  • In this paper, solution based Indium Zinc Oxide thin film transistors (IZO TFTs) were fabricated with PVP gate dielectric. To enhance the electrical properties, UV-O3 treatment is proposed on solution based IZO TFTs. The gate leakage current and interface trap density is compatible with conventional ZnO-based TFT with inorganic gate insulator. Especially, the UV-treated device shows improved electrical characteristics compared to the untreated device. These results can be explained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, which shows that the oxygen vacancy of UV-O3 treatment is higher than that of no treatment.

  • We investigate the narrow emission-line ratios of 64 radio-loud (log $L_{1.4GHz}$ > 40) AGNs available in the SDSS archive, in order to examine whether there is a systematic difference in the accretion disk condition of radio-loud AGNs compared to radio-quiet AGNs and compact young radio-loud AGNs. The fluxes of narrow-emission lines, [O II], [Ne III], [O III], [O I], [Ar III], are measured for diagnostics. Based on the [O I]/[O III] and [Ar III]/[O III] ratios with photoionization models, we constrain the states of the accretion disk. We will present the results of the emission-line diagnostics.

  • Spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks allows secondary users to sense the unused spectrum without causing interference to primary users. Cognitive radio requires more accurate sensing results from unused portions of the spectrum. Accurate spectrum sensing techniques can reduce the probability of false alarms and misdetection. In this paper, a two-stage spectrum sensing scheme is proposed for cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. In the first stage, spectrum sensing is executed for each secondary user using energy detection based on double adaptive thresholds to determine the spectrum condition. If the energy value lies between two thresholds, a fuzzy logic scheme is applied to determine the channel conditions more accurately. In the second stage, a fusion center combines the results of each secondary user and uses a fuzzy logic scheme for combining all decisions. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides increased sensing accuracy by about 20% in some cases.

  • Microwave imaging (MI) is one of the most promising and attractive new techniques for earlier breast cancer detection. Microwave tomography (MT) realizes configuration of a multistatic multiple-input multiple-output system and reconstructs dielectric properties of the breast by solving a nonlinear inversion scattering problem. In this paper, we describe ETRI 3D MT system with 3D MI reconstruction program and demonstrate its robustness through some examples of the image reconstruction.

  • [1] There are systematical errors associated with ionospheric influence in retrieving key atmospheric parameters from radio occultation (RO) soundings. In order to obtain better-quality retrievals, we develop a new method, hereafter called National Central University Radio Occultation (NCURO) scheme, to reduce the ionospheric influence. The excess phase is divided into two parts, namely geometric excess length and path excess length (excess length along ray path due to refractivity effect). An excess phase equation is presented and implemented in the NCURO scheme Whose performance is evaluated through comparisons with model simulation and experimental data. The model simulation is based on the use of the ionospheric model 002001 and atmospheric model NRLMSISE-OO. Results show that the NCURO scheme significantly reduces the ionospheric influence at altitudes above 70 km as does the scheme presented in the literature, and provides better corrections for the atmospheric profile. • Cognitive radio (CR) MAC protocol provides access control of unused spectrum resources without causing interference to primary users. To achieve this goal, in this paper a TDMA based cooperative multi-channel cognitive radio MAC (MCR-MAC) protocol is proposed for wireless ad hoc networks to provide reliable protection for primary users by achieving cooperative detection of incumbent system signals around the communication pair. Each CR node maintains transmission opportunity schedules and a list of available channels that is employed in the neighbor discovery period. To avoid possible signal collision between incumbent systems and cognitive radio ad hoc users, we propose a simple but efficient emergency notification message exchanging mechanism between neighbor CR nodes with little overhead. Our simulation results show that the proposed MCR-MAC can greatly reduce interference with primary users and remarkably improve the network throughput.

  • Nowadays, an explosive increase of mobile devices has triggered a lot of research into radio resource management. Therefore, many studies have been done and still underway to use this limited resource efficiently. However, most of the existing studies focused on efficiency in mac layer. In this paper, I proposed a timer to manage radio resource, which refreshes the timer's values based on the number of connections dynamically. This dynamic timer enables Base Station (BS) to be able to manage available radio resources efficiently and accommodate much more Mobile Stations (MSs). Simulation result showed that BS with dynamic timer could accommodate the MS about 30% more, compared with BS with a static timer in terms of radio resource management. Dynamic timer is not restricted to any specific network standard. So its mechanism is practical and implementable without changing the original standard, which can contribute to service providers by increasing capability that BS can support.

  • The most critical function of the Communication Based Train Control system is wayside and on-board Radio communication. Radio communication must be safely made without errors. The standards for CBTC has not been established yet, and research on Radio communication systems for use in Train control systems adopting CBTC system such as the magnetic levitation train must continue. This paper will discuss the characteristics of Radio communication technology currently used domestically such as GSM-R, IEEE 802.11, TETRA, MESH, and WiMAX/WiBro, and will investigate the potential possibility of applying them to Train control systems.

  • We investigated the combined effect of fiber chromatic dispersion and self-phase modulation (SPM) in multi-channel subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) optical transmission systems. We theoretically analyzed the transmission characteristics of the SCM signals with the effect of SPM and chromatic dispersion in a single-mode optical fiber by numerical simulations based on the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The numerical simulation results revealed that the effect of fiber dispersion and SPM could occur independently between subcarrier channels in two-channel SCM systems for small optical modulation index (OMI) and large channel spacing. However, for large OMI, small channel spacing, and large fiber launching power, we found a performance degradation of the two-channel system compared to that of a single-channel system. These parameters are therefore important for the optimization of multi-channel SCM systems applicable to radio over fiber networks.

  • Rendezvous is a process of two or more cognitive radio nodes gathering on the same channel at the same time for a negotiation to establish data communications. This paper discusses rendezvous issues in cognitive radio networks. It details why rendezvous is an issue in cognitive radio networks and how rendezvous works. It classifies channel access methods, and details sequence-based channel-hopping methods. It surveys existing works on blind rendezvous and compares the proposed algorithms in terms of the maximum time to rendezvous. This paper discusses the properties that an efficient channel-hopping rendezvous algorithm should have and illustrates common issues in the existing rendezvous methods. It also explains open research issues in the rendezvous area.
