The main objective of this paper is to present the rain cell size distribution observed during squall line episodes in the Sudano-Sahelian region. The used data were collected during the EPSAT Program [Etude des Precipitation par SATellite (Satellites Study of Precipitation)] which has been developed since 1958, on an experimental area located near Niamey, Niger (2 10′32"E, 13 28′38"N). The data were obtained with a C-band radar and a network composed of approximately 100 raingages over a 10,000 $\textrm{km}^2$. In this work a culling of the squall line episodes was made for the 1992 rainy season. After radar data calibration using the raingage network a number of PPI (Plan Position Indicator) images were generated. Each image was then treated in order to obtain a series of radar reflectivity (Z) maps. To describe the cell distribution, a contouring program was used to analyze the areas with rain rate greater than or equal to the contour threshold (R$\geq$$\tau$). 24700 contours were generated, where each iso-pleth belongs to a predefined threshold. Computing each cell surface and relating its area to an equi-circle (a circle having the same area as the cell), a statistical analysis was made. The results show that the number of rain cells having a given size is an inverse exponential function of the equivalent radius. The average and median equivalent radii ate 1.4 and 0.69 In respectively. Implications of these results for the precipitation estimation using threshold methods are discussed.
On 21 September 2010, one of Chuseok holidays in Korea, localized heavy rainfalls occurred over the midwestern region of the Korean peninsula. In this study MTSAT-2 infrared and water vapor channel imagery are examined to find out some features which are obvious in each stage of the life cycle of convective cell for this heavy rain event. Also the kinematic and thermodynamic features probably associated with them are investigated. The first clouds related with the Chuseok heavy rain are detected as low-level multicell cloud (brightness temperature: $-15{\sim}0^{\circ}C$) in the middle of the Yellow sea at 1630~1900 UTC on 20 Sept., which are probably associated with the convergence at 1000 hPa. Convective cells are initiated in the vicinity of Shantung peninsula at 1933 UTC 20, which have developed around the edge of the dark region in water vapor images. At two times of 0033 and 0433 UTC 21 the merging of two convective cells happens near midwestern coast of the peninsula and then they have developed rapidly. From 0430 to 1000 UTC 21, key features of convective cell include repeated formation of secondary cell, slow horizontal cloud motion, persistence of lower brightness temperature ($-75{\sim}-65^{\circ}C$), and relatively small cloud size (${\leq}-50^{\circ}C$) of about $30,000km^2$. Radar analysis showed that this heavy rain is featured by a narrow line-shaped rainband with locally heavy rainrate (${\geq}50$ mm/hr), which is located in the south-western edge of the convective cell. However there are no distinct features in the associated synoptic-scale dynamic forcing. After 1000 UTC 21 the convective cell grows up quickly in cloud size and then is dissipated. These satellite features may be employed for very short range forecast and nowcasting of mesoscale heavy rain system.

In order to clarify the effects of acid rain on soil microorganisms, the inpact of acid to soil microorganisms was survyed for 14 weeks using soil microcosms from industrial site A and B, Gaejok mountain, and Daechong lake in Taejeon area. The acid tolerant-microorganisms in natural soil, using culturing method were counted to be 5.8 - $8.0{\times}10^6$CFU/g soil. The number of microorganisms using ATP-biomass analysis for natural soil samples were also analyzed and 2.2 - $2.6{\times}10^9$ cell/g soil in industrial site A and B, Gaejok mountain, and Daechong lake were determined. In soil samples, which were treated with artificial acid rain, the number of acid tolerant microorganisms were counted 2.9 - $5.8{\times}10^5$ and 2.8 - $7.5{\times}10^8$, respectively. Therefore, we conformed that the numver of soil microorganisms were influenced by acid rain. Also, long term acid tolerant microorganisms were identified as Rhodotorula sp. and Pseudomonas sp.

The existing effective path-length model of ITU-R has some drawbacks: The prediction error is quite large compared to domestic measurement data and it is an empirical model in which the physical characteristics of rain cells are not considered. In this paper, a theoretical model for effective path-length using the rain-cell concept was proposed and its validity was verified using the measurement data. To analyze the statistical characteristics of rain cell parameters, the weather-radar data(CAPPI) measured by Korea Meterological Administration were analyzed and the correction factor was properly introduced to fit the Chollian beacon measurement data of ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute). To verify the proposed effective path-length model, it was compared with the Mugunghwa No. 5 beacon data measured in Chungnam National University with the support of ADD(Agency for Defense Development). It was confirmed that the prediction results of the proposed model are in good agreement with the measurement data.
A lab-made chemiluminescence system with air pump was developed for monitoring of some metal levels in rain. The air pump enabled injection of 17.7 $\mu$g samples into a glass cell filled with luminol-$H_2O_2$ reagent of typically 300 $\mu$L for chemiluminescence measurement. The monitored trend of total metal ions in the rain collected in our campus was compared with analytical results of each metal ion from GFAAS. The system was also demonstrated to determine $Cr^{6+}$ by reduction to $Cr^{3+}$ using $SnCl_2$. The limit of detection for $Cr^{6+}$ obtained by 4 measurements was 85.0 pg $mL^{-1}$ with a relative standard deviation of 3.4%. Although this system doesn’t have selectivity due to the characteristics of chemiluminescence, application of it to environmental monitoring as a sensor for some transition metal ions was demonstrated.
Thermodynamic conditions related with localized torrential rainfall in the middle west region of Korean peninsula are examined using radar rain rate and radiosonde observational data. Localized torrential rainfall events in this study are defined by three criteria base on 1) any one of Automated Synoptic Observing System (ASOS) hourly rainfall exceeds $30mmhr^{-1}$ around Osan, 2) the rain (> $1mmhr^{-1}$) area estimated from radar reflectivity is less than $20,000km^2$, and 3) the rain (> $10mmhr^{-1}$) cell is detected clearly and duration is short than 24 hr. As a result, 13 cases were selected during the summer season of 10 years (2004-13). It was found that the duration, the maximum rain area, and the maximum volumetric rain rate of convective cells (> $30mmhr^{-1}$) are less than 9hr, smaller than $1,000km^2$, and $15,000{\sim}60,000m^3s^{-1}$ in these cases. And a majority of cases shows the following thermodynamic characteristics: 1) Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) > $800Jkg^{-1}$, 2) Convective Inhibition (CIN) < $40Jkg^{-1}$, 3) Total Precipitable Water (TPW) ${\approx}$ 55 mm, and 4) Storm Relative Helicity (SRH) < $120m^2s^{-2}$. These cases mostly occurred in the afternoon. These thermodynamic conditions indicated that these cases were caused by strong atmospheric instability, lifting to overcome CIN, and sufficient moisture. The localized torrential rainfall occurred with deep moisture convection result from the instability caused by convective heating.

Marine radars are affected by sea and rain clutters, which can make target discrimination difficult. The clutter standard deviation and improvement factor are applied using multiple parameters-moving speed of radar, antenna speed, angle, etc. When a radar signal is processed, a Data Matrix Bank (DMB) filter can be applied to remove sea clutters. This filter allows detection of a target, and since it is not affected by changes in adjacent clutters resulting from a multi- target signal, sea state clutters can be removed. In this paper, we study the level for clutter removal and the method for target detection. In addition, we design a signal processing algorithm for marine radars, analyze the performance of the DMB filter algorithm, and provide a DMB filter algorithm design. We also perform a DMB filter algorithm analysis and simulation, and then apply this to the DMB filter and cell-average constant false alarm rate design to show comparative results.
As impervious area increases due to urbanization, rainfall on the impervious area does not infiltrate into the ground, and stormwater drains quickly. Low impact development (LID) practices have been suggested as alternatives to infiltrate and store water in soil layers. The practices in South Korea is applied to urban development projects, urban renewal projects, urban regeneration projects, etc., it is required to perform literature research, watershed survey, soil quality, etc. for the LID practices implementation. Prior to the LID implementation at fields, there is a need to simulate its' effect on watershed hydrology, and Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) provides an opportunity to simulate LID practices. The LIDs applied in South Korea are infiltration-based practices, vegetation-based practices, rainwater-harvesting practices, etc. Vegetation-based practices includes bio-retention cell and rain garden, bio-retention cells are mostly employed in the model, adjusting the model parameters to simulate various practices. The bio-retention cell requires inputs regarding surface layer, soil layer, and drain layer, but the inputs for the drain layer are applied without sufficient examination, while the model parameters or inputs are somewhat influential to the practice effects. Thus, the approach to simulate vegetation-based LID practices in SWMM uses was explored and suggested for better LID simulation in South Korea.

The demand for rainfall data in gridded digital formats has increased in recent years due to the close linkage between hydrological models and decision support systems using the geographic information system. One of the most widely used tools for digital rainfall mapping is the PRISM (parameter-elevation regressions on independent slopes model) which uses point data (rain gauge stations), a digital elevation model (DEM), and other spatial datasets to generate repeatable estimates of monthly and annual precipitation. In the PRISM, rain gauge stations are assigned with weights that account for other climatically important factors besides elevation, and aspects and the topographic exposure are simulated by dividing the terrain into topographic facets. The size of facet or grid cell resolution is determined by the density of rain gauge stations and a $5{\times}5km$ grid cell is considered as the lowest limit under the situation in Korea. The PRISM algorithms using a 270m DEM for South Korea were implemented in a script language environment (Python) and relevant weights for each 270m grid cell were derived from the monthly data from 432 official rain gauge stations. Weighted monthly precipitation data from at least 5 nearby stations for each grid cell were regressed to the elevation and the selected linear regression equations with the 270m DEM were used to generate a digital precipitation map of South Korea at 270m resolution. Among 1.25 million grid cells, precipitation estimates at 166 cells, where the measurements were made by the Korea Water Corporation rain gauge network, were extracted and the monthly estimation errors were evaluated. An average of 10% reduction in the root mean square error (RMSE) was found for any months with more than 100mm monthly precipitation compared to the RMSE associated with the original 5km PRISM estimates. This modified PRISM may be used for rainfall mapping in rainy season (May to September) at much higher spatial resolution than the original PRISM without losing the data accuracy.
To investigate the long-term corrosion resistance of an uncoated weathering steel, an important outdoor constructional steel material, skyward surfaces of the weathering steel and a control steel initially exposed to rural and industrial atmospheres for 9 years were electrochemically tested in neutral artificial rain in terms of electrochemical potentials, impedances, and anodic potentiodynamic polarization curves. Their results were then discussed. A quite passive and stable rust layer to the artificial rain was well formed on the skyward surface of the weathering steel exposed to the industrial and rural atmospheres, and its corrosion rate in the artificial rain was measured to be about a low $3{{\mu}m}/y$. Continuous immersion of all the weathered surfaces in the artificial rain revealed the gradual degradation of the weathered corrosion layers on the steel, resulting in a cathodically controlled corrosion of the substrate steel by the electrochemical measurements. Alloy components of the weathering steel were found to retard the degradation of the weathered corrosion layers on the steel in the artificial rain. For better corrosion evaluation of the weathering steel, more electrochemical measurements of surfaces that have been exposed for more than 9 years to more closely simulated atmospheric waters are needed. These measurements are almost non-destructive and can provide online and in situ information on the corrosion rate, the development of corrosion and the conditions of rust layers on any interested surface and at any exposure time of the steel, so they can be effectively applicable to the corrosion evaluation of steel structures such as bridges, towers, and architectures by forming an electrochemical cell on an interested structural surface and by using a portable electrochemical instrument.
