Reliability Analysis for Probability of Pipe Breakage in Water Distribution System (상수관망의 파이프 파괴확률 산정을 위한 신뢰성 해석)

  • Water pipes are supposed to deliver the predetermined demand safely to a certain point in water distribution system. However, pipe burst or crack can be happened due to so many reasons such as the water hammer, natural pipe ageing, external impact force, soil condition, and various environments of pipe installation. In the present study, the reliability model which can calculate the probability of pipe breakage was developed regarding unsteady effect such as water hammer. For the reliability model, reliability function was formulated by Barlow formula. AFDA method was applied to calculate the probability of pipe breakage. It was found that the statistical distribution for internal pressure among the random variables of reliability function has a good agreement with the Gumbel distribution after unsteady analysis was performed. Using the present model, the probability of pipe breakage was quantitatively calculated according to random variables such as the pipe diameter, thickness, allowable stress, and internal pressure. Furthermore, it was found that unsteady effect significantly increases the probability of pipe breakage. If this reliability model is used for the design of water distribution system, safe and economical design can be accomplished. And it also can be effectively used for the management and maintenance of water distribution system.

  • Astochastic finite element model which reflects both the effect of discontinuities and the uncertainty of material properties in underground rock mass has been developed. Latin Hypercube Sampling technique has been mobilized and compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method. To consider the effect of discontinuities, the joint finite element model, which is known to be suitable to explain faults, cleavage, things of that nature, has been used in this study. To reflect the uncertainty of material properties, multi-random variables are assumed as the joint normal stiffness and the joint shear stiffness, which could be simulated in terms of normal distribution. The developed computer program in this study has been verified by practical example and has been applied to analyze the circular cavern with discontinuous rock mass.

Case study of random vibration analysis of train-bridge systems subjected to wind loads

  • In order to reveal the independent relationship between track irregularity and wind loads, the stochastic characteristics of train-bridge coupling systems subjected to wind loads were investigated by the multi-sample calculation. The vehicle was selected as 23 degrees of freedom dynamical model, and the bridge was described by three-dimensional finite element model. It was assumed that the wind loads were random processes with strong spatial correlation, while the track irregularities were stationary random ones. As a case study, a high-speed train running on a cable-stayed bridge subjected to wind loads was studied. The effect of rail irregularities was deemed to be independent of the effect of wind excitations on the coupling system in the same wind circumstance for the same project, leading to the conclusion that the effect of wind loads and moving vehicle could be calculated separately. The variance results of the stochastic responses of vehicle-bridge coupling system under the action of wind loads and rail irregularities together were equivalent to the sum of the variance of the responses induced by each excitation. Therefore, when one of the input excitations is different, only the effect of changed loads needs to be assessed. Moreover, the new calculated results were combined with the effect of unchanged loads to present the stochastic response of coupling system subjected to the different excitations, reducing the cost of computations. The stochastic characteristics, the CFD (cumulative distribution function) of the coupling system with different wind velocities, vehicle speed, and vehicle marshalling were studied likewise.

Empirical Analysis on the Effects of FTAs and FTA Spillover on the Bilateral Trade using GMM, Fixed and Random Panel Model, and PPML Estimation (GMM, 패널, PPML 비교분석을 통한 FTA와 FTA파급효과 분석)

  • This paper analyzes both the FTA effects and FTA spillover effects on bilateral trade using 62 countries' panel data during the period of 2003 ~ 2013. To this end, we construct a FTA dummy variable for the effect of FTA in the model and the weighted FTA matrix interacted with export and import for the spillover effect of FTA. Gravity model is applied to the empirical analysis with GMM, fixed and random effects, and PPML estimation. As a result of the analysis, FTA variables have positive relationships with bilateral export and import. The weighted FTA matrix interacted with export and import also have positive signs on the bilateral export and import in all estimations. Thus, we conclude that various FTAs of neighbor or 3rd countries increase the bilateral export and import. We provide some implications that a country to increase the amount of trade has a trade relationship with the countries having various FTAs and for the FTA effect analysis, the three-country model is better than to the two-country model.

A study on prediction of whipping effect of very large container ship considering multiple sea states

  • In the design stage of the very large container ships, some methodologies for the whipping effects have been developed, but most of them are based on single sea state. We developed a methodology that considers multiple sea states. Fluid-structure Interaction (FSI) analyses with one dimensional structural model were carried out to capture slamming-induced transient whipping behaviors. Because of the nature of random phases of the applied wave spectra, the required period for entire FSI analyses was determined from the convergence study where the whipping effect became stable. Low pass filtering was applied to the transient whipping responses to obtain the hull girder bending moment processes. Peak counting method for the filtered whipping responses was used to obtain collection of the vertical bending moment peaks. The whipping effect from this new method is compared with that from based on single sea state approach. The efficiency and advantage of the new methodology are presented.

  • Comparison for various empirical models of normal incident absorption was made, along with experiments. Comparative result indicates that Voronina model which is function of fiber diameter and porosity is more suitable than the other models. An investigation for correlation between normal and random incident absorption was carried out by experiment and analysis. It appears that at the low frequencies, the random incident absorption is higher than the normal one, whileas at the high frequencies, the random incident absorption is decreased due to the effect of grazing incident components.

Bayesian estimation of median household income for small areas with some longitudinal pattern

  • One of the main objectives of the U.S. Census Bureau is the proper estimation of median household income for small areas. These estimates have an important role in the formulation of various governmental decisions and policies. Since direct survey estimates are available annually for each state or county, it is desirable to exploit the longitudinal trend in income observations in the estimation procedure. In this study, we consider Fay-Herriot type small area models which include time-specific random effect to accommodate any unspecified time varying income pattern. Analysis is carried out in a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology. We have evaluated our estimates by comparing those with the corresponding census estimates of 1999 using some commonly used comparison measures. It turns out that among three types of time-specific random effects the small area model with a time series random walk component provides estimates which are superior to both direct estimates and the Census Bureau estimates.

Influence of Internal Resonance on Responses of a Spring-Pendulum System under Broad Band Random Excitation (광대역 불규칙 가진력을 받는 탄성진자계의 내부공진효과)

  • An investigation into the modal interaction of an autoparameteric systemunder broad-band random excitation is made. The specific system examined is a spring-pendulum system with internal resonance, which is known to be a good model for a variety of engineering systems, including ship motions with nonlinear coupling between pitching and rolling motions. By means of the Gaussian closure method the dynamic moment equations explaining the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinanary differential equations of the first and second moments. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability we examine the system responses. The stabilizing effect of system damping is also examined.

  • Time domain method and frequency domain method are commonly used in the current fatigue life calculation theory. The time domain method has complicated procedures and needs a large amount of calculation, while the frequency domain method has poor applicability to different materials and different spectrum, and improper selection of spectrum model will lead to large errors. Considering that artificial neural network has strong ability of nonlinear mapping and generalization, this paper applied this technique to random fatigue life prediction, and the effect of average stress was taken into account, thereby achieving more accurate prediction result of random fatigue life.

A Meta-Analysis of Librarians' Job Satisfaction Studies (사서의 직무만족도에 관한 메타분석 연구)

  • This study conducted meta-analysis of librarians' job satisfaction using the Hedges & Olkin's Effect Size Model. Sex and Marrage as group variables, and Total Satisfaction and 7 sub-variables(Work Itself, Salary, Promotion, Supervision, Working Conditions, Social Recognition, Self-actualization) as dependent variables were selected from 27 studies. The effect sizes between men and women were significantly different on Supervision, Working conditions, Promotion, and Social Recognition, of which first two were homogeneous. But the difference of Social Recognition was not significant in Random Effect Model. The effect sizes difference between married and unmarried were significant on Self Recognition, Salary, and Work Itself. However the difference of Work Itself was not significant in Random Effect Model. Study Year could not be a moderator.
