Pecipitable Water Vapor Change Obtained From GPS Data

  • GPS observation has been performed at Khon Kaen in northeast Thailand to investigate the Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) change since August 2001 by using a Trimble 4000SSi receiver. The data obtained in the period from March to June in 2002 were processed by using CAMIT software to obtain the Zenith Tropospheric Delay (ZTD) at every one hour referring to some IGS stations around Thailand. We estimated the Zenith Hydrostatic Delay (ZHD) at every three hours with barometer data at Khon Kaen of Thai Meteorological Department, The Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) was obtained by subtracting ZHD from ZTD and PWV can be calculated from ZTD. The results obtained shows that PWV changes with a large amplitude in March and April before the monsoon onset, and also we can see steep PWV increases before rain and decreases after rain. In May and June after the onset, the PWV is almost constant to be 60 to 70 mm, but there is a semi-diurnal change which has high PWV values at about 8 and 20 o'clock in local time.

항공 LiDAR 자료를 이용한 브루나이 열대우림의 임분단위 지상부 생체량 추정 (Estimation of Stand-level Above Ground Biomass in Intact Tropical Rain Forests of Brunei using Airborne LiDAR data)

  • 본 연구는 항공 LiDAR 자료를 이용하여 열대원시림인 브루나이 지역의 지상부 생체량을 정량화하기 위하여 수행되었다. 25ha 크기의 연구대상지에 0.09ha ($30m{\times}30m$) 크기의 24개의 표본구 내에서 조사된 각 표본점 내 개체목의 흉고직경 및 위치자료를 활용하였다. 또한, 항공 LiDAR 자료를 이용하여 수치표면모델(Digital Surface Model), 수치지형모델(Digital Terrain Model), 수고모델(Canopy Height Model)을 구축하였다. 수고모델을 표본구단위로 분할하고 총 12개의 LiDAR 높이변수를 구축하였다. 표본구별로 상대생장식을 이용하여 계산된 생체량과 LiDAR 자료로부터 추출된 변수간의 다중회귀분석을 통해 LiDAR 자료로부터 생체량을 추정할 수 있는 식을 도출하였다. 표본구의 생체량은 평균 366.48 Mg/ha였으며, 155.81 Mg/ha부터 597.21 Mg/ha까지 분포하였다. LiDAR로부터 생체량을 추정하는 식의 검증 결과, 결정계수 값은 0.84로 나타났다.

Assessing the Impacts of Errors in Coarse Scale Data on the Performance of Spatial Downscaling: An Experiment with Synthetic Satellite Precipitation Products

  • The performance of spatial downscaling models depends on the quality of input coarse scale products. Thus, the impact of intrinsic errors contained in coarse scale satellite products on predictive performance should be properly assessed in parallel with the development of advanced downscaling models. Such an assessment is the main objective of this paper. Based on a synthetic satellite precipitation product at a coarse scale generated from rain gauge data, two synthetic precipitation products with different amounts of error were generated and used as inputs for spatial downscaling. Geographically weighted regression, which typically has very high explanatory power, was selected as the trend component estimation model, and area-to-point kriging was applied for residual correction in the spatial downscaling experiment. When errors in the coarse scale product were greater, the trend component estimates were much more susceptible to errors. But residual correction could reduce the impact of the erroneous trend component estimates, which improved the predictive performance. However, residual correction could not improve predictive performance significantly when substantial errors were contained in the input coarse scale data. Therefore, the development of advanced spatial downscaling models should be focused on correction of intrinsic errors in the coarse scale satellite product if a priori error information could be available, rather than on the application of advanced regression models with high explanatory power.

MONITORING OF BAR TRANSFORMATION IN THE HAN RIVER ESTUARY USING RADARSAT/SAR IMAGES

  • In river with bar, the characteristics of its physical conditions have a close relationship with bar morphology. In this paper, a monitoring approach of bar transformation in the Han River Estuary is presented using RADARSAT/SAR Images. The estuary is divided into North and South Korea and its area is blocked by CCL(Civil Control Line). Satellite remote sensing, therefore, is uniquely suited to monitoring bar transformation. Based on SAR signatures for bars, bar transformation is investigated from 2000 to 2005, and monitoring of suspended-silt transportations from terrestrial runoff is tried to understand the morphology during the events of severe rain storm. SAR data did not reveal clearly the bar locations because of most of data acquisitions during high tides from 6.8 m to 9.0 m. Even though the problem, it could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars and shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contribute highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon.

  • In these days, diesel vehicle or power plant emits $NO_X\; and SO_2$ which cause air pollution like acid-rain, ozone layer destroy and optical smoke, therefore there are many kinds of methods considered for removing them such as SCR, catalyst, plasma process, and plasma-catalyst hybrid process. T$TiO_2$ is commonly used as catalyst to remove $NO_X$ gas because it have very excellent chemical characteristic as photo catalyst. In this paper, $NO_X$ sensing characteristic of $TiO_2$ thin film deposited by R.F Magnetron sputtering is investigated. A finger shaped electrode on $Al_2$O$_3$ substrate is designed and $TiO_2$ is deposited on the electrode by the magnetron sputtering deposition system. Chemical composition of the deposited $TiO_2$ thin film is $TiO_{1.9}$ by RBS analysis. When the UV is irradiated on it with flowing air, capacitance of $TiO_2$ thin film increases, however, when NO gas is put into the system with air, it immediately decreases because of photo chemical reaction. and it monotonously decreases with increasing NO concentration.

Reconstruction and Validation of Gridded Product of Wind/Wind-stress derived by Satellite Scatterometer Data over the World Ocean and its Impact for Air-Sea Interaction Study

  • We have persistently constructed gridded products of surface wind/wind stress over the world ocean using satellite scatterometer (ERS and Qscat). They are available for users as the Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observation (J-OFURO) data together with heat flux components. Recently, a new version data of the Qscat/SeaWinds based on improved algorithm for rain flag and high wind-speed range have been delivered, and allowed us to reconstruct gridded product with higher spatial resolution. These products are validated by comparisons with in-situ measurement data by mooring buoys such as TAO/TRITON, NDBC and the Kuroshio Extension Observation (KEO) buoys, together with numerical weather prediction model products such as the NCEP-1 and 2. Results reveal that the new product has almost the same magnitude in mean difference as the previous version of Qscat product and much smaller than the NCEP-1 and 2. On the other hand, it is slightly larger root-mean-square (RMS) difference than the previous one and NCEPs for the comparison using the KEO buoy data. This may be due to the deficit of high wind speed data in the buoy measurement. The high resolution product, together with sea surface temperature (SST) one, is used to examine a new type of relationship between the lower atmosphere and upper ocean in the Kuroshio Extension region.

시정과 습도 관측자료를 이용한 자동 현천 관측 정확도 향상 연구 (Improvement of Automatic Present Weather Observation with In Situ Visibility and Humidity Measurements)

  • Present weather plays an important role not only for atmospheric sciences but also for public welfare and road safety. While the widely used state-of-the-art visibility and present weather sensor yields present weather, a single type of measurement is far from perfect to replace long history of human-eye based observation. Truly automatic present weather observation enables us to increase spatial resolution by an order of magnitude with existing facilities in Korea. 8 years of human-eyed present weather records in 19 sites over Korea are compared with visibility sensors and auxiliary measurements, such as humidity of AWS. As clear condition agrees with high probability, next best categories follow fog, rain, snow, mist, haze and drizzle in comparison with human-eyed observation. Fog, mist and haze are often confused due to nature of machine sensing visibility. Such ambiguous weather conditions are improved with empirically induced criteria in combination with visibility and humidity. Differences between instrument manufacturers are also found indicating nonstandard present weather decision. Analysis shows manufacturer dependent present weather differences are induced by manufacturer's own algorithms, not by visibility measurement. Accuracies of present weather for haze, mist, and fog are all improved by 61.5%, 44.9%, and 26.9% respectively. The result shows that automatic present weather sensing is feasible for operational purpose with minimal human interactions if appropriate algorithm is applied. Further study is ongoing for impact of different sensing types between manufacturers for both visibility and present weather data.

토픽모델링을 이용한 대한원격탐사학회지의 연구주제 분류 및 연구동향 분석: 자연·환경재해 분야를 중심으로 (A Study on the Research Topics and Trends in Korean Journal of Remote Sensing: Focusing on Natural & Environmental Disasters)

  • 대한원격탐사학회지는 국내 원격탐사 분야를 대표하는 학술지로 원격탐사를 바탕으로 다학제 간 융합연구를 통해 수행된 다양한 분야의 연구논문들이 게재되고 있다. 본 연구는 대한원격탐사학회지에 게재된 논문을 바탕으로 토픽모델링을 수행하여 원격탐사 분야의 역사와 발전에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 1985년부터 2021년까지 총 1,847편의 논문 제목, 주제어, 다국어 초록을 수집하였다. 대한원격탐사학회지의 전반적인 연구 동향과 자연·환경재해 분야의 연구동향을 확인하기 위해 Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)를 수행하였으며, 연구주제를 분류하고 연구동향을 확인하였다. 대한원격탐사학회지 전체 논문을 대상으로 LDA를 수행한 결과 4개의 연구주제('극권', '수권', '지권', '기권')로 분류할 수 있었으며, 시간에 따라 '기권'과 관련된 연구주제들이 성행하는 것을 확인하였다(linear slope=3.51 × 10-3, p< 0.05). 전체 논문 중 자연·환경재해 분야를 대상으로 LDA를 수행한 결과 7개의 연구주제('해양 오염', '대기 오염', '화산재해', '산불', '홍수', '가뭄', '폭우')로 분류할 수 있었으며, 시간에 따라 '대기 오염'과 관련된 연구주제들이 성행하는 것을 확인하였다(linear slope=2.61 × 10-3, p<0.05). 본 연구의 결과는 원격탐사를 다루는 다양한 분야의 연구자들에게 원격탐사 분야와 자연·환경재해 분야의 역사와 발전에 대한 이해를 제공했음에 의의가 있다.

  • Insulators contaminated by salt particles may cause flashovers in humid climate or light rain. Therefore, the quantity of salt on insulators should be monitored not to exceed a critical value. We propose a new remote sensing technique to measure the quantity of salt on insulators of power systems. The amount of the salt is measured from the intensity of the spontaneous emission from the sodium atoms. In this paper, a compact remote on-line salt-meter composed of Q Switch pulsed Nd:YAG laser and emission signal detection system will be introduced. And as the first result of this study, the operating characteristics of our developing laser system is also introduced.

AUTOMATIC DETECTION Of NARROW OPEN WATER STREAMS IN AMAZON FORESTS FROM JERS-1 SAR IMAGERY

  • We extracted narrow open water streams from JERS-1 SAR images of the Amazon rain forest. The extracted range of these streams were almost comparable to a high level extraction of the same streams from near-IR images of JERS-1 VNIR data notwithstanding that these features in SAR images show the strong dependence of the observation angle. Large water bodies are relatively easy to extract from JERS-1 SAR images, as they tend to appear as very dark areas; but streams whose width is nearly equal to or less than the spatial resolution no longer appear as very dark features. By using strong scatterers distributed sparsely along the radar facing sides of the streams, we can successfully estimate approximate ranges of waterways and then extract relatively dark line-like features within these ranges.
