Vision based Monitoring System for Safety in Railway Station (철도역사 안전을 위한 비전기반 승강장 모니터링 시스템)

  • Passenger safety is a primary concern of railway system but, it has been urgent issue that dozens of people are killed every year when they are fallen from train platforms. In this paper, we propose a vision based monitoring system for railway station platform. The system immediately perceives dangerous factors of passengers on the platform by using image processing technology. To monitor almost entire length of the track line in the platform, we use several video cameras. Each camera conducts surveillance its own preset monitoring area whether human or dangerous object was fallen in the area. Moreover, to deal with the accident immediately, the system provides local station, central control room employees and train driver with the video information about the accident situation including alarm message. This paper introduces the system overview and detection process with experimental results. According to the results, we expect the proposed system will play a key role for establishing highly intelligent monitoring system in railway.

  • This paper studied on the VVVF Inverter for 1C4M propulsion system of railway traction. The paper includes the comparison along a VVVF Inverter electric power conversion element for an electric railcar(GTO, IGBT). These inverters are composed of high power IGBTs and controlled by compact control units. The stack is simplified and optimized by using plate bus and IGBT driver units of hybrid-type.

  • The launch of KTX (Korea Train Express) has brought the changes of people's life. People can get more time to work or enjoy leisure comfortably because the transfer time is decreased. According to these changes, the role of normal trains and express trains' drivers is getting more important. The purpose of this study is to suggest the advanced vision of Korean railway through comparing the domestic driver's qualification requirements of normal trains and express trains with international ones which are more developed.

  • The railway safety sign, which is a part of railway signal system, is installed at the lineside to inform a train driver the position, direction or condition concerning the train operation by its shapes, colors or symbols. The sign in the existed line of South Korea has low-level of visibility and legibility, so that it is difficult for the drivers to understand the meaning of a sign enough by just seeing its letters or pictogram. This paper is aimed at reviewing the design problems of the sign in existed line and developing the design to enhance its visibility and legibility and verifying its effectiveness.

  • Today, the railway is very important in modern society means of public transport. Many people use the railway each day. On the other hand, with regard to railway accidents every year due to damage caused many casualties. In this paper, we propose railroad crossing accident prevention system for monitoring the situation based on OSGi for safe railway operations, about the same railroad crossing a dangerous place. This system, communication between the train and railroad crossing. So the information from the train crossing while a train driver was monitored in real time with more information than can help prevent accidents on the crossing. Using the OSGi framework, can be used widely in many hardware.

  • Railway system which has latent loss of lives and property by big accident with that human error such as locomotive driver, manager, signaller, and the others involved. So human error management is needed to control this complex system and to confirm safety of it. Rail human error research for managing human resource has grown rapidly in both quantity and quality of output over the past few years. The continual influences of safety concerns, new technical system opportunities, reorganization of the business, needs to increase effective, reliable and safe use of capacity, and increased society, media and government interest have now accelerated rail human factors research programmes in several countries. The objective of this research is to improve safety and to reduce accidents in korean railway system, through the application of research results to the investigation of requirement for human error.

Comparison of Deep-Learning Algorithms for the Detection of Railroad Pedestrians

  • Railway transportation is the main land-based transportation in most countries. Accordingly, railway-transportation safety has always been a key issue for many researchers. Railway pedestrian accidents are the main reasons of railway-transportation casualties. In this study, we conduct experiments to determine which of the latest convolutional neural network models and algorithms are appropriate to build pedestrian railroad accident prevention systems. When a drone cruises over a pre-specified path and altitude, the real-time status around the rail is recorded, following which the image information is transmitted back to the server in time. Subsequently, the images are analyzed to determine whether pedestrians are present around the railroads, and a speed-deceleration order is immediately sent to the train driver, resulting in a reduction of the instances of pedestrian railroad accidents. This is the first part of an envisioned drone-based intelligent security system. This system can effectively address the problem of insufficient manual police force.

  • TECA (Terminal Cabin), the terminal device which offers the information to the driver about the condition of High Speed Train(KTX), analyzes the system of train and plays a role of corrective maintenance guideline to a driver when a breakdown occurs. It also supports the driver to decide the situation of the train by offering a necessary information, in communicating with MPU(Main Processor Unit). For Localization of TECA, it is necessary to analyze communication protocol between TECA and MPU. As a part of analysis, communication protocol between OBCS(on-board computer system) and add-on devices has analyzed for the first step. Also with protocol analyzer appropriate method was offered for TECA and MPU protocol analysis. Finally, by appling proposed method to the drivers consol suitability was verified.

  • In the last decade, various situations were simulated through virtual environment due to rapid improvement of computer capability and technology. Transportation engineering also has adopted the virtual environment facility in order to identify drivers behaviour under various circumstances. This study aims to evaluate driver reactions to the introduction of new ITS interventions at railway crossings (RLX) in driving simulator. Three ITS safety devices were used to figure out how drivers reacted to them. In addition, a survey was conducted to find participants' work load and acceptance of the technology. The ultimate purpose of this paper is to evaluate ITS safety devices in various aspects. Each participant made 3 runs (2 baselines, 1 ITS randomly) for approximately 20 minutes each. The participants answered that current railway crossings did not look safe prior to experiment. They responded that the use of ITS technologies were easy and the technologies were more effective on passive railway crossings.

  • Recently, The TCN(Train Communication Network} as the distributed control systems for electric vehicles, which is the international standard of the intra vehicle communication, actively recognizes variations and supports reconfiguration of the train network when a vehicle is separated or recombined. The technique of reconfiguration to take variety and interoperability of a vehicle constitution is used when the vehicle constitution is changed. At the time, each node making up vehicle network shares the information about the variation of vehicle constitutions and the state of nodes. In the hierarchical TCN structure, an exchange of data becomes available as a work to transmit information between components is performed at the node playing a role of gateway. This paper proposes a protocol to transmit the information of the train reconfiguration. The protocol gives an application to renew a list for transmitting information and to perform the transmission that can guarantee periodic and non-periodic data transmission between nodes when the network nodes changed by a variation of the network state are reconfigured. If use this protocol, can use functions that are offered in the electric railcar at the same time that composition of vehicles is completed without delay. And when driver of the electric railcar inspect before running of vehicles, can confirm state of vehicles visually through monitor in driver's room.
