An energy loss through the window system occupies about 10 to 30 percent on energy consumption of the whole building. That is the reason, several elements for a building composition of window system are the weakest from the heat. Insulation performance increases for the reducing heat loss. Heat transfer through the window system that is reducing heat transfer through conduction, convection and radiation. Insulation performance reinforcement methods classify improving heat specific quality of window system and improving efficiency of whole window system. The most application method among each methods is reducing emission ratio of the window system(Low-E glass), increasing a number of glazing(multiple window) and a method of vacuuming between glazing and glazing. Therefore this study is investigated a sort of glazing and specific character, U-value calculation with changing glazing thickness and calculation of temperature distribution and U-value with a glazing charging gas kind from double glazing. For a conclusion, an aspect of U-value figure at the smallest value case of vacuum glazing with Low-E coating. That means insulation efficiency is the best advantage during a building plan selecting vacuum glazing with Low-E coating for a energy saving aspect. In this way, U-value become different the number of glazing, coating whether or not and selecting injection gas. Therefore selecting of glazing is very important after due consideration by a characteristic and use of building and consideration of strong point and weak point.
Surface reaction occurs at a certain surface temperature when a catalyst is heated up in a reactive mixture. If homogeneous ignition does not occur, a steady state is observed because the heat produced by the surface reaction is balanced with the heat loss caused by convection, conduction and radiation. The present paper treats the effects of pressure on the surface temperature at the steady state. Hydrogen and oxygen are used as reactants and nitrogen as an inert gas. A spherical platinum catalyst of 1.5 mm in diameter is sustained in the chamber with two wires of 0.1 mm in diameter. As results, there exists a maximum steady temperature at a certain relative hydrogen concentration which increases with total pressure. At the steady state, it can be approximated that the heat release is estimated by the mass transfer considering the effect of natural convection. The experimental results are explained qualitatively by the approximation.
The neon liquefier by using GM cryocooler is designed and in process of manufacturing for the cooling of 100 hp high temperature superconductor (HTS) motor. It was used the principle of thermosyphon that the rotor of the motor is cooled by the latent heat of liquidized neon. The cold-box was designed to minimize heat loss by conduction, convection, radiation. Two heat exchanger were made to liquefy neon by the direct contact of neon gas on the cold head. As a first stage of our project, evaporation apparatus will be setup in the inner field of the cold-box and then the performance of neon liquefier will be test.
The purpose of this study is to analyze heating and cooling load variation due to envelope retrofits in an old school building. In a previous study, envelope retrofit of an old school building resulted in annual energy consumption reduction. However, cooling energy consumption increased with the envelope retrofit. This is because of high internal heat generation rates in school buildings and internal heat cannot escape through windows or walls when the envelope's thermal performance improves. To clarify this assumption, thermal performance changes due to envelope retrofits were analyzed by simulation. Results revealed indoor temperature and inner window surface temperature increased with high insulation level of windows. Indoor heat loss through windows by conduction, convection and radiation decreased and resulted in an increase of cooling load in an old school building. From results of this study, energy saving impact of envelope retrofits in an old school building may not be significant because of high internal heat gain level in school buildings. In case of replacing windows in school buildings, local climate and internal heat gain level should be considered.
An SHGC(Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) is a determinant of total flux of solar radiation coming indoor and a critical factor in evaluating heating and cooling load. U-value represents heat loss while SHGC denominates heat gain. Recently, windows with high solar gain, mid solar gain or low solar gain are being produced with the development of Low-E coating technology. This study evaluated changes in energy consumption for heating and cooling according to changes in SHGC when using double-layered Low-E glass and triple layered Low-E glass in relation to double layered clear glass as base glass. An Office was chosen for the evaluation. For deriving optical properties of each window, WINDOW 5 by LBNL, an U.S. based company. and the results were analyzed to evaluate performance of heat and cooling energy on anannual basis using ESP-r, an energy interpretation program. Compared to the energy consumption of the double layered clear glass, the double layered Low-E glass with high solar gain consumed $69.5kWh/m^2,yr$, 9% more than the double layered clear glass in cooling energy. The one with mid solar gain consumed $63.1kWh/m^2,yr$, 1% less than the base glass while the one with low solar gain consumed $57.6kWh/m^2,yr$, 10% less than the base glass. When it comes to tripled layered glass, the ones with high solar showed 2% of increase respectively while the one with mid solar gain and low solar gain resulted 5% and 11% in decrease in energy consumption due to low acquisition of solar radiation. With respect to cooling energy. it was found that the lower the SHGC. the less energy consumption becomes.
The monthly-average meteorological data, in particular, the monthly average daily terrestrial horizontal insolation are required for designing solar thermal energy systems. In this paper, the dynamic thermal performance of a flat plate solar collector system is numerically investigated through a year from the monthly average insolation data in Seoul. For a specified data set of solar collector system, the dynamic behaviors of total solar radiation on the tilted collector surfaces, heat loss from the collector system, useful energy and collector efficiency are analyzed from January to December by a mathematical simulation model. In addition, the monthly average daily total solar radiation, useful energy, and daily collector efficiencies through a year are estimated. The simulated results show that the average total radiation is highest in March and the useful energy is highest in October, while the total radiation and the collector efficiency are lowest in July.
Although fibrous insulations are generally used with resistive insulation type, metallic insulation is proper matter to satisfy low head-loss and equipment life when considering the specific condition, especially for Nuclear power plant. Common insulation is resistance insulation with a low thermal conductivity. but RMI is made of sheet plate with low emissivity and closed air space. Thermal radiation is blocked by stainless steel with low emissivity. Thermal conductivity and thermal convection are blocked by closed air space. This study shows the changes and effects of the heat loss according to shape and method of stacking sheet plates inserted into the insulation and analyzed the most optimized way for thermal insulation performance. The result shows that using sheet plate structure through raised and protruding shape processing was the appropriate model to optimize thermal performance. Additionally, insulating performance of RMI improved by placing the sheet plate in a high temperature region intensively.
In order to analyze the sensitivity on the pulverized coal flames of the several variables, a numerical study was conducted at the gasification process. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas lagrangian approach is used for the solid phase. Turbulence is modeled using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The turbulent combustion incorporates eddy dissipation model. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step two-reaction model was employed for the devolatilization of Kideco coal. In pulverized flame of long liftoff height, the initial turbulent intensity seriously affects the position of flame front. The radiation heat transfer and wall heat loss ratio distort the temperature distributions along the reactor wall, but do not influence the reactor performance such as coal conversion, residence time and flame front position. The primary/secondary momentum ratio affects the position of flame front, but the coal burnout is only slightly influenced. The momentum ratio is a variable only associated with the flame stabilization such as flame front position. The addition of steam in the reactor has a detrimental effect on all the aspects, particularly reactor temperature and coal burnout.
