A Study of the Change of Ship Speed according to the Ice Load Signal during Slow Ramming (저속 충격쇄빙 시 빙하중 신호에 따른 선속 변화 연구)

  • Recently, researchers in Korea and abroad actively have conducted research activities using the ARAON, a Korean icebreaking research vessel. The ARAON regularly conduct research activities in the Arctic and Antarctic waters every year. The icebreaking mode, which can be either continuous breaking or ramming, is determined by the conditions of the ice and the ice-covered waters. When the icebreaker encounters thick sea ice or an ice ridge, ramming is used. At that time, the speed of the ship generally is slower than that of continuous icebreaking. In this study, the ice load signal at the time of repetitive ramming during ARAON's 2012 Antarctic research voyage was analyzed. The time history of the ice load signal and the change in the speed of the ship used in ramming were compared with these values during continuous icebreaking.

  • To navigate in ice-covered waters, the ice-breaking process is required. The ice-breaking mode depends on material properties of sea ice and ice conditions. The ice-breaking mode is classified into ramming and continuous ice-breaking. The ramming is effective on large ice features, such as thick ice ridge and icebergs, and the continuous ice-breaking is on level ice. In general, the impact time duration of crushing or bending on ice sheets is from 0.2 to 1.0 second. However, impact duration in ramming will be increased. The Korean ice-breaking research vessel ARAON conducted her research voyage in the Antarctic sea during the winter of 2012. The IBRV ARAON measured strain in ramming and continuous ice-breaking. Strain gauge signals were recorded during the planned ice-breaking performance and the unplanned ice transits in heavy ice conditions. The aim of this study is to investigate the ice load signals measured in ramming processes under the heavy ice condition. Based on the time history of the signals, a raising time, a half-decaying time and time duration were investigated and compared with the previous study which was suggested the five profiles of the ice load signals.

Fabrication and Properties of the SiC Candle Filter by Vacuum Extrusion and Ramming Process (진공 압출성형 및 래밍성형 공정에 의한 탄화규소 캔들 필터 제조 및 특성)

  • Porous SiC candle filter preforms were fabricated by extrusion and ramming process. To fabricate SiC candle filter preform, commercially available 85 ${\mu}m\;{\alpha}-$-SiC powder and 44 ${\mu}m$ mullite, CaC$O_3$ powder were used as the starting materials. The candle type preforms were fabricated by vacuum extrusion and ramming process, and sintered at $1400{^{\circ}C}$ 2 h in air atmosphere. The effect of forming method on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength) and microstructure was investigated. Also, corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens as forming method was performed at $600{^{\circ}C}$ in IGCC syngas atmosphere. The sintered SiC filter which was formed by ramming process has more higher density and exhibit higher strength than extruded filter. Its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were 2.00 g/$cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively.

  • Porous SiC candle filter preforms were fabricated by extrusion and ramming process. To fabricate SiC candle filter preform, commercially available F180 mesh ($85\;{\mu}m$) $\alpha$-SiC powder and $44\;{\mu}m$ mullite, $CaCO_3$ powder were used as the starting materials. The candle type preforms were fabricated by vacuum extrusion and ramming process, and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ 2 h in air atmosphere. Corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens as forming method was performed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2,400 h in simulated IGCC syngas atmosphere. The effect of forming method on mechanical properties, pore distribution, microstructure and crystalline phase was investigated.

  • During Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor wire fabrication the effect of the initial packing density on the final characteristics of superconductor wire was systematically studied. To increase the powder packing density with uniform distribution of superconducting core a billet insertion method processed by CIP was applied instead of the commonly used vibration and ramming method of powder insertion into silver sheath. Compared with the vibration and ramming method the billent insertion technique processed by CIP cause the 30% incre-specimen with 130${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$(core thickness : 45 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$)and 5.24 mm width processed at 84$0^{\circ}C$for 200hrs. shows specimen with 130${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (core thickness ; 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$)and 5.24 mm width processed at 84$0^{\circ}C$ for 200 hrs. shows maximum 34A for Ic and 16, 700 A/cm2 for Ic measured at 77K and 0T. Also the sample rolled 3 times shows maximum 7, 2A for Ic and 11, 000 A/cm2 for 77K and 0T. Based on X-ray experimental results the formation of Bi-2223 and texture were significantly well developed at the interface between the superconducting core and silver sheath as compared with those of the interior area of superconducting core.

  • Recently, it has been frequently reported there were rapid increase of vehicle ramming attacks in the Western countries, such as Europe, United States of America, Australia, and Canada. Vehicle ramming attacks happened in Western countries specifically targeted civilians and maliciously intented to attack as many victims as possible. and resulted in significant number of casualties and wounds. Experts in terrorism analyze the increase of terrors using vehicle is largely due to the change of terror strategy of Islamic extremest groups like ISIS which encouraging would-be terrorist to use vehicles as an effective killing weapons. Accordingly, The most of countries experienced vehicle terrorist attacks began to build physical barriers including ballards, fences, and obstacles on the main shopping streets, transportation facilities, and famous crowded places and buildings in order to prevent mass killing by terrorists' vehicle ramming attack. Contrary to such swift respond to be prepared attacks using vehicle as a weapon Western countries, there are still lack of interests in preparing this type of terrorist attacks among domestic policy makers and scholars. To fulfill the research gap, this study aimed to investigate important issues regarding physical barriers in South Korea. The contributions, implications of this study and suggestions for policy implications of this study findings were discussed in results and discuss.

A Study on the Prediction of the Bow Form Design for Icebreakers (영해용선박의 선수형상 설계추정에 관한 연구)

  • The analysis and investigation are described for White's[2] equations compared to the equations of Runeburg[3] and Milano[5] for continuous icebreaking mode, Tunik[8-1] and Ghoneim[8-2] for ramming icebreaking mode. Calculation results compare reasonably well with published model-scale and full-scale icebreaker data by Baker[1] and Dick[11]. During continuous and ramming mode operation, using characteristics of an incebreaker, down ward force on ice and standard ice thickness broken are predicted. Additionally draft, trim and extraction difficulty are also predicted. The bow part line of an icebreakin $g^{ply}$ vessel is designed aiming to maximize the ice breaking capabiltiy as following conditions-low bow angle[20 degrees] at designed waterline, small spread angle complement [6 degrees] at designed waterline, small spread angle complement [6 degrees] and high propeller thrust [220tons]. with plow, two reamers and wave type bumper.

Effect of Forming Process and Particle Size on Properties of Porous Silicon Carbide Ceramic Candle Filters (성형공정(成形工程)과 원료입도(原料粒度)가 다공성(多孔性) 탄화규소(炭火硅素) 세라믹 캔들 필터 특성(特性)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • To fabricate porous SiC candle filter for filtration facility of the IGCC system, the candle type filter preforms were fabricated by ramming and vacuum extrusion process. A commercially available ${\alpha}$-SiC powders with various particle size were used as starting raw materials, and $44\;{\mu}m$ mullite, $CaCO_3$ powder were used as non-clay based inorganic sintering additive. The candle typed preforms by ramming process and vacuum extrusion were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h in air atmosphere. The effect of forming method and particle size of filter matrix on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength) and microstructure of the sintered porous SiC candle tilters were investigated. The sintered porous SiC filters which were fabricated by ramming process have more higher density and strength than extruded filter in same particle size of the matrix, and its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were $2.00\;g/cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively. Also, corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens by different forming method was performed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2400h using IGCC syngas atmosphere for estimation of long-term reliability of the candle filter matrix.

  • 세라믹 필터는 여러 종류의 분진제거 시스템에서 연소 배가스 정제를 위한 가장 적절한 소재로 알려져 있다. 현재까지 다양한 형태의 세라믹 필터가 개발되고 있는데, 캔들 타입(candle type), 튜브 타입(tubular type), 평판 타입(parallel flow type) 등이 그 예이다. 통상적으로 세라믹 캔들 필터는 가압유동층복합발전(PFBC, Pressurize Fluidized-Bed Combustion), 석탄가스화복합발전(IGCC, Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle), 석탄가스화연료전지복합발전(IGFC, Integrated coal Gasification Fuel cell Combined cycle)에서 고온 배가스 정제용으로 사용되고 있다. 일반적으로 IGCC나 CTL 합성가스 정제시스템의 경우에는 높은 고압(약 25기압)과 미세분진이 함유되어 있는 분위기에서 운전된다. 그러므로 이때 사용되는 초청정용 세라믹 집진필터는 고온, 고압 및 부식 환경에서 50 MPa 이상을 갖는 높은 강도와 내식성을 갖도록 개발되어야 하기 때문에 SiC(Silicon Carbide)가 가장 적절한 캔들 필터 소재로 적용되고 있다. 이에 따라 집진용 SiC 세라믹 캔들 필터를 개발하기 위해서는 고온에서 내산화성이 우수하고, 부피팽창에 의한 균열이 발생하지 않는 무기결합재의 선정 및 이를 통한 소재의 특성 최적화가 가장 중요한 부분이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 래밍성형 공정을 적용하여 1m급 탄화규소 세라믹 캔들 필터 시작품을 제조하였으며, 래밍성형 공정 이외에 정수압가압성형, 진공압출성형으로 제조되고 있는 세라믹 캔들 필터의 국내외 시장 및 그 전망을 분석하였다.
