  • In multi-dimensional systems, various solution schemes for radiative transfer are suggested but the applicabilities and accuracies of these schemes have not yet fully tested due to the lack of reference solutions especially for nongray gases. In this paper we present some precise radiative transfer solutions for a black walled 3-dimensional cylindrical system filled with nongray gases having uniform temperature and concentration. The ray-tracing method with the $T_N$ quadrature set and the SNB model are used to obtain the radiative transfer solutions by the nongray gases. The solutions presented in this paper are proved to be quite accurate and can be regarded as the reference solutions for the radiative transfer by nongray gases.

  • The radiative heat transfer analysis in the fluidized particles layer has important application in many technological areas such as combustion chambers at high pressure and temperature, plasma generators for nuclear fusion, MHD generator using pulverized coal and the liquid droplet radiator used to reject wasted heat from a power plant operating in space. To accurately model the radiation properties of the fluidized particles layer, it is necessary to know the radiation interchange factors of particles in each layer. But the solutions are usually not possible for the equations of radiative heat transfer because it has an inherent difficulty in treating the governing intergo- differential equations, which are derived from the remote effects of radiative heat transfer. In this study, the analysis uses the Monte Carlo simulation method with optical depth model to calculate the radiation interchange factors of particles in each layer with wall and with each other.

  • The purpose of present study is to evaluate both the radiative heat loss from a flame and the local formation and oxidation rate of soot. The present paper describes a comprehensive mathematical model to deal with combustion and radiative heat transfer simultaneously. The involved radiative heat transfer model was based on the "heat ray tracing method" originally proposed by Hayasaka et al.. Some predicted results were compared with the experiments.periments.

  • A plane-parallel model of the diffuse Galactic light (DGL) is calculated assuming exponential disks of interstellar dust and OB stars, by solving exactly the radiative transfer equation using an iterative method. We perform a radiative transfer calculation for a model with generally accepted scale heights of stellar and dust distribution and compare the results with those of van de Hulst & de Jong for a constant slab model. We also find that the intensity extrapolated to zero dust optical depth has a negative value, against to the usual expectation.

  • Radiative transfer in energy systems such as furnaces, combustors, boilers and high temperature machineries is a significant mode of heat transfer. Although there are many solution schemes suggested for analysis of radiative transfer in multi-dimensional systems, the applicabilities and accuracies of these schemes have not fully tested for nongray gases. Especially reference data for enclosures of non-orthogonal shapes are not yet enough. In this paper we present some precise radiative transfer solutions for a black walled 3-dimensional cylindrical system filled with nongray gases. The SNB(statistical narrow band) model and the ray-tracing method with the T$_{N}$ quadrature set are used for finding nongray solutions. Although the solution method used in this study is not suitable for engineering purposes, the resulting solutions are proved to be quite accurate and can be regarded as the exact solutions and the results presented in this paper can be used in developing various solution schemes fur radiative transfer by real gas mixtures.s.

  • Radiative transfer by nongray gas mixtures with nonuniform concentration and temperature profiles is studied by using the statistical narrow-band model and the ray-tracing method with the sufficiently accurate T$\_$60/ quadrature set. Transmittances through the nonhomogeneous gas mixtures are calculated by using the Curtis-Godson approximation. Three different cases with different temperature and concentration profiles are considered profiles are considered to obtain benchmark solutions for the radiative transfer by nongray gas mixtures. The solutions obtained from this study are verified and found to be very well matched with the previous solutions for uniform gas mixtures. The results presented in this paper can be used as benchmark solutions in developing various solution methods for radiative transfer by nongray gas mixtures.

  • The Effects of radiative heat transfer on turbulent flow in a partitioned enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is partially divided by a thin, poorly conducting vertical divider projecting from the ceiling of the enclosure. The low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent flow field. The solutions to the radiative transfer equations are obtained by the discrete ordinates method(DOM). This method is based on control volume method and is compatible with the SIMPLER algorithm used to solve the momentum and energy equations. The effects of optical thickness and Planck number on the flow, temperature fields and heat transfer rates are investigated for a moderate Rayleigh number($=10^9$). The changes in buoyant flow fields and temperature distributions due to the variation of baffle length are also analyzed. From the predictions, radiant heat exchange between the baffle and the sidewalls strongly influences the temperature distribution in the baffle and its vicinity and total heat transfer increases as the optical thickness and the baffle length decrease. It is possible to neglect the radiative heat transfer effect when Planck number is over one.

  • In this work, we developed an accurate and efficient radiative finite volume method applicable for the complex 2D planar and 3D geometries using an unstructured-grid finite volume method. The present numerical model has fully been validated by several benchmark cases including the radiative heat transfer in quadrilateral enclosure with isothermal medium, tetrahedral enclosure, a three-dimensional idealized furnace, as well as convection-coupled radiative heat transfer in a square enclosure. The numerical results for all cases are well agreed with the previous results. Special emphasis is given to the parallelization of the unstructured-grid radiative FVM using the domain decomposition approach. Numerical results indicate that the present parallel unstructured-grid FVM has the good performance in terms of accuracy, geometric flexibility, and computational efficiency.

  • The effects of radiative heat transfer are investigated in a turbulent combustion flow field with highly non-adiabatic flames. Turbulent combustion is modeled by the $k-{\varepsilon}-g$ model and a one step irreversible reaction scheme for the combustion chemistry. The radiative trasport equation is solved by the finite volume method considering the radiative transfer from $CO_2,\;H_{2}O$ and soot only. Gray gas is assumed to calculate the radiative properties of $CO_2\;and\;H_2O$. A two-equation soot formation model is applied to predict soot volume faction distribution. All equations are solved in a coupled manner and the numerical results are compared with available experimental data.

  • A numerical study on swirling pulverized coal combustion in an axisymmetric enclosure is carried out by applying the 2-phase weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) approach with the discrete ordinate method (DOM) to model the radiative heat transfer equation. In the radiative transfer equation, the same polynomial equation and coefficients for weighting factors as those for gas are adopted for the coal/char particles as a function of partial pressure and particle temperature. The Eulerian balance equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species mass fractions are adopted with the standard and RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, whereas the Lagrangian approach is used for the particulate phase. The eddy-dissipation model is employed for the reaction rate for gaseous mixture, and the single-step and two-step first-order reaction model for the devolatilization process for coal. Special attention is given to establish the thermal boundary conditions on radiative transfer equation By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the radiation model used here is confirmed and found to provide an alternative for simulating the radiative transfer.
