  • In this study, a method for determining Ramberg-Osgood constants for leak-before-break evaluation was investigated. The Ramberg-Osgood constants were calculated for SA312, TP316, and SA-508 Gr.1a in an operating temperature of $316^{\circ}C$. Incremental plasticity, using stress-strain data obtained from experiment, and deformation plasticity, using the Ramberg-Osgood constants, were considered in a finite element analysis. Using incremental plasticity and deformation plasticity, J-integrals and crack opening displacement values were calculated and compared. By comparing the results of incremental plasticity and deformation plasticity, a suitable method for determining Ramberg-Osgood constants for leak-before-break evaluation was confirmed.

  • This paper provides two types of engineering J estimation equations for cylinders with finite internal axial surface cracks under internal pressure. The first type is the so-called GE/EPRI type J estimation equation based on Ramberg-Osgood materials. Based on detailed 3-D FE results the GE/EPRI-type J estimation equation along the crack front is proposed and validated for Ramberg-Osgood materials. For more general application, the developed GE/EPRI-type solutions are then re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. The proposed reference stress based J estimation equation has good agreement between the FE results and the proposed reference stress based J estimation provides confidence in the use of the proposed method for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics of pressurised piping

  • In this paper, seismic energy response of inelastic steel structures under earthquake excitations is investigated. For this purpose, a numerical procedure based on nonlinear dynamic analysis is developed by considering material, geometric and connection nonlinearities. Material nonlinearity is modeled by the inversion of Ramberg-Osgood equation. Nonlinearity caused by the interaction between the axial force and bending moment is also defined considering stability functions, while the geometric nonlinearity caused by axial forces is described using geometric stiffness matrix. Cyclic behaviour of steel connections is taken into account by employing independent hardening model. Dynamic equation of motion is solved by Newmark's constant acceleration method in the time history domain. Energy response analysis of space frames is performed by using this proposed numerical method. Finally, for the first time, the distribution of the different energy types versus time at the duration of the earthquake ground motion is obtained where in addition error analysis for the numerical solutions is carried out and plotted depending on the relative error calculated as a function of energy balance versus time.

  • Nonlinearity and anisotropy of soil should be considered for the exact prediction of deformation before the failure state. In this study, a new constitutive model is developed in which the nonlinearity of soil is formulated by Ramberg-Osgood equation and the soil anisotropy is implemented by the cross-anisotropic elasticity. Nonlinear anisotropic model and other models for comparison are used to analyze the simple boundary value problems and the circular footing problem. In the results, the anisotropic ratio of elastic modulus is a key value for the bulk modulus of soil, the coeffcient of earth pressure at rest, and the slope of effective stress paths. Furthermore, it is found that the nonlinearity of soil considering the in-situ stresses has the great influence on the magnitude of settlements.

  • Enhancement of the existing program for analyzing a pile driven by vibro hammer was tried. Damping effect of dynamic soil resistance and clutch friction were added to the existing governing equation which constitute vibrating system of vibro hammer-pile-soil. Parameters of the modified Ramberg-Osgood model which simulates dynamic load transfer curves for the developed program were recomputed. Comparing the results of the modified program with those of the field tests, pile displacement with time and load transfer behavior were more similar to those of the field test. The penetration rates obtained from the modified program were more close to those of the field test rather than those of the commertical program.

  • This paper provides an engineering J estimation equation for cylinders with finite internal axial surfacecracks under internal pressure. The proposed equation is the J estimation equation based on deformation plasticity using Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) materials. Based on detailed 3-D FE results using deformation plasticity, plastic influence functions for fully plastic J components are tabulated for practically interesting ranges of the mean radius-to-thickness ratio, the crack depth-to-length ratio, the crack depth-to-thickness ratio. the strain hardening index for the R-O material, and the location along the semi-elliptical crack front. Based on tabilated plastic influence functions, the J estimation equation along the crack front is proposed and validated for R-O materials. Good agreements between the FE results and the proposed J estimation provide confidence in the use of the proposed method to elastic-plastic fracture mechanics of pressurized piping.

  • Soils behave non-linearly at high strain. This study investigated the non-linear behavior of silty sands (Mixture of Ottawa Sand and Quartz Powder) by resonant column tests. The results were ·compared with Ramberg-Osgood's non-linear equation. From the tests, it was shown that the change of shear modulus and damping ratio was more sharp at low fine content, high void ratio and low confining pressure. It was also found that famberg-Osgood parameter, R was approximately 2.0, however the range of C varied from 200 to 3200.

  • The predictions of the material behavior for the structural stability of thrust chamber mixing head at very-low temperatures are very important since the head is highly pressurized by the liquid oxygen with very-low temperatures and experiences impact load by the thrust of combustion chamber. The constitutive equation to express tensile deformation behavior of the material at very-low temperature to predict deformation behavior of the mixing head is formulated by composition of thermal component and athermal component based on dislocation energy barrier model suggested by Kocks. Also, increase of thermal stress components by the increase of obstacles at low temperatures is formulated to the equation similar with Ramberg-Osgood equation. The suggested model predicted well the material's behavior at the wide temperature ranges from very-low temperature to ambient temperature.

  • Resonant column test huts been widely used as a primary laboratory testing technique in investigating dynamic soil properties expressed in therms of shear and Young's moduli and material damping. In thin Paper, dynamic Properties of typical Korean subgrade boils are investigated at shearing strains between 10-4% and 10-1% using Stokoe-type resonant column teat. The elastic threshold strains(yte) above which shear modulus and damping ratio are affected by strain amplitude, are defined at strain amplitude of about 10-3%. Below yte", small-strain shear modulus (Gmn) increases with confining pressure (Qc) as proportional to (Qe)0.61, and small-strain damping ratio(Dmin) ranges between 1% and 5.7%. Above yte, normalized shear modulus reduction curve(G/Gma. versus log strain) can be quite well expressed with Ramberg Osgood stress -strain equation and match well the curve suggested for sand by Seed and Idriss.riss.

  • This paper provides an reference stress based J estimation equation fur cylinders with finite internal axial surface cracks under internal pressure. In part 1, the J estimation equation based on deformation plasticity using Ramberg-Osgood (R-0) materials is proposed. In this paper, the developed CE/EPRI -type solutions ale then re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. Such a re-formulation provides a simpler equation for J. estimation are then further extended to combined internal pressure and bending. The proposed reference stress based J estimation equation is compared with elastic-plastic 3-D FE results using actual stress-strain data for a Type 304 stainless steel. Good agreement between the FE results and the proposed reference stress based J estimations provides confidence in the use of the proposed method to elastic -plastic fracture mechanics of pressurised piping.
