  • The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened right wall. The solution procedure includes the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In numerical study, SIMPLE algorithm is applied for fluid flow analysis, and the investigations of combustion gas induced by fire is performed by FAST model of HAZARD I program. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The streamlines, isothermal lines, average radiation intensity and kinetic energy are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer in the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire. And as the results of combustion gas analysis from FAST model, it is found that O2 concentration is decreased according to time. While CO and CO2 concentration are rapidly increased in the beginning(about 100sec), but slowly decreased from that time on.

  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the wall emissivities for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. In this study, a repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm which is a relatively recent heuristic search method is proposed as an effective method for improving the search efficiency for unknown parameters. To verify the performance of the proposed RPSO algorithm, it is compared with a basic particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGA) for the inverse radiation problem with estimating the wall emissivities in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. A finite-volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation of a direct problem to obtain measured temperatures.

  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the boundary emissivities for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. The finite-volume method is employed to solve the radiative transfer equation for a two-dimensional irregular geometry. A hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed for improving the efficiency of the genetic algorithm and reducing the effects of genetic parameters on the performance of the genetic algorithm. After verifying the performance of the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm, it is applied to inverse radiation analysis in estimating the wall emissivities in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. The effect of measurement errors on the estimation accuracy is examined.

  • Chebysheff-Halley methods are probably the best known cubically convergent iterative procedures for solving nonlinear equa-tions. These methods however require an evaluation of the second Frechet-derivative at each step which means a number of function eval-uations proportional to the cube of the dimension of the space. To re-duce the computational cost we replace the second Frechet derivative with a fixed bounded bilinear operator. Using the majorant method and Newton-Kantorovich type hypotheses we provide sufficient condi-tions for the convergence of our method to a locally unique solution of a nonlinear equation in Banach space. Our method is shown to be faster than Newton's method under the same computational cost. Finally we apply our results to solve nonlinear integral equations appearing in radiative transfer in connection with the problem of determination of the angular distribution of the radiant-flux emerging from a plane radiation field.

  • A hybrid genetic algorithm is developed for estimating the wall emissivities for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media in a two-dimensional irregular geometry with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries by minimizing an objective function, which is expressed by the sum of square errors between estimated and measured temperatures at only four data positions. The finite-volume method was employed to solve the radiative transfer equation for a two-dimensional irregular geometry. The results show that a developed hybrid genetic algorithms reduce the effect of genetic parameters on the performance of genetic algorithm and that the wall emissivities are estimated accurately without measurement errors.

  • Radiative heat transfer in an axisymmetric enclosure with absorbing, emitting, and scattering medium is studied here by using the different methods such as MDOM, FVM, and FVM2 with emphasis on the treatment of angular derivative term, which appears in a curvilinear coordinates due to angular redistribution. After final discretization equation for FVM2 is introduced by using the step scheme and directional weights, present approach is validated by applying it to three different benchmarking problems with absorbing, emitting, and scattering medium.

  • Theoretical calculations of the combined radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium equation including the charge-particle conservations have been earned out for a multilevel hydrogen atom in quiescent prominences. Cool and dense models show the steep changes of population and radiation field in the vicinity of the surface, while these physical quantities remain unchanged for models with temperature of 7,300K, regardless of total densities. Ionization rate of hydrogen atom related with metallic line formation varies in considerable amounts from the surface to the center of model prominences cooler than 6,300K. However, such cool models cannot release enough hydrogen line emissions to explain observed intensities. Prominence models with a temperature higher than 8,000K can yield the centrally reversed Lyman line profiles confirmed by satellite EUV observations. We find that queiscent prominence with a density between $2{\times}10^{11}$ and $10^{12}cm^{-3}$ should be in temperature range between 6,300K and 8,300K, in order to explain consistently observed H alpha, beta line emissions and $n_p/n_l$ ratio.

  • A diagnostic tool has been proposed to convert the observed surface distribution of hydrogen recombination line intensities into the radial distributions of the electron temperature and the density in HII regions. The observed line intensity is given by an integral of the volume emission coefficient along the line of sight, which comprises the Abel type integral equation for the volume emission coefficient. As the emission coefficient at a position is determined by the temperature and density of electrons at the position, the local emission coefficient resulted from the solution of the Abel equation gives the radial distribution of the temperature and the density. A test has been done on the feasibility of our diagnostic approach to probing of HII regions. From model calculations of an HII region of pure hydrogen, we have theoretically generated the observed surface brightness of hydrogen recombination line intensities and analyzed them by our diagnostic tool. The resulting temperatures and densities are then compared with the model values. For this case of uniform density, errors in the derived density are not large at all the positions. For the electron temperature, however, the largest errors appear at the central part of the HII region. The errors in the derived temperature decrease with the radial distance, and become negligible in the outer part of the model HII region.

For a given narrow band, focus is placed on proper modeling of gray gas absorption coefficients vs. temeprature relation used for any solution methods for the Radiative Transfer Equation(RTE). Comparison between the modeled emissivity and the "true" emissivity obtained from a high temperatue statistical narrow band parameters is made ofr the total spectrum as well as for a few typical narrow bands. Application of the model to nonuniform gas layers is also made. Low resolution spectral intensities at the boundary are obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temeprature profiles using the obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with 9 gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities as obtained by a narrow band model-based code with the Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Local heat source strength and total wall heat flux are also compared for the cases of Kim et al, which again gives promising agreement.

  • The extinction characteristics of low strain rate normal gravity (1-g) nonpremixed methane-air flames were studied numerically and experimentally. A time-dependent axisymmetric two-dimensional (2D) model considering buoyancy effects and radiative heat transfer was developed to capture the structure and extinction limits of 1-g flames. One-dimensional (1D) computations were also conducted to provide information on 0-g flames. A 3-step global reaction mechanism was used in both the 1D and 2D computations to predict the measured extinction limit and flame temperature. A specific maximum heat release rate was introduced to quantify the local flame strength and to elucidate the extinction mechanism. Overall fractional contribution by each term in the energy equation to the heat release was evaluated to investigate the multi-dimensional structure and radiative extinction of 1-g flames. Images of flames were taken for comparison with the model calculation undergoing extinction. The two-dimensional numerical model was validated by comparing flame temperature profiles and extinction limits with experiments and ID computation results. The 2D computations yielded insight into the extinction mode and flame structure of 1-g flames. Two combustion regimes depending on the extinction mode were identified. Lateral heat loss effects and multi-dimensional flame structure were also found. At low strain rates of 1-g flame ('Regime A'), the flame is extinguished from the weak outer flame edge, which is attributed to multi-dimensional flame structure and flow field. At high strain rates, ('Regime B'), the flame extinction initiates near the flame centerline due to an increased diluent concentration in reaction zone, which is the same as the extinction mode of 1D flame. These two extinction modes could be clearly explained with the specific maximum heat release rate.
