Understanding of fracture networks and rock mass properties during tunnel construction is extremely important for the prediction of dangers during excavation, and for deciding on appropriate excavation techniques and support. However, rapid construction process do not allow sufficient time for surveys and interpretations for spatial distributions of fractures and rock mass properties. This study introduces a new statistical approach for predicting joint distributions at foreside of current excavation face during the excavation process. The proposed methodology is based on a cumulative space diagram for joint sets. The diagram displays the cumulative spacing between adjacent joints on the vertical axis and the sequential position of each joint plotted at equally spaced intervals on the horizontal axis. According to the diagram, the degree of linearity of points representing the regularity of joint spacing; a linear trend of the points indicates that the joints are evenly spaced, with the slope of the line being directly related to the spacing. The linear points which are stepped indicates that the fracture set show clustered distribution. A clustered pattern within the linear group of points indicates a clustered joint distribution. Fractures surveyed from an excavated space can be plotted on this diagram, and the diagram can then be extended further according to the plotted diagram pattern. The extension of the diagram allows predictions about joint spacing in areas that have not yet been excavated. To test the model, we collected and analyzed data during excavation of a 10-m-long tunnel. Fractures in a 3-m zone behind the excavation face were predicted during the excavation, and the predictions were compared with observations. The methodology yielded reasonably good predictions of joint locations.
In this case of "Seongnam~Yeoju double-lanes railroad construction", there were safety facilities which were concerned about damages from vibration and noise. In the project design stage, the rock-splitter method was designed to prevent them. The electronic blasting was considered to improve construction speed and economic value as an alternative tunnelling method, complying with the site's vibration criteria(cowhouse : 0.09cm/sec, residence : 0.2cm/sec). In the environment evaluation report of the eDev, tunnel electronic blasting systems, the blasting pollutions can be managed by the electronic blasting method. The results were successfully conducted with high speed construction without any damages to adjacent facilities.

There is a few problems in the preliminary seismic performance evaluation procedure of subway infrastructures, such as cut-and-cover tunnel structures and bridge structures, recently because the characteristics of subway infrastructures are not properly considered in the procedure. In particular, the evaluation procedure of vehicular bridge structures is applied to subway bridges without any modification. Moreover, the present evaluation procedure is lack of both theoretical and empirical backgrounds, which makes the evaluation less reliable. This paper presents problems in the existing preliminary evaluation procedure and proposes possible modification(revision) to the procedure.

The efficiency of railway track cleaning vehicle for eliminating fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in a subway tunnel depends strongly on the structure of the air blowing and suction system installed under the train. To increase the efficiency of underbody suction system, this paper proposes a novel method to use the Coanda effect for the air blower and dust suction module. In particular, through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, the flow control device induced by the Coanda effect enables an increase in the overall flow velocity and to stabilize the flow distribution of the suction module at a control angle of $90^{\circ}$. In addition, the flow velocity drop at the edge of the air knife-type blower can be improved by placing small inserts at the edge of the blower. Those 4 modular designs of the dust suction system can help remove the dust accumulated on the track and tunnel by optimizing the blowing and suction flows.
Transmitting correct train control information is important in a train control system which demands safety. The train control information includes the maximum speed of trains, position of preceding trains, incline of tracks and curve sections etc. A radio frequency-communication based train control system is influenced by the noise and interference because the train control information is transmitted by wireless between a on-board system and wayside system. The radio frequency-communication based train control system is a mobile communication system due to moving trains. The inter symbol interference(ISI) occurs by the multipath fading in the mobile ommunication system. As signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) is decreased by the ISI, the train control information is not received correctly. In case of tunnel section, numerous reflected waves exist. Therefore, the power density of receiver is decreased by difference among the received times, magnitudes, phases through the multipath. So, the train suddenly is stopped by the fail-safe operation in the train control system on account of decreasing the power density of receiver. In this paper, a line of sight model-(Additive White Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel), rayleigh and rician fading model are presented. Probability density functions which are related to the SNR are derived from the models. The fading phenomenon severely occurs as a result of analyzing the probability density functions. So, the space diversity method is used in order to reduce the fading effect and it is demonstrated by using Matlab program.

The Korea Foldable safe pathway system is an evacuation support system to get temporary evacuation route in railway tunnel and large space fires. A prevention smoke screen is unfolded in fires and it is needed to prevent heat and smoke from fire source. Therefore, ventilation system for positive pressure condition is equipped with foldable safe pathway system. Numerical analyses of temperature and pressure distribution with distance from fire source were performed considering fire scenario of new train vehicle. The smoke temperatures did not exceed $200^{\circ}C$ that distance from the fire source was more than 20 m and smoke pressure was reduced with distance from fire source. Maximum smoke pressure was 14 Pa and average pressure was 6 Pa in position of prevention smoke screen. As results, to install foldable safe pathway system, ventilation system is need to maintain 6 Pa positive pressure condition.

Recently, expansion of urban and social infrastructures is planned to go through the transfer of military facilities or crossing the infrastructures via underground tunnels. However, when crossing facilities such as ammunition and explosive storages, a high level of safety assessment is required to prevent an accidental explosion of ground ammunition. In this study, a case study was conducted to evaluate the effect of blasting for the construction of tunnel on the ground ammunition facilities. The design section of Sinansan train operated by the Korea Railroad Authority with agreement of the Ministry of National Defense was selected. For the purpose of this study, the vibration velocity due to explosion was predicted by using GTS-NX, a numerical analysis program. Through literature review, it was confirmed that the vibration velocity of 0.2cm/sec can be a safety evaluation standard. These safety evaluation indicators and procedures used in this study can be utilized as an index of safety evaluation in the planning of social infrastructures that cross the ammunition facilities in the future.
Underground construction such as tunneling can induce damages on the surrounding rock mass, due to the stress concentration of in situ stresses and excessive energy input during construction sequence, such as blasting. The developed damage on the rock mass can have substantial influence on the mechanical and hydraulic behaviors of the rock masses around a tunnel. In this study, investigation on the generation of damage around an opening in a jointed rock model under biaxial compression condition was conducted. The joint dip angles employed are 30, 45, and 60 degrees to the horizontal, and the synthetic rock mass was made using early strength cement and water. From the biaxial compression test, initiation and propagation of tensile cracks at norm to the joint angle were found. The propagated tensile cracks eventually developed rock blocks, which were dislodged from the rock mass. Furthermore, the propagation process of the tensile cracks varies with joint angle: lower joint angle model shows more stable and progressive tensile crack propagation. The development of the tensile crack can be explained under the hypothesis that the rock segment encompassed by the joint set is subjected to the developing moment, which can be induced by the geometric irregularity around the opening in the rock model. The experiment results were simulated by using discrete element method PFC 2D. From the simulation, as has been observed from the test, a rock mass with lower joint angle produces wider damage region and rock block by tensile cracks. In addition, a rock model with lower joint angle shows progressive tensile cracks generation around the opening from the investigation of the interacted tensile cracks.
In the modern society various types of transportation mode are utilized, among them the subway system is the one of the main transportation mode which more than 7.21 million people ride a day. Because of interests on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of underground public facilities, concerns on IAQ of subway system by many people are increasing. There are several approach to improve IAQ of subway station, such as installing platform screen door (PSD), frequent tunnel washing-out, and etc, however there has not been any attempt to improve IAQ of subway cabin inside. Most technologies for removing airborne particulate matters are known to be difficult to adopt on the subway cabin since the problem of maintenance cost. Therefore, the ultimate object of this study is a practical development of cabin air cleaning system which can reduce the concentration of airborne particles and harmful gases at the same time. The subway cabin air purifier (SCAP) was developed for removing particulate matters and gases pollutants inside a cabin. The whole system was designed and the roll-filter device was manufactured based on numerical prediction results. It is expected that SCAP could reduce indoor air pollutants in the subway cabin practically and it can be applied to other part of transportation vehicles.
