A Comparative Study on Railway Accident Safety Statistics among Nations and Other Transportation Modes (국내 철도 안전수준의 비교평가에 관한 연구)

  • As a result of investment in railway safety since 2004, railway accidents have been reduced by half and we reached a high level of safety compared to other countries. But people are still worries about railway accident, and want safer railway. It is difficult to determine which level of safety must be achieved due to lack of comparative studies on railway safety among different countries and other transportation modes. In this study, a comparative study on railway accident statistics and various transportation modes is performed. The results of this research can be used for the determination of weak areas of railway safety and the level of safety to be achieved.

  • Compared with other transport means, safety and timeliness are the merits of railways. Unexpectedly when accident happens, much time and human strength are required to cope with the accident. And for swift recovery, systematic rehabilitation is needed. Recently using MTS(Moving picture Transmission System), we can perform accident rehabilitation and recording work efficiently. MTS is the device that transmits continuous picture information from accident field to control center. e are developing the appropriate system to railway situation to make use of the existing information communication technology, processing technology of video-tex, super high speed transmission technology through fiber-optic, copper cable and network description of information Technology, etc. If these communication-based can technologies are applied to railway system, railway managers can control the accident by inspecting the picture of accident field and can contribute to the safe train operation and the improvement of railway management. In this paper, we investigate the connecting methods when optical fiber is used for moving picture data transmission of train accidents, and its problems. And, we validate MTS's performance through about 28km section of field test.

  • Train operation simulation program models the railway facilities such as railway network configuration, railway parameters and signalling equipments, as well as the train performances such as traction performance, schedules, timetable. As the program can emulate exactly the train movements on the railway network by using computer simulation techniques, it can be applied to the optimization of the train operation plan and the reform of railway facilities. This paper provides a simulation case study which shows that we can simulate exactly the unusual situations of train traffic operation when train movements are disturbed by accidents, and also provide the effective countermeasure to minimize the train delays.

  • Rail network authority have to do the safety ensuring activities including the maintenance of railway facility, integrated performance verification between the facilities and related rolling stock and safety inspections, etc. When constructing the new lines or revising the conventional lines, full system commissioning should be done before the revenue service with railway operator. To develop the optimal full system commissioning model, the status of domestic and foreign railway facility and railway accidents are analysed and the problems of the safety management are derived. As one of countermeasures for the problems, the procedures and criteria for the full system commissioning are developed.

  • High speed and large transfer capability of railroad has been an important issue in Korean since KTX opening at 2004. Improvement projects for railway electrification are progressed in the conventional line as well as high speed line because various operation plan is performed such as interaction between high speed line and conventional line and operation of tilting train etc. Especially, railway electrification has many advantages which are cost effective and eco-friendly. But it also has some problems such as construction costs and accidents due to electrification. Therefore this paper developed measuring index of electrification railway benefit. By comparing between diesel and electrical locomotive, the operations of before and after the electrification and measurements quantitative index such as energy efficiency, enlargement of transfer capability, environmental pollution and maintenance and efficiency of operation is presented. In the future, Overall benefit and cost of railway electrification will be analyzed.

  • In order to investigate the voltage drop compensation effect of AT for domestic railway vehicle base, the parameters of AT voltage drop of railroad car base are Z3 (Impedance of feeder line), Xn ( Distance from railroad vehicle to AT to SS), and Dn (distance between both ATs of railway vehicle).In addition, when installed in a SSP for a railway vehicle base, there is no AT and feeder line in the railway vehicle base except for the SSP for the main line and the SSP for the railway vehicle base, so that if zero or ignored, the AC single-phase two- It can be confirmed that it becomes a form.

  • Indian railways has been regularly in the news albeit for the wrong reasons. The frequency with which train accidents have been taking place has led to serious doubts in the public mind about the safety of rail travel and also the health of the network. Against this background, an attempt is made in this paper to assess the trends in railway accidents for the period from 2000-01 to 2009-10. The paper also highlighted the various measures taken by IR to prevent accidents to ensure safety to the public.

  • This paper aims to find out characteristics of railroad weather-related accidents and incidents and to proposes the plan of railroad disaster prevention according to the precipitation. For this, we make the database about the railroad weather-related accidents and incidents and analysis the relationship between the hourly and cumulative precipitation and railroad accidents. The results are as follows; The weather events that have the most occurrence frequency of railroad weather-related accidents and incidents is a rainfall of the precipitation and then the cause of that was the falling rocks and the collapsed roadbed. The rainfall patterns of collapsed roadbed were classified into 4 groups. When the variation of hourly rainfall is 10/15 mm/hr over, we need to consider the caution/stop of train operation and a speed limit, respectively.

  • According to ' Monthly report of train accidents and incidents ' of KNR, 95 numbers of rolling stock fire accidents/incidents had happened during last five years(from 1999 to 2003). Among them, there have happened only one injured accident which happened at Whamyung station in 1999. But it is necessary to consider a countermeasure for fire accidents/incidents, because they have big risk which might produce a large scale damage and lots of injured persons as the Taegu subway fire accident last year. This paper analyzes the rolling stock fire accidents/incidents which have happened during last five years in KNR, and suggests their countermeasures.

  • According to ' Monthly report of train accidents and incidents ' of KNR 184 numbers of derailment accidents/incidents had happened during last five years(from 1999 to 2003). Among them, there have happened only four injured accidents such as West Daejeon derailment accident, Jungang line, Pyegje station, and Daejeon station one. But it is necessary to consider a countermeasure for derailment, as its accident/incident have big risk which might produce a large scale damage and lots of injured persons. This paper analyzes the derailment accidents/incidents which have happened for last five years in KNR, and suggests their countermeasures.
