  • In this study, we developed a modular rainwater infiltration system that can be applied for general purposes in urban areas to prepare for localized heavy rain caused by climatic change. This study also analyzed the system's effects on reducing runoff. An analysis of the system's effects on reducing runoff based on rainfall data and monitoring data obtained between September 2012 and December 2013 after the system was installed showed that approximately 20~22% of the runoff overflowed from the infiltration facility. Also, an analysis of the runoff that occurred during the monsoon season showed that 25% of the runoff overflowed through the storm sewer system of the urban area. These results show that the rainwater overflows after infiltrating the detention facility installed in the area during high-intensity rainfall of 100mm or higher or when precipitation is 100mm for 3~4 days without the prior rainfall. According to precipitation forecasts, torrential rainfall is becoming increasingly prevalent in Korea which is increasing the risk of floods. Therefore, the standards for storm sewer systems should be raised when planning and redeveloping urban areas, and not only should centralized facilities including sewer systems and rainwater pump facilities be increased, but a comprehensive plan should also be established for the water cycle of urban areas. This study indicates that decentralized rainwater management can be effective in an urban area and also indicates that the extended application of rainwater infiltration systems can offer eco-friendly urban development.

  • It is possible to understand rainfall infiltration characteristics by identification of wetting front in the soil. The wetting front by rainfall infiltration has close relationships among soil density, grain size distribution, and permeability coefficient in the soil. The infiltration velocity is a similar concept of permeability coefficient in the soil. In this study, infiltration velocity of rainfall was calculated by a field monitoring of volumetric water contents at the depths of 50 cm and 80 cm below the surface in the gneiss weathered soil. The calculated field infiltration velocity was compared with a permeability coefficient by a laboratory soil test using undisturbed soil samples in the study area. The permeability coefficient of the soil sample is $3.15{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$, while the field infiltration velocity is $1.87{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$. It is interpreted that the lower infiltration velocity is induced by complicate condition of porosity and grain size distribution of soil in the field. The rainfall intensity which influences on the volumetric water content and infiltration velocity is more than 20 mm/day resulting in expansion of wetting front in the soil.

  • Alluvial beds are intimately associated with electrical properties related to soil types, including clay mineral content, porosity, and water content. The hydraulic property governs water movement and storage in alluvial beds. This study revealed electrical resistivity and hydraulic properties in space and time in relation to the hydrogeological data, groundwater pumping, and rainfall infiltration into the alluvial bed located in Daesan-myeon, Changwon City. An electrical resistivity survey with electrode spacings of 2 and 4m using a dipole-dipole array indicates that electrical resistivity changes in the alluvial bed depend on groundwater pumping and rainfall events. Additionally, rainfall infiltration varies with hydraulic conductivity in the shallow zone of the alluvial bed. The 2 m electrode spacing survey confirms that electrical resistivity values decrease at shallow depths, corresponding with rainfall and increased water content in the soil, indicating rainfall infiltration approximately 1-2 m below the land surface. The 4m electrode spacing survey reveals that hydraulic conductivity (K) values and electrical resistivity (ρ) values display an inverse relationship from the surface to the water table (approximately 9 m) and at deeper levels than the water table. Notably, ρ values are impacted by pumping around the depth of the water table at 9 m. This study suggests that time-lapsed electrical resistivity surveys in space and time could be effective tools for detecting the impact of rainfall and pumping, as well as hydraulic conductivity in shallow alluvial beds.

  • It has been reported that many slope failures in unsaturated soils are mainly caused by downward infiltration due to rainfall. The rainfall characteristics could be an important factor, and more predictable slope failures can be achieved by considering more reasonable rainfall conditions. So, a need exists that these trends of infiltration in weathered soils, which is commonly found in Korea, are assessed by considering rainfall conditions based on phenomenological approach. In this paper, numerical analyses of unsaturated soil slope under rainfall conditions are presented based on the soil-water characteristic curve in the laboratory and huff method. Then the performance of unsaturated weathered soil slopes was evaluated under various conditions after applying the effect of overburden pressure on SWCCs and fines contents. The results demonstrated that the rainfall conditions using Huff method can be very effective and the proper application on analysis is very important to enhance the prediction on unsaturated slope stability.

  • The variation of hydraulic and hydrologic aspect of urban area according to the strongly seasonal variation of rainfall and the increment of urbanization has caused the runoff variation and increased the flood damage, and thus made a difficulty to manage water resources in urban area. Recently, as a part of efforts to resolve these problems, the facilities for reducing runoff increasing due to urbanization have a tendency to install in our country. In this study, more effective Infiltration-Storage System(ISS) is proposed and its reducing effect is analyzed by hydraulic experimental study. The infiltration characteristics of runoff reduction facilities are examined as varying artificial rainfall and a material of infiltration layers being able to consider the influence of urban development. As a result of comparison of infiltration rate of the upper and lower parts, the infiltration rate in the lower part is larger than that of the upper part. Thus, the ISS is more available than existing runoff reduction facilities. Results obtained in this study can be provided fundamental data for improvement of existing runoff reduction facilities and practical use of ISS.

  • This study derives an event-based tank model with a conceptual rainfall-infiltration process, modifying conventional tank models. The model comprises two serial tanks, one parallel tank and an infiltration regulating element. The infiltration process within the element is not represented as a function of only time, but as a function of soil moisture content for three possible cases owing to the relationship between rainfall intensity and infiltration capacity. This study considers the previous soil moisture condition of a watershed by using antecedent precipitation index. Six parameters of the model are identified by using the real coded genetic algorithm. The applicability and validity of the proposed model are assessed for the observed stormwater data from the research basin of the International Hydrological Program, the Pyeongchanggang River basin, Republic of Korea. The results computed streamflows show relatively good agreement with observed ones.

  • In this study unit hydrograph and infiltration capacity curves have been determined based on rainfall-runoff data for the upper Ansung stream basin. Infiltration capacity curve also has been computed based on measurements of accumulated infiltration. Accumulated infiltration curve which has close relationship with unit hydrograph has been found in adopting the following two approach methods. In the first method the mean infiltration capacity with infiltration index method and the Kostiakov accumulation infiltration curves have been computed based on hydrological data for the GongDo gauging station of the upper Ansung stream basin. In the second method the accumulation curve has been determined through directly observed infiltration data for four points in the upper basin and has been compared with the infiltration capacity curves by three observed rainfall-runoff event.

  • Infiltration and water flow in the upper soil layer of a deep water table aquifer are modeled for multistorm runoff events. The infiltration process is developed using the sharp wetting front model of Green and Ampt, and the following redistribution process is modeled using the gravity drained rectangular approximation. The Brooks-Corey model [Brooks and Corey, 1966] is adopted to relate the effective soil saturation, the tension head, and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity Firstly, the infiltration and redistribution model is developed for a single stom runoff event. Then a couple of events combined for multistorm runoff events. In the later case, infiltration rate of the second rainfall is strongly influenced by the length of the rainfall hiatus and soil moisture profile.

  • The main object of this study is to develop the infiltration facility that it can be used in grounds, parking areas, roads, pathway, housing etc. As a result, it is much alike in the infiltration method of facility to use permeable concrete, permeable hole and be filled with broken stones. And through this experiment, it was perceived the truth that the state of ground, the groundwater level, buildings around them, the history of submerging and the applicable infiltration facilities are the key. To verify how much the infiltration facility reduce the outflow, we set up the infiltration facility in the test area. In result, it reduced the outflow 89% in 24 mm rainfall, 93% in 12 mm, 51% in 140 mm, 75% in 64 mm and 80% in 54 mm. As the rainfall rate increased, the infiltration increased up to the limited rainfall. And in the limited rainfall, we knew that the infiltration was reduced suddenly. Infiltration is closely related to the state of ground, the rain interval etc. and we will analyze these conditions through the continuous monitoring.

  • A model for estimating daily effective rainfall of upland crops was developed. The infiltration process was described by Green-Ampt infiltration model developed by Chu(1978). The model considers delayed surface ponding and surface detention storage under a uniform soil profile. The Green-Ampt parameters, that is, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary pressure head on a sandy loam soil were determined from field experiment using Air-entry permeameter developed by Bouwer(1966). The model was verified by comparing measured and simulated surface runoff. The ratios of effective rainfall to total rainfall for red pepper, soybean, sesame and Chinese cabbage were evaluated using Borg's root growth model( 1986) respectively. The followings are a summary of this study results; 1.In a sandy loam soil average hydraulic conductivity was 3.28cm/hr and average capillary pressure head was 3.00cm. 2.The root growth of upland crops could be expressed by Borg's root growth model successively. 3.The measured and simulated surface runoff was agreed well with each other. 4.As the rainfall amount was increased, the ratio of effective rainfall to total rainfall was decreased exponentially till a certain growing period.
