Soils in the sloping uplands in Korea are subject to intensive land use with high input of agrochemicals and are vulnerable to soil erosion. Development of the environmentally sound land management strategy is essential for a sustainable production system in the sloping upland. This report addresses the status of upland agriculture and the best management practices for the uplands toward the sustainable agriculture. More than 60% of Korean lands are forest and only 21% are cultivating paddy and upland. Uplands are about 7% of the total lands and about 62% of the uplands are in the slopes higher than 7%. Due to the site-specificity of the upland, many managerial and environmental problems are occurring, such as severe erosion, shallow surface soils with rocky fragments, and loadings of non-point source (NPS) contaminants into the watershed. Based on the field trials, most of the sloping uplands were classified as Suitability Class III-V and the major limiting factor was slope and rock fragments. Due to this, soils were over-applied with N fertilizer, even though N rate was the recommendation. This resulted in decreases in yield, degradation of soil quality and increases in N loading to the leachate. Various case studies drew management practices toward sustainable production systems. The suggested BMP on the managerial, vegetative, and structural options were to practice buffer strips along the edges of fields and streams, winter cover crop, contour and mulching farming, detention weir, diversion drains, grassed waterway, and slope arrangement. With these options, conservation effects such as reductions in raindrop impact, flow velocity, runoff and sediment loss, and rill and gully erosion were observed. The proper management practice is a key element of the conservation of the soil and water in the sloping upland.
This study analyze the synoptic meteorological cause of rainfall, rainfall intensity, drop size distribution(DSD), fall velocity and oblateness measured by the 2D-Video distrometer(2DVD) by comparing two cases which are heavy rainfall event case and a case that is not classified as heavy rainfall but having more than $30mm\;h^{-1}$ rainrate in July, 2014 at Gimhae region. As a results; Over the high pressure edge area where strong upward motion exists, the convective rain type occurred and near the changma front, convective and frontal rainfall combined rain type occurred. Therefore, rainrate varies based on the synoptic meteorological condition. The most rain drop distribution appeared in the raindrops with diameters between 0.4 mm and 0.6 mm and large particles appeared for the convective rain type since strong upward motion provide favorable conditions for the drops to grow by colliding and merging so the drop size distribution varies based on the location or rainfall types. The rainfall phases is mainly rain and as the diameter of the raindrop increase the fall velocity increase and oblateness decrease. The equation proposed based on the 2DVD tends to underestimated both fall velocity and oblateness compared with observation. Since these varies based on the rainfall characteristics of the observation location, standard equation for fall velocity and oblateness fit for Gimhae area can be developed by continuous observation and data collection hereafter.

To examine surface erosion and sediment export patterns on a hillslope, which was devastated by a shallow landslide and which was slowly revegetating by natural plant species, we surveyed variations in surface erosion depth on the upper-, middle- and lower-section of the hillslope, and subsequent sediment yield from the whole hillslope. The result showed that, with the passing of year, surface erosion on the devastated hillslope was regulated by higher rainfall intensity due to the supply-limitation of exportable sediment, and its variation range decreased. In addition, surface erosion on the upper-section with steep slope was regulated by higher rainfall intensity, which might result in raindrop erosion, compared to it on the lower-section with relatively gentle slope. Besides, the sediment yield from the devastated hillslope had nonlinear relationship with surface erosion depth on the hillslope because sediments on the hillslope are exported downwards while repeating their cycle of transport and redistribution. Our findings suggest the establishment of management strategy to prevent sediment-related disasters occurred during torrential rainfall events, which was based on the continuous field investigation on the hillslope devastated by landslides.
Bacterial black spot disease of prune fruit (Prunus salicina cv. formosa) has outbroke around major prune production area, Gimcheon, Euiseong and Gunwi in Gyungbuk province and has caused severe economic loss. Integrons PCR primer was designed along with sample pre-incubation and nested PCR method to enhance detection sensitivity for early detection of bacteria in fields. Designed integrons PCR primer successfully detected Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni from field collected samples, fruit, leaf, branch and even in raindrop collected from prune orchard. Pre-incubation along with nested PCR enhanced sensitivity to detect X. arboricola pv. pruni from seemingly healthy looking, symptomless branches. Designed integrons PCR can be used in prune nursery fields and in plant quarantine practice for the detection of X. arboricola pv. pruni.
Geology and stromatolite fossil localities of Socheong Island are reviewed on the basis of previous studies and recent field survey. A new fossil locality of stromatolites which are very well preserved is recognized in Bunam area, northeast of Socheong Island. An outcrop composed of sandstone and shale alternations which exhibit well-developed laminations and folds is also found in the east of the Socheong harbor, and it is regarded as one of the symbolic features of the geology in Socheong Island. Stromatolite fossil localities of Socheong Island contains diverse and well-preserved Late Proterozoic stromatolites which are correlated with those from the Mukchon and Myoraksan series of the Sangwon System and diverse sedimentary structures such as ripple marks, desiccation cracks, and raindrop imprints. Stromatolites of Socheong Island, the oldest fossil Natural Monument of Korea, should be preserved at the national level, and continued intensive research must be conducted.

As opposed to using fossil fuels, we need to use eco-friendly resources such as sunlight, raindrops and wind to produce electricity and combat environmental pollution. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a device that converts mechanical energy into electricity by inducing repetitive contact and separation of two dissimilar materials. During the contact and separation processes, electron flow occurs owing to a change in electric potential of the contacting surface caused by contact electrification and electrostatic induction mechanisms. A solid-solid contact TENG is widely known, but it is possible to generate electricity via liquid-solid contact. Therefore, by designing a hydrophobic TENG, we can gather electricity from raindrop energy in a feasible manner. To fabricate the superhydrophobic surface of TENGs, we employ a dip coating technique to synthesize an octadecylamine (ODA)- and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based coating on polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The synthesized coating exhibits superhydrophobicity with a contact angle greater than 150° and generates a current of 2.2 ㎂/L while water droplets fall onto it continuously. Hence, we prepare a box-type TENG, with the ODA/PDMS coating deposited on the inside, and place a 1.5 mL water droplet into it. Resultantly, we confirm that the induced vibration causes continuous impacts between the ODA/PDMS coating and the water, generating approximately 100 pA for each impact.

This study analyzes Two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) data while summer 2011-2012 in Daegu region and compares with Marshall and Palmer (MP) distribution to find out statistical characteristics and characteristics variability about drop size distribution (DSD) of Daegu region. As the characterize DSD of Daegu region, this study uses single moment parameters such as rainfall intensity (R), reflectivity factor (Z) and double moment parameters such as generalized characteristics number concentration ($N{_0}^{\prime}$) and generalized characteristics diameter ($D{_m}^{\prime}$). Also, this study makes an assumption that DSD function can be expressed as general gamma distribution. The results of analysis show that DSD of Daegu region has ${\log}_{10}N{_0}^{\prime}=2.37$, $D{_m}^{\prime}=1.04mm$, and c =2.37, ${\mu}=0.39$ on average. When the assumption of MP distribution is used, these figures then end up with the different characteristics; ${\log}_{10}N{_0}^{\prime}=2.27$, $D{_m}^{\prime}=0.9mm$, c =1, ${\mu}=1$ on average. The differences indicate liquid water content (LWC) of Daegu distribution is generally larger than MP distribution at equal Z. Second, DSD shape of Daegu distribution is concave upward. Other important facts are the characteristics of Daegu distribution change when Z changes. DSD shape of Daegu region changes concave downward (c =2.05~2.55, ${\mu}=0.33{\sim}0.77$) to cubic function-like shape (c =3.0, ${\mu}=-0.13{\sim}-0.33$) at Z > 45 dBZ. 35 dBZ ${\leq}$ Z > 45 dBZ group of Daegu distribution has characteristics similar to maritime cluster of diverse climate DSD study. However, Z > 45 dBZ group of Daegu distribution has a difference from the cluster.
In recent years, the frequency of heavy rainfall associated with high rainfall intensity has been continuously increasing due to the effects of climate change; and thus also causes an increase in watershed soil erosion. The existing estimation techniques, used for the prediction of soil erosion in Korea have limitations in predicting the: average soil erosion in watersheds, and the soil erosion associated with abnormal short-term rainfall events. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of torrential rainfall, and utilize physics-based model to accurately determine the soil erosion characteristics of a watershed. In this study, the rainfall kinetic energy equation, in the form of power function, is proposed by applying the probability density function, to analyze the rainfall particle distribution. The distributed rainfall-erosion model, which utilizes the proposed rainfall kinetic energy equation, was utilized in this study to determine the soil erosion associated with various typhoon events that occurred at Cheoncheon watershed. As a result, the model efficiency parameters of the model for NSE and RMSE are 0.036 and 4.995 ppm, respectively. Therefore, the suggested soil erosion model, coupled with the proposed rainfall-energy estimation, shows accurate results in predicting soil erosion in a watershed due to short-term rainfall events.

The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) was initiated in August 1985 to develop new generation water erosion prediction technology for federal agencies involved in soil and water conservation and environmental planning and assessment. Developed by USDA-ARS as a replacement for empirical erosion prediction technologies, the WEPP model simulates many of the physical processes important in soil erosion, including infiltration, runoff, raindrop detachment, flow detachment, sediment transport, deposition, plant growth and residue decomposition. The WEPP included an extensive field experimental program conducted on cropland, rangeland, and disturbed forest sites to obtain data required to parameterize and test the model. A large team effort at numerous research locations, ARS laboratories, and cooperating land-grant universities was needed to develop this state-of-the-art simulation model. The WEPP model is used for hillslope applications or on small watersheds. Because it is physically based, the model has been successfully used in the evaluation of important natural resources issues throughout the United State and in several other countries. Recent model enhancements include a graphical Windows interface and integration of WEPP with GIS software. A combined wind and water erosion prediction system with easily accessible databases and a common interface is planned for the future.
