  • In order to develop domestic railway technology, it is necessary that manufacturing technology of turnout should be kept up with update level, because turnout is the core component of high speed railway. Manganese crossing made of high manganese alloy steel is a important component of turnout. So far, this could not have been welded with rail steel due to metallic problem in Korea. However, joint technology hereunder between manganese crossing and rail by using Flash Butt Welding which is developed by Kangwon Railtech Co., Ltd is the state of the art and enable to realize rail continuousness in turnout section, speed up train velocity, reduce maintenance cost, and enhance riding quality.

  • The research on the track performance and stability of the tilting-train was performed and the settlement of the roadbed was estimated as the tilting train was being operated on the rail joint under the allowable velocity subjected to the track performance and the stability of the tilting-train. Since the impact on the continuous welded rail (CWR) induced by the tilting-train loading is different from the impact on the rail joint, it needs to investigate the settlement of the roadbed beneath the CWR. In this study, when the tilting-train is being operated on the CWR under the allowable velocity subjected to the track performance and the stability of the tilting-train, the settlement and bearing capacity of the roadbed beneath the CWR have been evaluated using numerical analysis and compared with those beneath the rail joint. The numerical results show that the settlements of the roadbed beneath CWR and rail joint are amount to 71.2% and 88.8% of the allowable settlement, respectively. And the stresses are amount to 10.4% and 12.1% of the allowable bearing capacity, respectively.

  • This study addresses the analysis of the behavioral characteristics of bridge expansion joints under wheel loading through wheel load test and the proposal of relevant wheel load specifications for expansion joints. To that goal, specimens of rail and finger expansion joints that are widely used in Korea were fabricated and subjected to static wheel load test using a real tire wheel. The wheel load distribution factor in the rail and finger expansion joints in contact with the wheel load was evaluated. The evaluation revealed that the portion of load sustained by the central rail of rail expansion joint was decreasing with larger wheel load, and that the portion of load sustained by the finger expansion joint was practically insensitive to the increase of the contact area and remained nearly constant. Since the wheel load characteristics showed large difference compared to former design specifications, it appears necessary to prepare rational specifications relative to the distribution of the wheel load contact pressure for the design of expansion joints.

  • To absorb the deformation of ,external live load, thermal gradient, shrinkage and creep in bridge structures and general structures, expansion joint has to be established. Especially expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge has to accomodate the static and dynamic forces and it not only has the durability of itself but also maintain the durability of structure by preventing the leakage of water. The actual used product of expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge is only ones made in France, Germany and Japan. In this study, the development process and test results of developed expansion joint are introduced which has the functional operation and durability enough to apply to high-speed railway bridges, roadway bridges and general structures. The tests consist of fatigue-durability test of 3 million times by high-speed rail load, leakage test and jack-up test for verifying the possibility of exchanging it. The performance of developed expansion joint satisfy the specification of Korea High Speed Rail Construction Authority.

  • Recently continuous welded rail is generally used to ensure running performances and to overcome the problems such as structural vulnerability and fastener damage at the rail expansion joint. Though the use of continuous welded rail on bridge has the advantage of decreasing the vibration and damage of rail, it still the risk of buckling and breaking of rail due to change of temperature, starting and/or breaking force, axial stress concentration and so on. So, VIC code and many methods has been developed by researchers considering rail-bridge interaction. Although there are many research concerning stability of continuous welded rail about temperature change on bridge and starting and/or breaking force, the study of continuous welded mil for earthquake load is still unsufficient. In this study, the nonlinear seismic response analysis of continuous welded rail on bridge considering soil-structure interaction, geotechnical characteristic of foundation and earthquake isolation equipment has been performed to examine the stability of continuous welded rail.

  • There are three examples of noise reduction test by rail welding. One of them is tested at electric car running area and another is tested at expansion joint and long welded rail and the third is tested at open deck bridge. We can know from the result that the noise reduction effect of rail welding is very different to the type of track and the car. The condition of the test has some differences, but it may be useful reference of noise reduction.

  • The additional axial force of CWR(continuous welded rail) is occurred by structure-track interaction, in reverse, fixed supports of structure are applied the large load by that. Ratio of load which transferred on support through the bridge superstructure with one-side REJ by acceleration and braking load are stated in High-Speed Rail Design Criteria(2005). On the other hand the horizontal forces of support delivered to the load due to thermal loads has been no report about the criteria. Therefore, this study was performed the review of the reaction and displacement on support by structure-track interaction in a special bridge(composite brdiges, 45+55+55+45=200m) with REJ acting on the temperature load. As a result, because fixed support of a special bridge or a continuous bridge with REJ under the temperature load which is constant load has been acted the large lateral load by structure-track interaction, when determining the fixed bearing capacity of structure should be reflected in the results to secure the safety of structures was confirmed.

  • Cheongdam Bridge in Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line No.7 recently constructed has 180 meters (2@90m) of expansion length of structure (distance between fixed points). Track type is all ballasted track and rail expansion joint is installed at every movable point. However, there is no expansion joint at the transition area between ballasted track ,end deck. By this reason, the rail buckling has been occurred every year and there is actually an abnormal behavior in expansion. In this study, based on the modeling of the Cheongdam Bridge, the element of interacting relationship between track and structure which is influential to track displacement in long-span bridge was analyzed and, finally, the methodology to ensure the continuous-welded rail in Cheongdam Bridge was suggested.

  • Maglev using EMS becomes unstable by unexpected big air-gap disturbance. The main causes of the unexpected air-gap disturbance are step-wise rail joint and large distance between rail splices. For the stable operation of the Maglev, the conventional system uses the threshold method, which selects one gap sensor among two gap sensors installed on the magnet to read the gap between magnet and guide rail. But the threshold method with a wide bandwidth makes the discontinuous air-gap signal at the rail joints because of the offset in air gap sensors and/or the step-wise rail joins. Further more, in the case of the one with a narrow bend-width, it makes Maglev system unstable because of frequent alternation. In this paper, a new method using fuzzy rule to reduce air-gap disturbances proposed to improve the stability of Maglev system. It treats the air-gap signal from dual gap sensors effectively to make continuous signal without air gap disturbance. Simulation and experiment results proved that the proposed scheme was effective to reduce air-gap disturbance from dual gap sensors in rail joints.

  • In this paper, thermite and gas pressure weldings have been used to join rails in-track and analyzed as functions of hardness and wear characteristics. The wear rate of thermite welded rail is low compared with that of gas pressure welded rail, which is tested in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The hardness of thermite welded materials is relatively high and narrowly distributed between three zones; welded part, thermally affected zone, and base matrix. Wear of a welded rail may be a major factor in railroad maintenance costs and failures at the rail-rail huh joint.
