  • The Discrete Ordinates Interpolation Method (DOIM) is tested in three-dimensional enclosures. The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is solved for a linear source term and the DOIM is formulated for a gray medium. Several interpolation methods can be applied to the DOIM scheme. Among them, the interpolation method applicable to an unstructured grid system is discussed. In a regular hexahedron enclosure, radiative wall heat fluxes are calculated and compared with exact solutions. The enclosure has an absorbing, emitting and nonscattering medium and a constant temperature distribution. These results are obtained with varying optical depths (xD = 0.1, 1.0, 10.0). Also, the same calculations are performed in an irregular hexahedron enclosure. The DOIM is applied to an unstructured grid system as well as a structured grid system for the same regular hexahedron enclosure. They are compared with the exact solutions and the computational efficiencies are discussed. When compared with the analytic solutions, results of the DOIM are in good agreement for three-dimensional enclosures. Furthermore, the DOIM can be easily applied to the unstructured grid system, which proves the reliability and versatility of the DOIM.

  • Present study deals with combustion characteristics and performance of U type radiation tube burner with fin which combustion capacity is 30,000kcal/hr and the maximum capacity of supply fuel is $30Nm^{3}/hr$. Temperature difference of radiation tube is about $173^{\circ}C$ at 25% capacity and this show relatively small temperature difference for convenient type. Thermal efficiency is satisfactory as $72{\sim}81%$. Also, radiative efficiency of radiation tube is $52{\sim}73%$. The efficiency of heat exchanger is $27{\sim}37%$. Therefore, radiative efficiency is improved to $1{\sim}10%$ after installing fin.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of $CO_2$ on heat transfer from oxygen-enriched hydrogen flame. Experiments were performed on flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which was mounted on top of the furnace. Five different oxidizer compositions were prepared by replacing $N_2$ with $CO_2$. In a steady state, the total as well as radiative heat flux from the flame to the wall of furnace have been measured using a heat flux meter. Temperature distribution in furnace also has been measured and compared. By increasing $CO_2$ proportion in the oxidizer, the convection played a more significant role rather than radiation. Overall temperature in the furnace was seen to be decreased, while the total heat flux has increased.

  • The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened, it is divided by a vertical baffle projecting from ceiling. The solution procedure Includes the standard k- $\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM ) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The velocity vectors, streamlines, and isothermal lines are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer In the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire.

  • A numerical analysis was conducted to predict the heat transfer characteristics of a high-temperature, high heat flux solar receiver as the end-wall angle varied. The concentration ratio of the solar receiver ranges from 200 to 1000 and the concentrated heat is required to be transported to a certain distance for specific applications. This study deals with a solar receiver incorporating high-temperature sodium heat pipe as well as a typical one that employs a molten-salt circulation loop with the same outer dimensions. The isothermal characteristics in the receiver section is of major concern. The diameter of the solar thermal receiver was 120 mm and the length was 400 mm. FLUENT, a commercial software, was employed to deal with the radiative heat transfer inside the receiver cavity and the convection heat transfer along the channels and heat pipes. The numerical results were compared and analyzed from the view point of heat transfer characteristics the solar receiver system.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of reburning on $NO_x$ reduction and also to examine heat transfer characteristics from LPG flame. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which was mounted at the bottom of the furnace. Tests were conducted using LPG gas as main fuel and also as reburn fuel. The effects of reburn fuel fraction and injecting location of reburn fuel are studied. The paper reports data on flue gas emissions, temperature distribution in furnace and various heat fluxes at the wall for a wide range of experimental conditions. In a steady state, the total as well as radiative heat flux from the flame to the wall of furnace has been measured using a heat flux meter. Temperature distribution and emission formation in furnace have been also measured and compared.

  • The aim of the present study was to improve the radiative heat dissipation of aluminum alloy, Al 1050. Resin/CuO coating and Cu/CuO composite plating were applied on aluminum alloy to improve the radiative heat dissipation. Resin/CuO coating was made using thermosetting silicon resin and Cu/CuO composite plating was made in pyrophosphate copper plating bath. Radiant heat flux($W/m^2$) was measured by self-produced radiant heat measurement device to compare each specimen. The cross section of specimen and chemical bonding of surface were analyzed by FE-SEM, XPS and FT-IR. As a result, radiant heat of Resin/CuO coating was higher than Cu/CuO composite plating due to the adhesion with aluminum plate and the difference in chemical bonding. But, Both of them were higher than aluminum alloy. In order to confirm the result of experiment, aluminum plate, Resin/CuO coating and Cu/CuO composite plating sample were applied LED and measured the LED temperature. As a result, LED temperature of samples were matched previous results and confirmed coated samples were lower about 10 degrees than the aluminum alloy.

  • Combined radiative-convective heat transfer in a hot gas tube flow has been investigated numerically and experimentally. In the numerical analysis, a standard k-.epsilon. model is used for the evaluation of turbulent shear stresses and spherical harmonics method with the Weighted Sum of Gray Gases Model for the solution of radiative transfer equation. In the experimental study measured are the velocity and temperature of the hot gas flow generated by the propane gas combustion, and tude wall heat flux distribution. Numerical results are compared with experimental ones and it is confirmed that P-3 provides quite reliable results in the analysis of the combined radiation-convection system.
