DLC films due to their extreme properties have attracted a lot of attention. In this study, the films were prepared on High Speed Steel (SKH2) by microwave plasma assisted CVD method using CH4. Every friction test under the normal load 2,5N and sliding velocity of 20,25mm/s in high vacuum (5${\times}$10$\^$-5/ Torr). The films were analyzed with Raman spectroscopy. The films failed immediately in vacuum due to high friction. Wear volume of DLC coated disks decreased more than that of non-DLC coated disks. Also, hardness of the films is about 600HV.
DLC is considered as the candidate material for application of moving parts in automotive components relatively in high pressure and temperature operating conditions for its high hardness with self lubrication and chemical inertness. Different deposition method such as arc plating, ion gun plating and PECVD were used for comparing mechanical and tribological properties of each DLCs deposited on stainless steel with 1 um thick respectively. Among these 3 types of DLCs, the arc plated DLC film showed highest value for wear resistance in dry condition. From the results of analysis for physical properties of DLC films, it seems that the adhesion force and crack initiation modes were more important factors than intrinsic mechanical properties such as hardness, elastic modulus and/or roughness to the wear resistance of DLC films. Raman spectroscopy was used for understanding chemical bonding natures of each type of DLC films. Typical D and G peaks were identified based on the deposition method. Hardness of the coating layers were identified by nanoindentation method and the adhesions were checked by scratch method.

The poor wear and scratch properties of polycarbonate have limited its application in many fields. In order to improve the wear and scratch properties of polycarbonate we have deposited diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings. The diamond like carbon coatings were made using a high frequency ion beam gun by introducing H2 and CH4 gases. The coatings were characterized with Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, ellipsometer, microscratch tester and hazemeter. Polymeric hard coating was applied onto the polycarbonate substrate before depositing a DLC coating to investigate the effect of interlayer on the system's failure mode.

Although DLC coatings have good tribological properties, these are dependant on the deposition method, the property of contact surface, and test condition. Humidity, which has little influence on tribological behavior in macro scale, is an important factor of tribological behavior in small devices like MEMS. The objective of this study is to investigate the tribological behavior of DLC coatings with particular attention to their wettability at various humidities. DLC coatings were deposited on Si substrates and tested using a reciprocating friction tester against Si$_3$N$_4$balls at various humidities. The results showed that the tribological behavior of DLC coatings was dependant on relative humidity and wettablility of DLC coatings. Friction coefficient at high relative humidity was higher thar that at low relative humidity. The tungsten-containing DLC coatings had a good wear resistance at low relative humidity whereas DLC coatings derived from argon(Ar)+cesium(Cs) gases showed a good wear resistance at high relative humidity.
Carbon layers were fabricated on silicon carbide by chlorination reaction at temperatures between $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1500^{\circ}C$ with $Cl_2/H_2$ gas mixtures. The effect of reaction temperature on the micro-structures and tribological behavior of SiC derived carbon layer was investigated. Tribological tests were carried out ball-on-disk type wear tester. Carbon layers were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectroscopy and surface profilometer. Both friction coefficients and wear rates were maintained low values at reaction temperature up to $1300^{\circ}C$ but increased suddenly above this temperature. Variation of surface roughness as a function of reaction temperature was dominant factor affecting tribological transition behavior of carbon layer derived from silicon carbide at high temperature.

To study the effects of mating materials on the tribological properties of DLC films. we used a ball-on-plate reciprocating friction tester in dry air and mating materials of martensite stainless steel (hardened, annealed SUS440C), austenite stainless steels (SUS304), and bearing steel (hardened, annealed SUJ2). At a light load of 0.6 N, the friction coefficient always exceeded ${\mu}>0.3$. Tribological properties of DLC film were still excellent above 0.6 N, except in sliding against annealed SUJ2. Analysis using micro-laser Raman spectroscopy showed that the difference between annealed SUJ2 and others materials appears mainly due to structural change in film.

This study was conducted to synthesize the diamond like carbon films by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The effects of gas composition on growth and mechanical properties of the films were investigated. A little amount of hydrogen or oxygen were added to base gas mixture of methane and argon. Methane dissociation and diamond like carbon nucleation were enhanced by installing negatively bias grid near substrate. The deposited films were indentified as hard diamond like carbon films by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The surface and fractured cross section of the films which were observed by scanning electron microscopy showed that film growth is very slow as about 0.3$\mu\textrm{m}$/hour, and relatively uniform with hydrogen addition. Vickers hardness of tungsten carbide (WC) cutting tool increased from about 1000 to 1600~1800 by deposition of DLC film, that of commercial TiN coated tool was about 1270. In cutting test of aluminum 6061 alloy, DLC coated cutting tool showed 1/3 or lower crater and flank wear than TiN coated or non-coated WC cutting tools.

Many researchers are interested in the synthesis and characterization of carbon nitride and diamond-like carbon (DLq because they show excellent mechanical properties such as low friction and high wear resistance and excellent electrical properties such as controllable electical resistivity and good field electron emission. We have deposited amorphous carbon nitride (a-C:N) thin films and DLC thin films by shielded arc ion plating (SAIP) and evaluated the structural and tribological properties. The application of appropriate negative bias on substrates is effective to increase the film hardness and wear resistance. This paper reports on the deposition and tribological OLC films in relation to the substrate bias voltage (Vs). films are compared with those of the OLC films. A high purity sintered graphite target was mounted on a cathode as a carbon source. Nitrogen or argon was introduced into a deposition chamber through each mass flow controller. After the initiation of an arc plasma at 60 A and 1 Pa, the target surface was heated and evaporated by the plasma. Carbon atoms and clusters evaporated from the target were ionized partially and reacted with activated nitrogen species, and a carbon nitride film was deposited onto a Si (100) substrate when we used nitrogen as a reactant gas. The surface of the growing film also reacted with activated nitrogen species. Carbon macropartic1es (0.1 -100 maicro-m) evaporated from the target at the same time were not ionized and did not react fully with nitrogen species. These macroparticles interfered with the formation of the carbon nitride film. Therefore we set a shielding plate made of stainless steel between the target and the substrate to trap the macropartic1es. This shielding method is very effective to prepare smooth a-CN films. We, therefore, call this method "shielded arc ion plating (SAIP)". For the deposition of DLC films we used argon instead of nitrogen. Films of about 150 nm in thickness were deposited onto Si substrates. Their structures, chemical compositions and chemical bonding states were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Hardness of the films was measured with a nanointender interfaced with an atomic force microscope (AFM). A Berkovich-type diamond tip whose radius was less than 100 nm was used for the measurement. A force-displacement curve of each film was measured at a peak load force of 250 maicro-N. Load, hold and unload times for each indentation were 2.5, 0 and 2.5 s, respectively. Hardness of each film was determined from five force-displacement curves. Wear resistance of the films was analyzed as follows. First, each film surface was scanned with the diamond tip at a constant load force of 20 maicro-N. The tip scanning was repeated 30 times in a 1 urn-square region with 512 lines at a scanning rate of 2 um/ s. After this tip-scanning, the film surface was observed in the AFM mode at a constant force of 5 maicro-N with the same Berkovich-type tip. The hardness of a-CN films was less dependent on Vs. The hardness of the film deposited at Vs=O V in a nitrogen plasma was about 10 GPa and almost similar to that of Si. It slightly increased to 12 - 15 GPa when a bias voltage of -100 - -500 V was applied to the substrate with showing its maximum at Vs=-300 V. The film deposited at Vs=O V was least wear resistant which was consistent with its lowest hardness. The biased films became more wear resistant. Particularly the film deposited at Vs=-300 V showed remarkable wear resistance. Its wear depth was too shallow to be measured with AFM. On the other hand, the DLC film, deposited at Vs=-l00 V in an argon plasma, whose hardness was 35 GPa was obviously worn under the same wear test conditions. The a-C:N films show higher wear resistance than DLC films and are useful for wear resistant coatings on various mechanical and electronic parts.nic parts.

Hydrogen free diamond like carbon (DLC) films were prepared on steel substrates by using a single ion beam in a configuration that allowed sputtering of a graphite target and at the same time allowed to impact the substrate at a grazing angle. The DLC films so prepared have improved properties with increased disorder and with modest hardness that is slightly higher than previously reported values. We have studied the effects of $N_2^+$ ions implantation on such films. It is found that the implantations of nitrogen ions into DLC films lead to chemical modifications that allowed N atoms to be incorporated into the carbon network to produce a nitrogenated DLC. Nano-indentation experiments indicated that the nitrogenated films have consistently higher hardnesses ranging from 30 to 45GPa, which represents a considerable increase in surface hardness, compared with non-nitrogenated precursor films. The investigations by XPS and Raman spectroscopy suggests that the $N_2^+$ implanted DLCs had undergone both chemical and structural modifications through the incorporation of N atoms and the increased ratio of $sp^3/sp^2$ type bonding. The observed high hardness was therefore attributable to these structural and chemical modifications. This result has implication for the preparation of super hard wear resistant films required for tribological functions in devices.
TiC-derived carbon coatings have been synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ temperature treatment with $H_2/Cl_2$ mixture gases. From Raman spectroscopy measurements, the modified layer was covered with carbon and the thick-ness of the layer was increased with increasing reaction time. And $I_D/I_G$ ratio was decreased with increasing reaction time. The superior tribological property was obtained from TiC reacted with $Cl_2$ gas for 2 hrs. And the tribological property measurements indicate that TiC-derived carbon layer has $0.9{\times}10_{-6}mm^3/Nm$ in wear coefficient and 0.13 in friction coefficient.
