This study evaluated the statistical stationarity of rainfall quantiles as well as the rainfall itself. The conventional methodologies like the Cox-Stuart test for trend and Dickey-Fuller test for a unit root used for testing the stationarity of a time series were applied and evaluated their application to the rainfall quantiles. As results, first, no obvious increasing or decreasing trend was found for the rainfall in Seoul, which was also found to be a stationary time series based on the Dickey-Fuller test. However, the Cox-Stuart test for the rainfall quantiles show some trends but not in consistent ways of increasing or decreasing. Also, the Dickey-Fuller test for a unit root shows that the rainfall quantiles are non-stationary. This result is mainly due to the difference between the rainfall data and rainfall quantiles. That is, the rainfall is a random variable without any trend or non-stationarity. On the other hand, the rainfall quantiles are estimated by considering all the data to result in high correlation between their consecutive estimates. That is, as the rainfall quantiles are estimated by adding a stationary rainfall data continuously, it becomes possible for their consecutive estimates to become highly correlated. Thus, it is natural for the rainfall quantiles to be decided non-stationary if considering the methodology used in this study.

This study proposed new simple methodologies for testing the stationarity of rainfall quantiles, and applied to the rainfall data at Seoul. The methodologies in this study are based on the analysis of frequency change of rainfall quantiles, different from previous studies like Ahn et al. (2001) who analyzed the change of rainfall quantiles themselves. The different types of methodologies are proposed in this study; one is to evaluate the occurrence frequency of rainfall with its return period more than the data length, and the other is to evaluate the effect of new observation on the highest rainfall data recorded. The application of these methodologies shows that the rainfall quantiles at Seoul have no significant proof leading their non-stationarity.
It is very important to establish sufficiently long and reliable annual maximum rainfall data in estimating areal rainfall quantiles of Han River Basin. The data from 9 gauging stations measured by Korea Meteorological Administration may meet such a requirement, however the number of these data sets is too small to estimate overall areal rainfall quantiles in large basin such as Han River Basin. In order to solve such a problem, the space correlations of many sites' data measured by Korea Ministry of Construction and Transportation and Korea Water Resources Corporation (the number of sites is 59) were used for modification of rainfall measure density. And areal rainfall quantiles according to each sub-basin were estimated based on regression analysis.

The FORGEX (Focused Rainfall Growth Extension) method was developed to estimate rainfall quantiles in the United Kingdom. This method does not need any regional grouping and can estimate rainfall quantiles with relatively long return period. The spatial dependence formula (ln $N_e$) was derived to consider the distance from growth curve of proper population to the distributed network maximum (netmax) data using the UK rainfall data. For this reason, there is an inaccurate problem in rainfall quantiles when this formula is applied in Korea. In this study, the new formula was derived in order to improve such shortcomings using rainfall data of 64 sites from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). A 42-year period (1973~2014) was taken as the reference period from rainfall data, then the formula was derived using three parameters such as rainfall duration, number of site, area of network. Then the new formula was applied to the FORGEX method for regional rainfall frequency analysis. In addition, rainfall quantiles were compared with those from the UK formula. As a result, the new formula shows more accurate results than the UK formula, in which the FORGEX method by the UK formula underestimates rainfall quantiles. Finally, the new improved formula may estimate accurate rainfall quantiles for long return period.
Recently, due to various climate variabilities, extreme rainfall events have been occurring all over the world. Extreme rainfall events in Korea mainly result from the summer typhoon storms and the localized convective storms. In order to estimate appropriate quantiles for extreme rainfall, this study considered the probability behavior of daily rainfall from the typhoons and the convective storms which compose the annual maximum rainfalls (AMRs). The conventional rainfall frequency analysis estimates rainfall quantiles based on the assumption that the AMRs are extracted from an identified single population, whereas this study employed a mixed distribution function to incorporate the different statistical characteristics of two types of rainfalls into the hydrologic frequency analysis. Selecting 15 rainfall gauge stations where contain comparatively large number of measurements of daily rainfall, for various return periods, quantiles of daily rainfalls were estimated and analyzed in this study. The results indicate that the mixed Gumbel distribution locally results in significant gains and losses in quantiles. This would provide useful information in designing flood protection systems.

The objective of this paper is to study the discharge characteristics of pollutant loads in small watershed according to probability rainfall using the Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (WinHSPF). The subwatershed of Gosam reservoir watershed in Gyeonggido province was simulated and the probability rainfall of study area was estimated by recurrence interval and duration. The probability rainfalls are 156.5, 205.9 and 277.4 mm for 6 hrs, 12 hrs and 24 hrs in 10 year frequency, and each probability rainfalls is distributed by Huff's 4th quantiles method and applied to HSPF. The pollutant loads were high for initial rainfall. The concentrations of TN, TP and BOD were high as rainfall duration is shorter and rainfall intensity is higher.

Extreme hydrological events can cause serious threats to the society. Hence, the selection of probability distributions for extreme rainfall is a fundamental issue. For this reason, this study was focused on understanding possible distributional changes in annual daily maximum rainfalls (AMRs) over time in Sri Lanka using quantile regression. A simplified nine-category distributional-change scheme based on comparing empirical probability density function of two years (i.e. the first year and the last year), was used to determine the distributional changes in AMRs. Daily rainfall series of 13 station over Sri Lanka were analyzed for the period of 1960-2015. 4 distributional change categories were identified for the AMRs. 5 stations showed an upward trend in all the quantiles (i.e. 9 quantiles: from 0.05 to 0.95 with an increment of 0.01 for the AMR) which could give high probability of extreme rainfall. On the other hand, 8 stations showed a downward trend in all the quantiles which could lead to high probability of the low rainfall. Further, we identified a considerable spatial diversity in distributional changes of AMRs over Sri Lanka.
In this study, rainfall quantile was estimated using scale invariance property of rainfall data with different durations and the applicability of such property was evaluated for the rainfall data of South Korea. For this purpose, maximum annual rainfall at 22 recording sites of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) having relatively long records were used to compare rainfall quantiles between at-site frequency analysis and scale invariance property. As the results, the absolute relative errors of rainfall quantiles between two methods show at most 10 % for hourly rainfall data. The estimated quantiles by scale invariance property can be generally applied in the 8 of 14 return periods used in this study. As an example of down-scaling method, rainfall quantiles of $10{\sim}50$ minutes duration were estimated by scale invariance property based on index duration of 1 hour. These results show less than 10 % of absolute relative errors except 10 minutes duration. It is found that scale invariance property can be applied to estimate rainfall quantile for unmeasured rainfall durations.

Rainfall quantiles were estimated by applying the FORGEX method. The circle network and two elliptical ones with the ratios of 1 to 1.5 and 1 to 2.0 were used and compared to find appropriate one for rainfall data. Annual maximum data were collected from 376 sites and standardized by the median. The networks were organized from the subject sites and then pooled and netmax data were collected from each network. Then, the growth curves and quantiles were estimated. When the subject site had small differences of quantiles from index flood method and at-site frequency analysis, those of the estimated quantiles from circle and elliptical networks were small. In contrast, the sites where the quantile differences are big have big differences of quantiles from circle and elliptical networks. The estimated quantiles from the elliptical network are more accurate than those from the circle network, because the ellipse network contains more sites in South Korea. Moreover, the ellipse with ratio of 1 to 2.0 shows closer quantiles to those from index flood method than one with ratio of 1 to 1.5. It is, therefore, found that the FORGEX method with 1 to 2.0 ellipse network is appropriate regional frequency analysis in South Korea.

At-site analysis is not appropriate if the record length is shorter than target return period T. If the record length is longer than 27 years, then at-site analysis may be sufficient(Institute of Hydrology, 1999). However, in such a case, regional frequency analysis is recommended for purpose of comparison. Record lengths of annual maximum rainfall data in Korea are usually shorter than 50 years. It is therefore essential to apply regional frequency analysis for estimating rainfall quantiles of more than 100 years return period. In this research, regional rainfall frequency analysis is performed for hourly rainfall data of South Korea. Homogeneous regions are idntified by clusgter analysis which is a standard method of statistical multivariate analysis for dividing a data set into groups. An appropriate distribution is chosen by goodness-of-fit test. GLO is found to be an appropriate distribution as a result of goodness-of-fit measure (Hosking & Wallis, 1997). Simulation experiments are performed to check the performance of frequency analysis techniques. The effects of discordant sites on quantiles are considered.
