This study is to analyze the relationship between rainfall and water level using the measured data. During the rainfall event from September 9 to September 12, 2010, the rainfall and water level data were measured from automatic weather systems and automatic water level measurement systems which have been installed throughout Gangwon province. The result showed that the relationship between rainfall and peak flow change was different by basin and tributary. It is expected that this study will help to build a plan for preventing disasters and rainfall-runoff models for the river basins in Gangwon province.
In this study, we propose a new method that utilizes rainfall data in and out of a basin, which is greater than 25.4mm for point rainfall or 12.7mm for areal mean rainfall respectively. From our analysis, most frequent quartile for point and areal mean rainfall were found to be the same in general for various rainfall duration intervals. From an evaluation of design rainfall per each rainfall duration distributed in time by the MOCT(Ministry of Construction and Transportation) version of Huff's method and this study, peak rainfall intensity by this study was found to be greater than the one by MOCT, but there were no consistent increase or decrease of this difference with rainfall durations. Using the distributed design rainfall per each duration by MOCT and this study, corresponding flood inflow hydrographs were simulated and compared each other. Contrary to the case of peak rainfall intensity, difference in peak flow by both methods per each rainfall duration started to increase from about 12-hr duration. Especially, the difference in peak flow was significant when critical rainfall duration was considered, and this trend was similar for peak flows of other rainfall durations. Therefore, the method proposed in this study is thought to be the effective procedure for the construction of dimensionless cumulative rainfall curve that is representative of a basin while considering time distribution characteristics for different rainfall durations.
Rainfall-runoff model of Jeju Oedo Stream was used to compute the optimal unit hydrograph by HEC-HMS model that reflecting on watershed characteristics. Each rainfall event was comparatively analyzed with the actual flow measurement using Clark, Snyder and SCS synthetic methods for derived unit hydrograph. Subsequently, the null hypothesis was established as p-value for peak flow and peak time of each unit hydrograph by one-way ANOVA(Analysis of variance) was larger than significance level of 0.05. There was no significant difference in peak flow and peak time between different methods of unit hydrograph. As a result of comparing error rate with actual flow measurement data, Clark synthetic unit graph best reflected in Oedo Stream as compared to other methods, and error rate of Clark unit hydrograph was 0.02~1.93% and error rate at peak time was 0~2.74%.
This study is a sensitivity analysis of the parameters which affect the simulation results under various design rainfall conditions, using the SWMM model, for three selected basins in urban areas. The sensitivity of the peak flow rate is defined by $S_Q$ (=1.0 - (min. ratio of peak flow rate/max. ratio of peak flow rate)), and the rainfall conditions are classified in terms of design rainfall frequency, duration, and distribution. The simulation results show that in most conditions the parameters - the impermeable area ratio, the sewer slope, and the initial infiltration capacity - have more significant effects on the results than other parameters. As the design rainfall frequency increases, the sensitivity of the sewer slope and sewer roughness increases, while the parameters related with the surface runoff decrease. When the rainfall duration increases, the sensitivities of most parameters of surface runoff and sewer flow decrease. Also, at the 1st quarterly Huff rainfall distribution condition, the impermeable area ratio has high sensitivity, but at the 4th quarterly condition the parameters related with sewer flow show higher sensitivities. These tendencies can be explained by considering the procedure for computing the effective rainfall and kinematic wave on the surface and sewer flow.
This study was conducted to investigate the hydrological characteristics of groundwater level change and rainfall-runoff processes at the Moojechi Bog located in Mt. Jeungjok, Ulsan. The average runoff rate of bog was 0.58 which is similar to that of general mountainous watershed. In the short term hydrograph, runoff was increased slowly and It took a long time to arrive peak flow. After that time, the decreasing pattern of runoff was slower than that of general mountainous watershed. In case of the long term water budget, the Moojechi Bog had a abundant base flow and runoff was continued in spite of non rainfall period. The groundwater level was arrived peak flow immediately after rain stop but was decreased very slowly until the next rain. The change pattern of long term groundwater level was very similar to that of the amount of rain and discharge. The higher rainfall intensity was, the lower slope of recession curve on the groundwater level was and the longer rainfall duration was, the longer peak flow was. Judging from these results, Moojechi bog could be evaluated to have a constant groundwater level.

Weather radar has been widely used in measuring precipitation and discharge and predicting flood risks. The radar rainfall estimate has one of the essential problems in terms of uncertainty and accuracy. Previous study analyzed radar errors to reduce its uncertainty or to improve its accuracy. Furthermore, a recent analyzed the effect of radar error on rainfall-runoff using spatial error model (SEM). SEM appropriately reproduced radar error including spatial correlation. Since the SEM does not take the time dependence into account, its time variability was not properly investigated. Therefore, in the current study, we extend the SEM including time dependence as well as spatial dependence, named after Spatial-Temporal Error Model (STEM). Radar rainfall events generated with STEM were tested so that the peak runoff from the response of a basin could be investigated according to dependent error. The Nam River basin, South Korea, was employed to illustrate the effects of STEM on runoff peak flow.
To design the minor structures in the small watersheds, it is required to calculate the peak discharge. For these calculations the simple peak flow prediction equations, the unit hydrograph method, the synthetic unit hydrograph methods or the runoff simulation models are adopted. To use these methods it is generally required to know the amount and the distributions, which are the uniform distribution, the triangular distribution, the trapezoidal distribution, or the Huff type distribution, of the design rainfall. In this study, the peak discharges are calculated by the different rainfall distribution and the values are compared.
This study was conducted to identify the runoff characteristics of non-point source according to rainfall in Dalseo and Daemyung watershed. Land-uses of the Dalseo and Daemyung watershed were surveyed to urban $72.1\%$ and mountainous $6.7\%$, and urban $49.3\%$ and mountainous $20.5\%$, respectively Mean runoff coefficients in each area were estimated to Dalseo watershed 0.49 and Daemyung watershed 0.16. In the relationship between the rainfall and peak-flow correlation coefficients(r) were determined to Dalseo watershed 0.9060 and Daemyung watershed 0.5620. In the relationship between the antecedent dry period and flrst flow runoff correlation coefficients(r) were determined to Dalseo watershed 0.7217 and Daemyung watershed 0.2464. In the relationship between the rainfall and watershed loading, exponent values of SS in Dalseo and Daemyung watershed were estimated to 0.54 and 0.496, respectively.
This study revealed the differences in runoff processes of granite drainage basins in Korea and Mongolia by hydrological measurements in the field. The experimental drainage basins are chosen in Korea (K-basin) and Mongolia (M-basin). Occurrence of intermittent flow in K-basin possibly implies that very quick discharge dominates. The very high runoff coefficient implies that most of effective rainfall quickly discharge by throughflow or pipeflow. The Hortonian overlandflow is thought to almost not occur because of high infiltration capacity originated by coarse grain sized soils of K- basin. Very little baseflow and high runoff coefficient also suggest that rainfall almost does not infiltrate into bedrocks in K-basin. Flood runoff coefficient in M-basin shows less than 1 %. This means that most of rainfall infiltrates or evaporates in M-basin. Runoff characteristics of constant and gradually increasing discharge imply that most of rainfall infiltrates into joint planes of bedrock and flow out from spring very slowly. The hydrograph peaks are sharp and their recession limbs steep. Very short time flood with less than 1-hour lag time in M-basin means that overland flow occurs only associating with rainfall intensity of more than 10 mm/hr. When peak lag time shows less than 1 hour for the size of drainage area of 1 to 10 km2, Hortonian overland flow causes peak discharge (Jones, 1997). The results of electric conductivity suggest that residence time in soils or weathered mantles of M-basin is longer than that of K-basin. Qucik discharge caused by throughflow and pipeflow occurs dominantly in K-basin, whereas baseflow more dominantly occur than quick discharge in M-basin. Quick discharge caused by Hortonian overlandflow only associating with rainfall intensity of more than 10 mm/hr in M-basin.
Synthetic unit hydrograph equations for rainfall run-off characteristics analysis and estimation of design flood have long and quite frequently been presented, the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph. The major inputs to the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph are lag time and peak coefficient. In this study, the methods for estimating lag time and peak coefficient for small watersheds proposed by Zhao and McEnroe(1999) were applied to the Kum river basin in Korea. We investigated lag times of relatively small watersheds in the Kum river basin in Korea. For this investigation the recent rainfall and stream flow data for 10 relatively small watersheds with drainage areas ranging from 134 to 902 square kilometers were gathered and used. 250 flood flow events were identified along the way, and the lag time for the flood events was determined by using the rainfall and stream flow data. Lag time is closely related with the basin characteristics of a given drainage area such as channel length, channel slope, and drainage area. A regression analysis was conducted to relate lag time to the watershed characteristics. The resulting regression model is as shown below: ※ see full text (equations) In the model, Tlag is the lag time in hours, Lc is the length of the main river in kilometers and Se is the equivalent channel slope of the main channel. The coefficient of determinations (r$^2$)expressed in the regression equation is 0.846. The peak coefficient is not correlated significantly with any of the watershed characteristics. We recommend a peak coefficient of 0.60 as input to the Snyder unit-hydrograph model for the ungauged Kum river watersheds
