A 37-year-old male with the complaint of intermittent gingival swelling and dull pain associated with the food impaction of the mandibular third molar area was referred to our department of Chonbuk National University Hospital. The dental history of the patient showed that he had extracted the maxillary left third molar without complications two years ago. Intraoral and panoramic radiographs showed diffuse increased radiopacity of the maxilla and mandible. The trabecular pattern was obliterated. Postero-anterior skull and lateral skull radiographs showed thickening of cortical bone and diffuse increased radiopacity of the skull. Additional radiographs showed similar changes in the lumbar spine, clavicles, iliac bone and femur. However, no evidence of osteomyelitis was observed clinically and radiographically. Laboratory findings showed normal values of serum calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase. Based on the radiographic examinations and the laboratory findings, final diagnosis was made as a benign osteopetrosis.

Radiographic features of maxillary sinusitis, types of mucosal thickening, types of bony wall change, and relationship between the radiographic features and symptoms of patients were observed and classified in the Waters' view of 360 patients with 441 maxillary sinuses demonstrating radiologic changes. And the classification of antral floor and pathologic change was observed in the 154 periapi- cal films. Finally, the value of orthopantomography in the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis was evaluated in the 138 cases, The obtained results were as followings. 1. Among 441 maxillary sinuses examined by Waters' projection, mucosal thickening was seen in 56.7% and generalized opacification was seen in 36.3%. 2. Among 270 mucosal thickenings classified 8 types, overall regularly thickened type was the highest in incidence (36.3%). 3. Bony wall change was seen in 35.6% of all cases and the indistinct white line of the cortical plates was the highest in incidence (78.2%) among the 6 types. 4. Pain (41.9%) and pus discharge (21.0%) were the most frequent symptoms. And pus discharge, foul odor, and headache was more prevalent in type of generalized opacification than any other types. 5. Regular pneumatization involving all roots of premolars and molars was the highest in incidence (55.0%). The first molar presented the most frequent involvement (61.0%). 6. In orthopantomography, 46.4% showed apparent increased radiopacity and 23.9% showed suspicious increased radiopacity in comparison to Waters' projection.
This study was aimed to compare the radiopacity of four kinds of currently available resin based implant cements using digital radiography. Materials and Methods: Four resin-based implant cements((Estemp $Implant^{TM}$ (Spident, Incheon, Korea), $Premier^{(R)}$Implant (Premier, Pennsylvania, USA), $Cem-Implant^{TM}$ (B.J.M lab, Or-yehuda, Israel), $InterCem^{TM}$ (SCI-PHARM, California, USA)) and control group (Elite Cement $100^{TM}$ (GC, Tokyo, Japan) ) were mixed and cured according to the manufacturer's instructions on the custom made split-type metal mold. A total of 150 specimens of each cement were prepared and each specimen (purity over 99%) was placed side-by-side with an aluminum step wedge for image taking with Intraoral X-ray unit (Esx, Vatech, Korea) and digital X-ray sensor (EzSensor, Vatech, Korea). For the evaluation of aluminum wedge equivalent thickness (mm Al), ImageJ 1.47 m (Wayne Rasband, National Institutes of Health, USA) and Color inspector 3D ver 2.0 (Interaktive Visualisierung von Farbraumen, Berlin, Germany) programs were used. Result: Among the 5 cements, Elite cement $100^{TM}$ (control group) showed the highest radio-opacity in all thickness. In the experimental group, $InterCem^{TM}$ had the highest radio-opacity followed by $Premier^{(R)}$ Implant $Cement^{TM}$, $Cem-Implant^{TM}$ and Estemp $Implant^{TM}$. In addition, $InterCem^{TM}$ showed radio-opacity that met the ISO No. 4049 standard in all the tested specimen thickness. Cem-Implant on 0.5 mm thickness showed radiopacity that met the ISO No. 4049 standard. Conclusion: Among the implant resin-based cements tested in the study, $Premier^{(R)}$ Implant Cement and Estemp $Implant^{TM}$ did not show appropriate radio-opacity. Only $InterCem^{TM}$ and $Cem-Implant^{TM}$ 0.5 mm specimen had the proper radiopacity and met the experiment standard.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the validity of 2 kinds of digital radiography techniques in evaluating the radiopacity comparison of restorative materials and to determine the relative radiopacities of several kinds of compomer and flow able resin using these techniques. After taking radiographs of an aluminum step wedge, con-elation of optical density calibration curves were evaluated between conventional radiography with transmission densitometer and CD-Dent digital radiography (storage phosphor system) and between conventional one and RVG$^{(R)}$ digital radiography (CCD system). Compomers such as Dyract$^{(R)}$ AP, Compoglass$^{(R)}$, and Dyract flow$^{(R)}$, and flowable resins such as Ultraseal-XT$^{(R)}$ plus$^{TM}$, Revolution$^{TM}$, Aeliteflo$^{TM}$ and Tetric-flow$^{(R)}$ were used. Five specimens of 5mm in diameter and 2 mm thick were fabricated with each material. Radiopacities of the materials were measured using the above radiographic techniques and compared. The results were as follows: 1. When the optical density calibration curves were compared, conventional radiography and both CD-Dent and RVG$^{(R)}$ digital radiographies showed very high inverse correlations (${\gamma}$=-0.95, ${\gamma}$=-0.98 ; p<0.05). 2. All the tested restorative materials showed levels of radiopacity the same as or greater than that of dentin (p<0.05), Radiopacities of Dyract$^{(R)}$ AP, Compoglass$^{(R)}$, and Tetric flow$^{(R)}$ were greater than those of Revolution$^{TM}$, Aeliteflo$^{TM}$, or dentin (p<0.05). 3. Radiopacities of Dyract$^{(R)}$ AP, Compoglass$^{(R)}$, and Tetric flow$^{(R)}$ were shown to be greater than that of enamel when conventional radiography and CD-Dent digital radiography were used (p<0.05). Radiopacity of Dyract flow$^{(R)}$ was shown to be greater than that of Enamel when conventional radiography was used (p<0.05).

Purpose: Maxillary sinus elevation has been widely used to enable insertion of endosseous implants in severely resorbed maxilla. Maxillary sinusitis after this procedure was considered to be the major drawback, therefore, preoperative evaluation of paranasal sinus is considered to be important. In order to evaluate the condition of the sinus, we used Waters' projection. In this study, asymptomatic patients were evaluated by Waters' view, and compared to timing to assess the sinus cavity. Methods: The retrospective study was based on 14 patients who were performed sinus elevation surgery in Seoul National University Dental Hospital. These patients did not show any signs of maxillary sinusitis. These patients were taken Waters' view at preoperative, postoperative 1 day, 3 months, 6 months. In Waters' view, presence of air fluid level, radiopacity of sinus wall, or radiopacity of entire maxillary sinus were evaluated. The density, and sinus dimension changes were assessed using Adobe Photoshop CS5$^{(R)}$ (Adobe Systems Inc., San Jose, CA, USA). Results: Findings of Waters views in patients with clear maxillary sinus at preoperative time were followed by elevated sinus floor with transplanted bone, mucosal swelling, and air fluid level. At postoperative 3 months, and 6 months, the radiographic findings were similar to preoperative state. By contrast, patients with preoperative mucosal swelling, or haziness in sinus cavity showed radiopacity entire sinus in Waters' view. In cases of the patients who were treated with simultaneous treatment to mucosal swelling, good status of sinus cavity were found. Conclusion: Although Waters' projections provide the limited information, and is less sensitive method compared with computed tomography, it is simple, easy, and economical method to assess of maxillary sinus. We suggest using Waters' view as radiographic routine tool for evaluation of sinus condition, especially in the sinus elevation surgery.
Various biological approaches to the promotion of periodontal regeneration have been used. These can be divided into the use of growth and differentiation factors, application of extracellular matrix proteins and attachment factors and use of mediators of bone metabolism. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of enamel matrix protein and platelet-rich plasma on the treatment of intrabony defect, with bovine-derived bone powder in humans by digital subtraction radiography. 12 teeth(experimental I group) were treated with enamel matrix protein combined with bovine-derived bone powder and 12 teeth(experimental II group) were treated with platelet-rich plasma combined with bovine-derived bone powder. The change of bone density was assessed by digital subtraction radiography in this study. The change of mineral content was assessed in the method that two radiography were put into computer program to be overlapped and the previous image was subtracted by the later one. Both groups were statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon signed Ranks Test and Mann-whitney Test using SPSS program for windows(5% significance level). The results were as follows: 1. The radiolucency in 3 months after surgery was significantly increased than 1 month after surgery in both groups(experimental I and II groups)(p<0.05). 2. The radiopacity in 6 months after surgery was significantly increased than 3 months after surgery in both groups(experimental I and II groups) (p<0.05). 3. In experimental I group, there was no significant difference between 1 month and 6 months after surgery. 4. In experimental II group. the radiopacity in 6 months after surgery was significantly increased than 1 month after surgery(p<0.05). 5. There was no significant difference between experimental I and II group at 1 month and 3 months after surgery, but the radiopacity in experimental II group was significantly increased at 6 months after surgery(p<0.05). In conclusion, platelet-rich plasma can enhance bone density than enamel matrix protein until 6 months after surgery.

The author has observed a case of ossifying fibroma occured in the left mandibular body area of 19 years old woman. In the serial roentgenograms, the author has drawn following conclusions: 1. The lesion is circumscribed and demarcated from the surrounding bone tissues. 2. The cortical bone of the involved area was expanded and thinned markedly on the site. 3. The radiopacity was increased with more or less mottled appearance on the site.
The true cementoma (attached cementoma) is an unusual benign jaw neoplasm fused to the root of the involved tooth. The authors have treated a true cementoma occurs at the right mandibular first molar. The 26 years old male patient who has complained of sweeling and discomfort of the involved tooth. The radiograph showed that the tumor represents a dense radiopacity bordered by a well demarcated peripheral radiolucent zone. Treatment was performed by extraction of the involved tooth with complete enucleation of the tumor. So the operation was done without any complications.
Lameness of front limbs or hind limbs was occurred in German Shepherd dogs firm one brood bitch between 5 and 6 months of age. Physic81 examinations revealed pain associated with deep palpation of the affected area(u1nar, humerus, tibia, etc). But, no significant result was found for the clinical test including complete blood test and so oa Radiographic examination showed an increased radiopacity in the region of the nutrient foremen. Panosteitis was diagnosed on the basis of breed age, clinical signs and radiographic signs.
Objectives: A variety of root canal sealers were recently launched to the market. This study evaluated physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, and sealing ability of a newly launched resin-based sealer (Dia-Proseal, Diadent) compared to the existing root canal sealers (AHplus, Dentsply DeTrey and ADseal, Metabiomed). Materials and Methods: The physicochemical properties of the tested sealers including pH, solubility, dimensional change, and radiopacity were evaluated. Biocompatibility was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. For microleakage test, single-rooted teeth were instrumented, and obturated with gutta-percha and one of the sealers (n = 10). After immersion in 1% methylene blue solution for 2 weeks, the specimens were split longitudinally. Then, the maximum length of staining was measured. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey test (p = 0.05). Results: Dia-Proseal showed the highest pH value among the tested sealers (p < 0.05). ADseal showed higher dimensional change compared to AHplus and Dia-Proseal (p < 0.05). The solubility values of AHplus and Dia-Proseal were similar, whereas ADseal had the lowest solubility value (p < 0.05). The flow values of sealer in increasing order were AHplus, DiaProseal, and ADseal (p < 0.05). The radiopacity of AHplus was higher than those of ADseal and Dia-Proseal (p < 0.05). The cell viability of the tested materials was statistically similar throughout the experimental period. There were no significant differences in microleakage values among the tested samples. Conclusions: The present study indicates that Dia-Proseal has acceptable physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, and sealing ability.
