The single-scattering optical properties of ice crystals in cirrus clouds by the aircraft measurement data were investigated, and the radiative equilibrium temperatures and radiative fluxes were calculated and analyzed by radiative convective model with the variations of ice crystal habits and sizes in cirrus clouds. The homogeneous cloud is assumed to be in the layer 200~260 hPa with an ice crystal content of $10gm^{-2}$ for the flux calculation. The profiles of temperature, humidity, and ozone typical of mid-latitude summer are used. The surface albedo is assumed to be 0.2 for all spectral bands and the cosine of solar zenith angles is 0.5. The result of radiative equilibrium temperature at surface was less than surface temperature of the standard atmosphere data in case of smaller effective ice crystal size and larger optical thickness. The column, aggregation and plate in 6 ice crystal habits were the most effective in positive greenhouse effect and bullet-4 was the worst in it. At the surface, the maximum difference of equilibrium temperature by 6 kinds of ice crystal habits were about 3~15 K with 30 sample aircraft measurement data.

Despite the fact that UFAD(Under Floor Air Distribution) systems have many benefits and are being applied in the field in increasing numbers, there is a strong need for an improved fundamental understanding of several key performance features of these systems. This study numerically investigates the effect of supplied air temperature and supplied flow rate on the performance of UFAD, especially focused on thermal comfort. Also this study has compared UFAD with conventional overhead air distribution system. In contrast to the well-mixed room air conditions of the conventional overheat system, UFAD system produces an overall floor-to-ceiling airflow pattern that takes advantage of the natural buoyancy produced by heat sources in the occupied zone and more efficiently removes heat loads and contaminants from the space. Thermal comfort parameters were evaluated by CFD approach and then PMV was computed to detect the occupants' thermal sensation. Results show that radiative mean temperature plays crucial role on the evaluating PMV. Until now, the radiative temperature has been the missing link between CFD and thermal comfort, but the present study paves the way for overcoming this weakness.

The Effects of radiative heat transfer on turbulent flow in a partitioned enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is partially divided by a thin, poorly conducting vertical divider projecting from the ceiling of the enclosure. The low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent flow field. The solutions to the radiative transfer equations are obtained by the discrete ordinates method(DOM). This method is based on control volume method and is compatible with the SIMPLER algorithm used to solve the momentum and energy equations. The effects of optical thickness and Planck number on the flow, temperature fields and heat transfer rates are investigated for a moderate Rayleigh number($=10^9$). The changes in buoyant flow fields and temperature distributions due to the variation of baffle length are also analyzed. From the predictions, radiant heat exchange between the baffle and the sidewalls strongly influences the temperature distribution in the baffle and its vicinity and total heat transfer increases as the optical thickness and the baffle length decrease. It is possible to neglect the radiative heat transfer effect when Planck number is over one.

A numerical calculation was conducted to estimate and to elucidate the role of the radiative heat flux from metal particles(Al, $Al_2O_3$) on the dynamic extinction of solid propellant rocket where the rapid depressurization took place. Anon-linear flame modeling implemented by the residence time modeling for metalized propellant was adopted to evaluate conductive heat flux to the propellant surface. The radiative heat feed back was calculated with the aid of a modified comvustion-flow model as well. The calculation results with the propellant of AP:Al:CTPB=76:10:14 had revealed that the radiative heat flux is approximately 5~6% of total flux at the critical depressurization rate regardless of chamber geometry (open or confined chamber). It was also found that the dynamic extinction in open geometry could be predicted at the depressurization rate about 45% larger with radiative heat feedback than without radiation. Thus, it should be claimed that even a small amount of radiative flux 5~6% could produce a big error in predicting the critical depressurization rate of the metalized propellant combustion.
Three-dimensional distributions of longwave radiation flux for the April-September 1998 period are generated from radiative transfer calculations using the GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME) reanalysis temperature and humidity profiles and International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) cloudiness as inputs to understand the effect of cloud radiative forcing in the monsoon season. By subtracting the heating of the clear atmosphere from the cloudy radiative heating, cloud-induced atmospheric radiative heating has been obtained. Emphasis is placed on the impact of horizontal gradients of the cloud-generated radiative heating on the Asian monsoon. Cloud-induced heating exhibits its maximum heating areas within the Indian Ocean and minimum heating over the Tibetan Plateau, which establishes the north-south oriented differential heating gradient. Considering that the differential heating is a ultimate source generating the atmospheric circulation, the cloud-induced heating gradient established between the Indian Ocean and the Plateau can enhance the strength of the north-south Hadley-type monsoon circulation. Cooling at cloud top and warming at cloud bottom, which are the vertical distributions of cloud-induced heating, can exert on the monsoon circulation by altering the atmospheric stability.
Recently, the safety assessments with using the various evacuation programs are performed for improving the performance of fire and evacuation safety in the building. Generally, the evacuation programs can simulate the human behavior in fire situation by applying the variation of the movement speed and Fractional Effective Dose (FED) index in the smoke. However, if the simulation is performed without optional setting around the fire, the agents do not avoid the fire and they move through the fire. Therefore in this study, we define the radiative repulsion force which exists between the fire and the agents. Moreover, we modify the Helbing's movement model by adding the radiative repulsion force. As a result of the modified movement model, all agents move around the fire and they do not enter the upper bound area of radiative heat flux, $2.4kW/m^2$. From these results, we verified the reliability of the modified movement model.
Aerosol optical properties as well as vertical location of layer can alter the radiative balance of the Earth by reflecting and absorbing solar radiation. In this study, radiative transfer model (RTM) and satellite-based analysis have been used to quantify the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative effect of aerosol layers in the cloudy atmosphere of the northeast Asia. RTM simulation results show that the atmospheric warming effect of aerosols increases with their height in the presence of underlying cloud layer. This relationship is higher for stronger absorbing aerosols and higher surface albedo condition. Over study region ($20-50^{\circ}N$, $110-140^{\circ}E$) and aerosol event cases, it is possible to qualitatively identify absorbing aerosol effects in the presence of clouds by combining the UV Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) derived from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), cloud parameters derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS), with TOA Upward Shortwave Flux (USF) from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES). As the regional-mean radiative effect of aerosols, 6 - 26 % lower the USF between aerosols and cloud cover is taken into account. These results demonstrate the importance of estimation for the accurate quantification of aerosol's direct and indirect effect.

The ray effects of finite volume method (FVM) or discrete ordinate method (DOM) are known to show a non-physical oscillation in solution of radiative heat transfer on a boundary. This wiggling behavior is caused by the finite discretization of the continuous control angle. This article proposes a combined procedure of the Monte-Carlo and finite-volume method (CMCFVM) for solving radiative heat transfer in absorbing, emitting, and an-isotropically scattering medium with an isolated boundary heat source. To tackle the problem, which is especially pronounced in a medium with an isolated heat source, the CMCFVM is suggested here and successfully applied to a two-dimensional circular geometry.

Single liquid droplet combustion processes including heating, evaporation, droplet burning and flame radiation were theoretically investigated by adopting nongray gas radiation model for the radiative transfer equation (RTE). n-Heptane was chosen as a fuel and the numerical results were compared with the experimental data available in the literature. The discrete ordinate method (DOM) was employed to solve the radiative transfer equation and the weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) was applied to account for nongray effect by CO$_{2}$, and H$_{2}$0. Therefore, detailed effects by nongray gas and its comparison with the gray gas model could be figured out in the results. It is found that the radiative heat flux is higher when the nongray model is used, thereby reducing the maximum gas temperature and the flame thickness, but the total burning time increases due to the deceased conductive heat flux in nongray model. Consequently, a better agreement with experimental data could be obtained by using nongray model.
This study aimed to determine whether middle school students could understand global warming and the greenhouse effect, and explain them in terms of global radiative equilibrium. From July 13 to July 24 in 2021, 118 students in the third grade of middle school, who completed a class module on 'atmosphere and weather', participated in an online assessment consisting of multiple-choice and written answers on radiative equilibrium, the greenhouse effect, and global warming; 97 complete responses were obtained. After analysis, it was found that over half the students (61.9%) correctly described the meaning of radiative equilibrium; however, their explanations frequently contained prior knowledge or specific examples outside of the presented data. The majority of the students (92.8%) knew that the greenhouse effect occurs within Earth's atmosphere, but many (32.0%) thought of the greenhouse effect as a state in which the radiative equilibrium is broken. Less than half the students (47.4%) answered correctly that radiative equilibrium occurs on both Earth and the Moon. Most of the students (69.1%) understood that atmospheric re-radiation is the cause of the greenhouse effect, but few (39.2%) answered correctly that the amount of surface radiation emitted is greater than the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the Earth's surface. In addition, about half the students (49.5%) had a good understanding of the relationship between the increase in greenhouse gases and the absorption of atmospheric gases, and the resulting reradiation to the surface. However, when asked about greenhouse gases increases, their thoughts on surface emissions were very diverse; 14.4% said they increased, 9.3% said there was no change, 7.2% said they decreased, and 18.6% gave no response. Radiation equilibrium, the greenhouse effect, and global warming are a large semantic network connected by the balance and interaction of the Earth system. This can thus serve as a conceptual system for students to understand, apply, and interpret climate change caused by global warming. Therefore, with the current climate change crisis facing mankind, sophisticated program development and classroom experiences should be provided to encourage students to think scientifically and establish scientific concepts based on accurate understanding, with follow-up studies conducted to observe the effects.
