proper fertilizer application standards for maturing paddy fields and uplands when cutting soils.
