  • The mount of antecedent 5-day rainfall (P5) is usually used to determine the antecedent soil moisture condition for estimating effective rainfall using the NRCS-CN method. In order to re-establish the threshold of P5 considering basin characteristics, this study investigated the sensitivity of the threshold of P5 to effective rainfall by comparing the corresponding observed direct runoff. The overall results indicate that the direct runoff estimated using the re-establihed threshold of P5 has smaller mean error (RMSE of 27.3 mm) than those using the conventional threshold (RMSE of 35.2 mm). In addition, after evaluating the effectiveness of threshold of P5 using the improvement index, the threshold re-established in this study improved the ability to estimate the direct runoff by 30% on average. This study also suggested to employ regression models using topographic indices to re-establish the threshold for ungauged basins. When using the re-established threshold from the regression model, the RMSE decreased ranging from 0.4 mm to 15.1 mm and the efficiency index of Nash and Sutcliffe increased up to 0.33.

  • Despite the potentially major influence of rainstorm patterns on the prediction of shallow landslides, this relationship has not yet received significant attention. In this study, five typical temporal rainstorm patterns with the same cumulative amount and intensity components comprising Advanced (A1 and A2), Centralized (C), and Delayed (D1 and D2) were designed based on a historical rainstorm event occurred in 2006 in Mt. Jinbu area. The patterns were incorporated as the hydrological conditions into the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability Model (TRIGRS), in order to assess their influences on pore pressure variation and changes in the stability of the covering soil layer in the study area. The results revealed that not only the cumulative rainfall thresholds necessary to initiate landslides, but also the rate at which the factor of safety (FS) decreases and the time required to reach the critical state, are governed by rainstorm pattern. The sooner the peak rainfall intensity occurs, the smaller the cumulative rainfall threshold, and the shorter the time until landslide occurrence. Left-skewed rainfall patterns were found to have a greater effect on landslide initiation. More specifically, among the five different patterns, the Advanced storm pattern (A1) produced the most critical state, as it resulted in the highest pore pressure across the entire area for the shortest duration; the severity of response was then followed by patterns A2, C, D1, and D2. Thus, it can be concluded that rainfall patterns have a significant effect on the cumulative rainfall threshold, the build-up of pore pressure, and the occurrence of shallow landslides, both in space and time.

  • This study investigated the differences between annual maximum series and annual maximum independent rainfall event series with relatively short and long rainfall durations. Annual maximum independent rainfall events were selected by applying various IETDs and thresholds to the hourly rainfall data in Seoul for the duration from 1961 to 2010. Annual maximum independent rainfall event series decided were then compared with the conventional annual maximum series. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, the effect of IETD and threshold was not beyond the expected level. For example, as the IETD increases, the frequencies of independent rainfall events decreased similarly in their rate for both with short and long durations. However, as the threshold increases, the frequency of those with rather long durations decreased much higher. Second, The mean rainfall intensity of the independent rainfall events was found to remain constant regardless of their duration. This indicates that the annual maximum rainfall intensity could be found in a rainfall event with longer durations. Lastly, the difference between the annual maximum rainfall series and the annual maximum independent rainfall event series with rather short rainfall durations was found significantly large, which decreases with longer durations. This result indicates that the conventional data analysis method, especially for small basins with short concentration time, could lead an unrealistic design rainfall with little possibility of occurrence.

  • This study is performed to consider the threshold values of heavy rain warning in Korea using 98 surface meteorological station data and 590 Automatic Weather System stations (AWSs), damage data of National Emergency Management Agency for the period of 2005 to 2009. It is in need to arrange new criteria for heavy rain considering concept of rainfall intensity and rainfall damage to reflect the changed characteristics of rainfall according to the climate change. Rainfall values from the most frequent rainfall damage are at 30 mm/1 hr, 60 mm/3 hr, 70 mm/6 hr, and 110 mm/12 hr, respectively. The cumulative probability of damage occurrences of one in two due to heavy rain shows up at 20 mm/1 hr, 50 mm/3 hr, 80 mm/6 hr, and 110 mm/12 hr, respectively. When the relationship between threshold values of heavy rain warning and the possibility of rainfall damage is investigated, rainfall values for high connectivity between heavy rain warning criteria and the possibility of rainfall damage appear at 30 mm/1 hr, 50 mm/3 hr, 80 mm/6 hr, and 100 m/12 hr, respectively. It is proper to adopt the daily maximum precipitation intensity of 6 and 12 hours, because 6 hours rainfall might be include the concept of rainfall intensity for very-short-term and short-term unexpectedly happened rainfall and 12 hours rainfall could maintain the connectivity of the previous heavy rain warning system and represent long-term continuously happened rainfall. The optimum combinations of criteria for heavy rain warning of 6 and 12 hours are 80 mm/6 hr or 100 mm/12 hr, and 70 mm/6 hr or 110 mm/12 hr.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the critical flood discharge and flash flood trigger rainfall for alarm system providing for a flash flood in mountainous area. The flash flood need non-linear approaching method, because rainfall-runoff is nonlinear and it is difficult to explain the existing linear rainfall-runoff. Hydrological characteristics would be utilized to apply such as hydrologic modelling or basin management. This study was effectively estimated a topographic characteristic factor of basin using the GIS. Especially, decided stream order using GIS at stream order decision that is important for input variable of GCIUH. A flash floods defined as a flood which follows shortly after a heavy or excessive rainfall event, with a few hours. In this study, we gave a definition that a critical flood for alarm is the flood when valley depth judging dangerous depth is over 0.5m depth from the bottom of channel. Result that calculate threshold discharge to use GCIUH, at the Mureung valley basin, flash flood trigger rainfall was 16.34mm in the first 20minutes when the threshold discharge was $14.54m^3/sec$.

  • In this study, we have developed an optimal time distribution model through extraction of peaks over threshold (POT) series. The median values for annual maximum rainfall dataset, which are obtained from the magnetic recording (MMR) and the automatic weather system(AWS) data at Seoul meteorological observatory, were used as the POT criteria. We also suggested the improved methodology for the time distribution of extreme rainfall compared to Huff method, which is widely used for time distributions of design rainfall. The Huff method did not consider changing in the shape of time distribution for each rainfall durations and rainfall criteria as total amount of rainfall for each rainfall events. This study have suggested an extracting methodology for rainfall events in each quartile based on interquartile range (IQR) matrix and selection for the mode quartile storm to determine the ranking cosidering weighting factors on minutely observation data. Finally, the optimal time distribution model in each rainfall duration was derived considering both data size and characteristics of distribution using kernel density function in extracted dimensionless unit rainfall hyetograph.

  • We examined relationship between rainfall and triggering of shallow landslides in South Korea, based on hourly rainfall data for 478 shallow landslides during 1963-2012. Rainfall intensity(I) and duration(D) relationship was analyzed to obtain the I-D threshold for the initiation of a shallow landslide using the quantile regression analysis. The I-D threshold equation from in this study is: $I=9.64D^{-0.27}$($4{\leq}D{\leq}76$), where I and D are expressed in millimeters per hour and hours, respectively. In addition, rainfall criteria were proposed to predict the potential to cause landslides, based on values of I-D and cumulative rainfall derived from quantile regression analysis. Our findings may provide essential data and important evidences for the improvement of landslide warning and evacuation system.

  • Recently, as local heavy rains occur frequently in a short period of time, economic and social impacts are increasing beyond the simple primary damage. In advanced meteorologically advanced countries, realistic and reliable impact forecasts are conducted by analyzing socio-economic impacts, not information transmission as simple weather forecasts. In this paper, the degree of flooding was derived using the Spatial Runoff Assessment Tool (S-RAT) and FLO-2D models to calculate the threshold rainfall that can affect human walking, and the threshold rainfall of the concept of Grid to Grid (G2G) was calculated. In addition, although it was used a lot in the medical field in the past, a quantitative accuracy analysis was performed through the ROC analysis technique, which is widely used in natural phenomena such as drought or flood and machine learning. As a result of the analysis, the results of the time period similar to that of the actual and simulated immersion were obtained, and as a result of the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve, the adequacy of the fair stage was secured with more than 0.7.

  • Flash floods are one of the types of natural hazards which has severe consequences. Flash floods cause high mortality, about 5,000 deaths a year worldwide. Flash floods usually occur in mountainous areas in conditions where the soil is highly saturated and also when heavy rainfall happens in a short period of time. The magnitude of a flash flood depends on several natural and human factors, including: rainfall duration and intensity, antecedent soil moisture conditions, land cover, soil type, watershed characteristics, land use. Among these rainfall intensity and antecedent soil moisture, play the most important roles, respectively. Flash Flood Guidance is the amount of rainfall of a given duration over a small stream basin needed to create minor flooding (bank-full) conditions at the outlet of the stream basin. In this study, the Sejong University Rainfall-Runoff model (SURR model) was used to calculate soil moisture along with FFG in order to identify flash flood events for the Geum basin. The division of Geum river basin led to 177 head-water catchments, with an average of 38 km2. the soil moisture of head-water catchments is considered the same as sub-basin. The study has measured the threshold of flash flood generation by GIUH method. Finally, the flash flood events were used for verification of FFG. The results of the validation of seven past independent events of flash flood events are very satisfying.
