  • It is important to test and evaluate the variation degree of ship-mounted antenna radiated power with respect to all directions in order to use more effectively antennas that installed on naval ships. The naval ship has various sensors for navigation, communication and electronic warfare, etc. And the performance of these sensors extremely depends on the various characteristics of antenna system to transmit and receive electromagnetic wave. The radiated power pattern of the antenna differs from all aspect angles of the ship because of complex superstructures. It is important to know the weak point(direction) of antenna radiation for appropriate operation. Therefore, the ARP(Antenna Radiation Pattern) of shipboard antennas is measured for the all aspect angles. The results of ARP measurement are utilized as reference for antenna arrangement of newly-built same class warship. This study also describes the development results for the ARP measurement technique, software design and test procedures to measure the radiation pattern of communication equipment antennas using the fixed test site.

  • Computer simulation results on the radiation pattern of an ultrasonic beam by the plurall arrangement of the transducers were reported by Sin (1979). This paper describes on the measurement of radiation pattern in case of one vibrox transducer and two vibrox transducers by varying the interval between the transducers. The measured results obtained are as follows; 1. Radiation wave of ultrasonic transducer is propagated to diffuse with spherical wave from center of transducer. 2. In case of one vibrox transducer, the greater the length of transducer, the sharper becomes the radiation pattern. 3. In case of two vibrox transducers, the maine lobe is revealed at the center of two transducers, it is shown difficult to make control freely of radiation pattern by varying merely the interval of transducers.

  • In this paper, the antenna radiation pattern inside the vehicle is presented for observing the change occurring in non-anechoic environment using monopole antenna. The environment for radio communication can be affected by antenna characteristic variation inside the small space existing multi reflection waves. To perform simulation and measurement about antenna radiation pattern, the radio frequency bands for GPS and Wibro services expected to use inside the vehicle is selected. The simulation is based on the ray-tracing method and the radiation pattern is measured inside the vehicle and in free space using monopole antenna having those frequency bands. In accordance with the measurement and simulation results, when two antennas are put inside the vehicle, the omni-directional characteristic of the antenna is maintained but the received power is increased than free space case and the difference between the each case of measurements is increased as the operating frequency is increased.

  • This paper describes the measured results of sonobuoy transmitting antenna system for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). Since radiation pattern and power density depend on impedance matching between transmitting RF part and antenna with termination resistance, design of matching circuit is very important for sonobuoy system performance. Matching circuit is designed by Smith chart using control of L and C. In standing wave ratio(SWR) measurement using Network Analyzer, SWR of antenna with matching circuit observed 1.5 below at the assigned VHF band. It shows very excellent performance comparison with conversional product that is used for the same object. The measured vertical and horizontal radiation patterns are also shown the satisfaction of military specifications. A drop out of sonobuoy system on the sea is happened when angle of elevation direction is over 10 degrees, and it is conformed that it takes less than I second return to original signal level. The required electric power density is $83\;mW/m^2$ in the military specification, and measured electric power density is observed over average $110\;mW/m^2$ at all frequency bands.

  • In this paper, new printed-type inverted F antenna is designed and fabricated to gain the ideal radiation pattern of a rocket-borne antenna which is expected to show the omni-directional pattern characteristic in rear direction. The radiation pattern of this antenna is measured in condition that the antenna is mounted on the side of the fin which is located on the tail of a rocket or a missile. Measurement result shows that the improved symmetrical radiation pattern is obtained with respect to the radiation pattern of the existing inverted F antenna. Besides parasite element which can be operated as reflector is attached in front of the antenna with the distance between the antenna and the parasite element $\lambda$/8. The result shows that the ratio of the front to the rear radiation level is improved by 8 dB.

  • Echo sounder and Doppler sonar are to theultra-sonic transducers for measuring the depth and the ship's speed respectively. To measure the depth and speed with a single transducer, it is required to control the ultra-sonic beam to optional direction. In the past, the direction of the transducer itself is varied, but such a method provoked much problems in the mechanical design of the equipment. This paper deals with the method to control beam direciton by the phase control of the plural arrangement of transducers, and the results are studied by a computer simulation. The remarkable results of the study is condensed as follows; 1. The greater the interval of arrangement between transducers, the sharper the radiation pattern is, but in this case, the level of undesired sidelobe is also increased. 2. The control of radiation pattern up to 60 degree can be achieved by an adequate arrangement of more than 10 transducers. 3. It is shown that a simultaneous measurement of both depth and speed can be achieved by alternating directivity of the pulse by the method proposed in this paper.

  • In this paper, the synthesis method of multibeam radiation pattern with multi-directional beams and nulls is proposed. Genetic algorithm is applied for the optimization of amplitude and phase of the feeding signal into each element that is structured in planar array of single patch antenna with an arbitrary field distribution. To verify the validity of the proposed method, $2{\times}2$ planar array antenna is used for the measurement and the measured far field radiation pattern is compared with the simulation result. As a result, the synthesis of multibeam radiation pattern is implemented by the optimization of amplitude and phase of the feeding signal into each element of $8{\times}8$ planar array antenna system.

  • A comparison of the antenna parameters for R-band (1.7-2.6 GHz) and S-band (2.6-3.95 GHz) standard gain horn antennas has been performed by the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), together with seven domestic participants from private companies and public institutions. Its purpose, as a proficiency test program of the 'Antenna Measurement Club' of KRISS, was to check equivalences in antenna parameter measurements between KRISS and the participants, particularly in the R-/S-band, to support antenna manufacturers and end users in Korea. The measurement parameters of this comparison are the power gain, radiation pattern, and reflection coefficient of the traveling standards for R-/S-band pyramidal standard gain horn antennas. The comparison used a gain comparison method and an extrapolation method to measure the power gain of the two traveling standards; the radiation patterns were measured in the far-field region of the transmitting and receiving antennas.

  • The object of this paper is to investigate the influence of antenna pattern on indoor radio channel characteristics. Different from previous works where this analysis was carried out at a fixed frequency using different antennas, in the present paper (where measurements were taken in a wide frequency range) the variation of the radiation pattern was caused by two factors: the change of the radiation pattern when the same antenna was used at different frequenicies and the use of different type of antennas. To carry out this analysis, frequency domain measurements of the indoor radio channel at 1 GHz, 5.5 GHz, 10 GHz and 18 GHz were collected. Measurements were taken using a network analyzer. Serveral re-alizations of the channel transfer function were obtained varying, for each measurement, the positon of the transmitter and keep-ing the receiver fixed. Estimate of the channel impulse response was obtained from the Inverse Fourier Transform (IFT) of the fre-quency response. The measurements were performed in an office enviroment with mostly metallic walls and inner separations. The obtained data were elaborated to obtain the power versus distance relationship, the Cummulative Distribution Functions(CDFs) of rms Delay Spread(DS) and of the 3 dB frequency correlation band-width. Finally, the 3 dB width of the frequency correlation func-tion has been empirically related to the inverse of the rms DS of the impulse response.
