We utilized a 2-D PDR code developed by Lee et al. (2014) to explore the observed OH line fluxes toward embedded protostars. This 2-D PDR code combines self-consistently the FUV radiative transfer, gas-energetics, chemistry, and line radiative transfer. We modeled two sources, GSS30-IRS1 and Elias29, which show conspicuous line emission in the Herschel/PACS wavelength range. The physical and chemical structure for a given embedded source was derived by fitting the PACS CO line fluxes. After exploring various parameter spaces, we conclude that IR-pumping effect either by the central IR source and dust in-situ is insignificant for OH emission, unlike previous studies. We here present a possible solution for the observed OH fluxes, which require a high OH abundance and temperature at the inner-part of the UV heated cavity wall.

Heat trnasfer for absorbing and emitting media in laminar layer along the cylinders has been analyzed. Governing equation are transformed to local nonsimilarity equations by the dimensional analysis. The effects of the Stark number, Prandtl number, Optical radius and wall emissivity are mainly investigated. For the formal solution a numerical integration is performed and the results are compared with those obtained by P-1 and P-3 approximation. The results show that boundary layers consist of conduction-convection-radiation layer near the wall and convection-radiation layer far from the wall. As the Stark number of wall emissivity increases the local radiative heat flux is increased. The Pradtl number or curvature variations do not affect the radiative heat flux from the wall, but The Prandtl number or wall emissivity variations affect the conduction heat flux. Consequently the total heat flux from the wall are affected by the Prandtl number or wall emissivity variation.

The Combustion gas behavior induced by fire in a building is numerically investigated. The typical building for this analysis is partially divided by a vertical baffle projecting from the ceiling. The solution procedure includes the low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model for the turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. The effects of the location and size of fire source and baffle length on velocity and temperature distributions, species mass fraction and flame location are analyzed. As the results of this study, it is found that the case when the fire source is located at the vertical wall is more dangerous than at the bottom wall in view of the combustion products and flame location. It is also found that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire.
We investigate optical properties of amorphous alumina (Al2O3) dust grains in the envelopes around O-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars using laboratory measured optical data. We derive the optical constants of amorphous alumina over a wide wavelength range that satisfy the Kramers-Kronig relation and reproduce the laboratory data. Using the amorphous alumina and silicate dust, we compare the radiative transfer model results with the observed spectral energy distributions. Comparing the theoretical models with observations on various IR two-color diagrams for a large sample of O-rich AGB stars, we find that the amorphous alumina dust (about 10-40%) mixed with amorphous silicate better models the observed points for the O-rich AGB stars with thin dust envelopes.
In this study, a new technique for atmospheric transmittance estimated from ALOS PRISM data is developed. It is based on satellite's observing radiances of different view angles and assumes that the cause of difference in radiances is the different view angles. The ALOS PRISM has three independent optical systems for viewing forward and backward and producing a stereoscopic image along the satellite's track. This stereo pair data can be used to estimate the transmittance according to the radiative transfer theory. This derived transmittance will be validated by the AERONET data and compared with the MODTRAN4 simulation results. Results show that the higher the land cover albedo, the better the derived transmittance compared to the AERONET data. Besides, this technique also shows the transmittance retrieval will be underestimated for the low land cover albedo.
Microwave polarimetric backscattering from a various types of grassland canopies has been analyzed by using the first-order radiative transfer theory in this paper. Leaves in the grassland are modeled by rectangular resistive sheets, which sizes (widths and lengths) and orientations (elevation and azimuth angles) are randomly distributed. Surface roughness and soil moisture of the ground plane under the grass canopy is considered in this computation. The backscattering coefficients of grasslands are computed for different radar parameters (angles, frequencies and Polarizations) as well as different canopy Parameters (size and orientation distributions of leaves, canopy depth, moisture contents of leaves and soil, rms height and correlation length of soil surface). A radar system for 15GHz has been fabricated and used for measurement of the scattering coefficient from a grass canopy. The computation result obtained by the scattering model for the grass canopy is compared with the measurements.
We have solved the radiative transfer problem using a Sobolev approximation with an escape probability method in case of the supersonic expansion of a stellar envelope to an ambient medium. The radiation from the expanding envelope turns out to produce a P-Cygni type profile. In order to investigate the morphology of the theoretical P-Cygni type profile, we have treated $V_\infty,\;V_{sto},\;\beta$ (parameters for the velocity field), it and E(parameter for collisional effect) as model parameters. We have investigated that the velocity field and the mass loss rate affect the shapes of the P-Cygni type profiles most effectively. The secondarily important factors are $V_\infty,\;V_{sto}$. The collisional effect tends to make the total flux increased but not so much in magnitude. We have infered some physical parameters of 68 Cyg, HD24912, and $\xi$ persei such as $V_\infty,\;M$ from the model calculation, which shows a good agreenment with the observational results.
We present a Monte-Carlo simulation code, which solves the problem of dust-scattering in interstellar dust clouds with arbitrary light source distribution and dust density structure, and calculate the surface brightness distribution. The method is very flexible and can be applied to radiative transfer problems occurring not only in a single dust cloud, but also in extragalactic dust environment. We compare, for performance test, the result of Monte-Carlo simulation with the well-known analytic approximation for a spherically symmetric homogeneous cloud. We find that the Code approximation gives a very accurate result.
Two major radiative transfer (RT) techniques have been developted to model late-type galaxies: approximate RT and Monte Carlo (MC) RT. In the approximate RT, first proposed by Kylafis & Bahcall, only two terms of unscattered (direct) and single-scattered intensities are computed and higher-order multiple scattering components are approximated, saving computing time and cost compared to MC RT. However, the approximate RT can yield errors in regions where multiple scattering effect is significant. In order to examine how significant the errors of the approximate RT are, we compare results of the approximate RT with those of SKIRT, a state-of-the-art MC RT code, which is basically free from the approximation errors by fully incorporating all the multiple scattered intensities. In this study, we present quantitative errors in the approximate RT for late type galaxy models with various optical depths and inclination angles. We report that the approximate RT is not reliable if the central face-on optical depth is intermediate or high (${\tau}_V$ > 3).
Three dimensional numerical analysis for the turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the walking beam type of a reheat furnace in POSCO has been carried out by the industrial code FLUENT. Computations an based on the conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and species with the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and mixture fraction/PDF(Probability Density Function) approach for the combustion rate. Radiative heat transfer is computed by the discrete ordinates radiation model in combination with the weighted-sum-of-gray-gas model for the absorption coefficient of gas medium. The predicted temperture distribution in the reheat furnace and energy flow fractions are in reasonable agreement with the measurement data.
