TRMM TMI data were used to investigate a relationship between physical parameters from microwave sensor and typhoon intensities from June to September, 2004. Several data such as 85GHz brightness temperature (TB), polarization corrected temperature (PCT), precipitable water, ice content, rain rate, and latent heat release retrieved from the TMI observation were correlated to the maximum wind speeds in the best-track database by RSMC-Tokyo. Correlation coefficient between TB and typhoon intensity was -0.2 - -0.4 with a maximum value in the 2.5 degree radius circle from the center of tropical cyclone. The value of correlation between in precipitable water, rain, latent heat, and typhoon intensity is in the range of 0.2-0.4. Correlation analysis with respect to storm intensity showed that maximum correlation is observed at 1.0-1.5 degree radius circle from the center of tropical cyclone in the initial stage of tropical cyclone, while maximum correlation is shown in 0.5 degree radius in typhoon stage. Correlation coefficient was used to produce regressed intensities and adopted for typhoon Rusa (2002) and Maemi (2003). Multiple regression with 85GHz TB and precipitable water was found to provide an improved typhoon intensity when taking into account the storm size. The results indicate that it may be possible to use TB and precipitable water from satellite observation as a predictor to estimate the intensity of a tropical cyclone.
In this study, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of satellite imagery for the two heavy rainfall cases (21 September, 2010, 9 August, 2011) occurred in the Korean Peninsula. In general, the possibility of strong convection can be increased when the region with plenty of moisture at the lower layer overlapped with the boundary between dark and bright area in the water vapor imagery. And the merging of convective cells caused by the difference in the moving velocities of two cells resulted in the intensification of convective activity and rainfall intensity. The rainfall intensity is more closely linked with the minimum cloud top temperature than the mean cloud top temperature. Also the spatio-temporal variations of rainfall intensity are impacted by the existence of merging processes. The merging can be predicted by the animation of satellite imagery but earlier detection of convective cells is almost impossible by using the infrared and water vapor imagery.
With the increasing severity of climate change, intense torrential rains are occurring more frequently globally. Flooding due to torrential rain not only causes substantial damage directly, but also via secondary events such as landslides. Therefore, accurate and prompt flood detection is required. Because it is difficult to directly access flooded areas, previous studies have largely used satellite images. Traditionally, water indices such asthe normalized difference water index (NDWI) and modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) which are based on different optical bands acquired by satellites, are used to detect floods. In addition, as flooding likelihood is greatly influenced by the weather, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images have also been used, because these are less influenced by weather conditions. In this study, we compared flood areas calculated from SAR images and water indices derived from Landsat-8 images, where the images were acquired at similar times. The flooded area was calculated from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-1 images taken between the end of May and August 2019 at Lijiazhou Island, China, which is located in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River basin and experiences annual floods. As a result, the flooded area calculated using the MNDWI was approximately 21% larger on average than that calculated using the NDWI. In a comparison of flood areas calculated using water indices and SAR intensity images, the flood areas calculated using SAR images tended to be smaller, regardless of the order in which the images were acquired. Because the images were acquired by the two satellites on different dates, we could not directly compare the accuracy of the water-index and SAR data. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates that floods can be detected using both optical and SAR satellite data.
In this study, we performed verification of VSRF (Very Short Range Forecast of precipitation) model and application of NWSPC (National Weather Service PC) rainfall-runoff model in Kyoungan-chun basin. We used two methods for verification of VSRF model. The first method is a meteorological verification that evaluates the special quality feature for rain amount between AWS and VSRF model over Kyoungan-chun basin, while second method is a hydrological verification that compares the calculated Mean Area Precipitation (MAP) between AWS and VSRF Quantitatively. This study examines the usefulness of VSRF precipitation forecasting model data in NWSPC hydrological model. As a result, correlation coefficient is over 0.6 within 3 hour lead time. It represents that the forecast results from VSRF are useful for water resources application.
The flood is the most general and frequently occurs among natural disasters. Generally flood by the rainfall which extends superexcellently for the occurrence but flash flood from severe rain storm gets up an absurd drowsiness at grade hour. This paper aims to 1 hour real-time flash flood and predict possibility at the area where is the possible flood will occur from the rainfall hour mountain after acquiring data in GIS(Geographic Information System) base by GcIUH(Geomorphoclimatic Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph). The flash flood occurrence is set up at 0.5m, 0.7m and 1.0m in standard depth. And this study suggests standard flood alarm which designed by probable flood according to duration time. The research result shows real-time flash flood evaluation has the suitable standard in the basin when comparing with the existing official warning announcement system considering topographical information.
The total precipitable water fields derived from HIRS(High Resolution Infrared Radiometer Sounder)and MSU(Microwave Sounding Unit) measurements of TOVS and brightness temperature of SSM/I were used to investigate the evolution of moisture fields for the Typhoon WALT(9407) which after landing in Japan it became tropical depression in Korea-Japan Strait, and FAYE(9503) which was the first tropical storm of 1995 to became a typhoon, respectively. The total precipitable water derived from TOVS observations is delineated according to the evolutions of WALT and FAYE movements because total precipitable water fields of TY WALT(9407) and FAYE9\(9503) were largely controlled by horizontal transport of water vapor over the Northwest Pacific Ocean which dominantly plays an important role in maintaining and accelerating their intensities toward Korea and Japan . These fields demonstrated that two major bands, which imply the rain bands, were locally well-organized and similar to the thick convective cloud features over Japan and the Korean peninsula while WALT and FAYE were approaching away and to. But the values of derived TOVS total precipitable water have shown the underestimate of those of SSM/I total comparatively for two typhoons.
Microwave brightness temperature data measured from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) aboard Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite are used to investigate the characteristics of hydrological features of the East Asian summer monsoon during 1994 and 1995. The analyzed parameters include total columnar water vapor, cloud liquid water, and rain rate. These are estimated from SSM/I brightness temperature data for the two summer seasons (June, July, August) of 1994 and 1995 over the Asian monsoon region (0$^{\circ}$-60$^{\circ}$N, 45$^{\circ}$-180$^{\circ}$E). Results indicate that there are periodic westward movement of dry air over the 20$^{\circ}$-30$^{\circ}$N latitudinal belt with about 20-30 day period. Considering that the location of the North Pacific high is closely linked to the evolution of the monsoon activities over East Asia, the westward expansion of the North Pacific high may be the one important element modulating the monsoon intensity.

The nitrogen oxides, NO and $NO_2$, abbreviated usually as NOx, emitted from combustion facilities such as power plants and automobiles are the typical air-pollutants causing acid rain and photochemical smog. In order to solve the NOx-related pollution problems effectively, we need efficient techniques to monitor NOx in the combustion exhausts and in environments. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting NOx is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid state amperometric sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing amperometric gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test. Amperometric Nitrogen dioxide sensor was fabricated using NASICON and an $NaNO_2$ layer deposited on the counter electrode. The current response was almost linear with Nitrogen dioxide concentration in the range 1-350 ppb at $150^{\circ}C$.
This paper describes the ground system for COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite), the first Korean multi-purposed geostationary satellite, at MSC (Meteorological Satellite Center) in Korea. The overview of COMS MI (Meteorological Imager) will be introduced as well. KMA would implement mission planning for COMS MI operation and receive, process, interpret, disseminate, and archive MI data operationally for domestic and foreign user groups. Major missions of COMS MI are mitigation of natural hazard such as typhoon, dust storm, and heavy rain, and short-term warning of severe weather to protect human health and commerce. Moreover, research of climate variability and long-term changes will be supported. In accordance with those missions, the concept and design of COMPASS (COMS operation and meteorological products application service system), the ground system for COMS MI in MSC, have been setting up since 2004. Currently, COMPASS design is being progressed and will have finished the end of 2006. The development of COMPASS has three phases: first phase is development of fundamental COMPASS components in 2007, second phase is to integrate and test all of the COMPASS components in 2008, and the last phase is to operate COMPASS after COMS In-Orbit Tests in 2009.

In recent years, environments of our globe has been getting worse as a result of rapid growth of socioeconomic activities. The global environmental issues of acid rain, green house effect and ozone depletion are caused by various chemical pollutants, emitted from industries, automobiles and home. Most of these pollutants are produced by combustion processes. CO2 as a chief criminal of the greenhouse effect is a main combustion product of fossil fuels. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting CO2 is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid electrolyte gas sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing potential type gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test.
