At present, various methods are available to analyze storm runoff data. Among these, application of Z-transform is comparatively simple and new, and the technique can be used to identify rainfall and unit hydrograph from analysis of a single storm runoff. The technique has been developed under the premise that the rainfall-runoff process behaves as a linear system for which the Z-transform of the direct runoff equals the product of the Z-transforms of the transfer function and the rainfall. In the hydrologic literatures, application aspects of this method to the rainfall-runoff process are lacking and some of the results are questionable. Thus, the present study provides the estimation of Z-transform technique by analyzing the application process and the results using hourly runoff data observed at the research basin of International Hydrological Program (IHP), the Pyeongchanggang River basin. This study also provides the backgrounds for the problems that can be included in the application processes of the Z-transform technique.
This study proposes a method to generate runoff ensemble members using a rainfall-runoff model based on the shot noise process (hereafter the rainfall-runoff model). The proposed method was applied to generate runoff ensemble members for three drainage basins of Daerim 2, Guro 1 and the Jungdong, whose results were then compared with the observed. The parameters of the rainfall-runoff model were estimated using the empirical formulas like the Kerby, Kraven II and Russel, also the concept of modified rational formula. Gamma and exponential distributions were used to generate random numbers of the parameters of the rainfall-runoff model. Especially, the gamma distribution is found to be useful to generate various random numbers depending on the pre-assigned relationship between mean and standard deviation. Comparison between the generated runoff ensemble members and the observed shows that those runoff ensemble members generated using the gamma distribution with its standard deviation twice of the mean properly cover the observed runoff.
The subject basin of the research was the basin of Yeongcheon Dam located in the upper reaches of the Kumho River. The parameters of the model were derived from the results of abstracting topological properties out of rainfall-runoff observation data about heavy rains and Digital Elevation Modeling(DEM) materials. This research aimed at suggesting the applicability of the CELLMOD Model, a distribution-type model, in interpreting runoff based on the topological properties of a river basin, by carrying out runoff interpretation far heavy rains using the model. To examine the applicability of the model, the calculated peaking characteristics in the hydrograph was analyzed in comparison with observed values and interpretation results by the Clark Model. According to the result of analysis using the CELLMOD Model proposed in the present research for interpreting the rainfall-runoff process, the model reduced the physical uncertainty in the rainfall-runoff process, and consequently, generated improved results in forecasting river runoff. Therefore it was concluded that the algorithm is appropriate for interpreting rainfall-runoff in river basins. However, to enhance accuracy in interpreting rainfall-runoff it is necessary to supplement heavy rain patterns in subject basins and to subdivide a basin into minor basins for analysis. In addition, it is necessary to apply the model to basins that have sufficient observation data, and to identify the correlation between model parameters and the basin characteristics(channel characteristics).
This study proposed a rainfall-runoff model for the purpose of real-time flood warning in urban basins. The proposed model was based on the shot noise process, which is expressed as a sum of shot noises determined independently with the peak value, decay parameter and time delay of each sub-basin. The proposed model was different from other rainfall-runoff models from the point that the runoff from each sub-basin reaches the basin outlet independently. The model parameters can be easily determined by the empirical formulas for the concentration time and storage coefficient of a basin and those of the pipe flow. The proposed model was applied to the total of three rainfall events observed at the Jungdong, Guro 1 and Daerim 2 pumping stations to evaluate its applicability. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) The unit response function of the proposed model, different from other rainfall-runoff models, has the same shape regardless of the rainfall duration. (2) The proposed model shows a convergent shape as the calculation time interval becomes smaller. As the proposed model was proposed to be applied to urban basins, one-minute of calculation time interval would be most appropriate. (3) Application of the one-minute unit response function to the observed rainfall events showed that the simulated runoff hydrographs were very similar to those observed. This result indicates that the proposed model has a good application potential for the rainfall-runoff analysis in urban basins.
The changes of rainfall pattern and impervious covers have increased disaster risks in urbanized areas. Impervious covers such as roads and building roofs have been dramatically increased. So, it is falling the ability safety of flood defense equipments to exist. Runoff coefficient means ratio of runoff by whole rainfall which is able to directly contribute at surface runoff during rainfall event. The application of accurate runoff coefficients is very important in sewer pipelines design. This study has been performed to estimate runoff characteristics change which are applicable to the process of sewer pipelines design or various public facilities design. It has used the SHER model, a long-term runoff model, to analyze the impact of a rising impervious covers on runoff coefficient change. It thus analyzed the long-term runoff to analyze rainfall basins extraction. Consequently, it was found that impervious surfaces could be a important factor for urban flood control. We could suggest the application of accurate runoff coefficients in accordance to the land Impervious covers. The average increase rates of runoff coefficients increased 0.011 for 1% increase of impervious covers. By having the application of the results, we could improve plans for facilities design.
This study examined characteristic differences by the rainfall direction on the runoff responses. The directional characteristics of hydrological components in a basin were quantified by von Mises distribution. The runoff hydrograph was derived using the result of convolution integration of each distribution and this hydrograph was compared with GIUH model and observed data. As a result, it was found that runoff response by rainfall direction was more similar the observed rainfall-runoff data than the runoff result using GIUH model. These results implies that runoff modeling could be improved by considering directional components in hydrologic analysis. This study would be helpful to reduce uncertainties of hydrologic analysis considering a non-linearity of rainfall-runoff process by the rainfall direction.

The energy conservation theory is introduced for investigating processes of runoff and soil erosion on the hillslope system changed vegetation condition by wildfire The rainfall energy, input energy consisted of kinetic and potential energy, is influenced by vegetation coverage and height. Output energy at the outlet of hillslope is decided as the kinetic energy of runoff and erosion soil, and mechanical work according to moving water and soil is influenced dominantly by the work rather than the kinetic energy. Relationship between output and input energy is possible to calculate the energy loss in the runoff and erosion process. The absolute value of the energy loss is controlled by the input energy size of rainfall because energy losses of runoff increase as many rainfall pass through the hillslope system. The energy coefficient which is dimensionless is defined as the ratio of input energy of rainfall to output energy of runoff water and erosion soil such as runoff coefficient. The energy coefficient and runoff coefficient showed the highest correlation coefficient with the vegetation coverage. Maximum energy coefficient is about 0.5 in the hillslope system. The energy theory for output energy of runoff and soil erosion is presented by the energy coefficient theory associated with vegetation factor. Also runoff and erosion soil resulting output energy have the relation of power function and the rates of these increase with rainfall.

The temporal and spatial relationship of the weather elements such as rainfall and temperature is closely linked to the streamflow simulation, especially, to the flood forecasting problems. For the study area, Imjin river basin, which has the specific characteristics in geography with river cross operation between North and South Korea, the meteorological information in the northern area is totally deficiency, lead to the inaccuracy of streamflow estimation. In the paper, this problem is solved by using the combination of global (such as soil moisture content, land use) and local hydrologic components data such as weather data (precipitation, evapotranspiration, humidity, etc.) for the model-driven runoff (surface flow, lateral flow and groundwater flow) data in each subbasin. To compute the streamflow in Imjin river basin, this study is applied the hydrologic model SURR (Sejong Univ. Rainfall-Runoff) which is the continuous rainfall-runoff model used physical foundations, originally based on Storage Function Model (SFM) to simulate the intercourse of the soil properties, weather factors and flow value. The result indicates the spatial variation in the runoff response of the different subbasins influenced by the input data. The dependancy of runoff simulation accuracy depending on the qualities of input data and model parameters is suggested in this study. The southern region with the dense of gauges and the adequate data shows the good results of the simulated discharge. Eventually, the application of SURR model in Imjin riverbasin gives the accurate consequence in simulation, and become the subsequent runoff for prediction in the future process.
The purpose of this study has been studied and investigated to prediction algorithms of the Kalman Filtering theory which are based on the state-vector description, including system identification, model structure determination, parameter estimation. And the prediction algorithms applied of rainfall-runoff process, has been worked out. The analysis of runoff process and runoff prediction algorithms of the river-basin established, for the verification of prediction algorithms by the Kalman Filtering theory, the observed historical data of the hourly rainfall and streamflows were used for the algorithms. In consisted of the above, Kalman Filtering rainfall-runoff model applied and analysised to Wi-Stream basin in Nak-dong River(Basin area : $472.53km^2$).
For the efficient use and management of water resources, a reliable rainfall-runoff analysis is necessary. Still, continuous hydrological data and rainfall-runoff data are insufficient to secure through measurements and models. In particular, as part of the reasonable improvement of a rainfall-runoff model in the case of an ungauged watershed, regionalization is being used to transfer the parameters necessary for the model application to the ungauged watershed. In this study, the GR4J model was selected, and the SCEM-UA method was used to optimize parameters. The rainfall-runoff model for the analysis of the correlation between watershed characteristics and parameters obtained through the model was regionalized by the Copula function, and rainfall-runoff analysis with the regionalized parameters was performed on the ungauged watershed. In the process, the intermediate state variables of the rainfall-runoff model were extracted, and the correlation analysis between water level and the ground water level was investigated. Furthermore, in the process of rainfall-runoff analysis, the Standardized State variable Drought Index (SSDI) was calculated by calculating and indexing the state variables of the GR4J model. and the calculated SSDI was compared with the standardized Precipitation index (SPI), and the hydrological suitability evaluation of the drought index was performed to confirm the possibility of drought monitoring and application in the ungauged watershed.
