It is generally believed that the high energy emissions from isolated pulsars are emitted from relativistic electrons/positrons accelerated in outer magnetospheric accelerators (outergaps) via a curvature radiation mechanism, which has a simple exponential cut-off spectrum. However, many gamma-ray pulsars detected by the Fermi LAT (Large Area Telescope) cannot be fitted by simple exponential cut-off spectrum, and instead a sub-exponential is more appropriate. It is proposed that the realistic outergaps are non-stationary, and that the observed spectrum is a superposition of different stationary states that are controlled by the currents injected from the inner and outer boundaries. The Vela and Geminga pulsars have the largest fluxes among all targets observed, which allows us to carry out very detailed phase-resolved spectral analysis. We have divided the Vela and Geminga pulsars into 19 (the off pulse of Vela was not included) and 33 phase bins, respectively. We find that most phase resolved spectra still cannot be fitted by a simple exponential spectrum: in fact, a sub-exponential spectrum is necessary. We conclude that non-stationary states exist even down to the very fine phase bins.
A small package of plasma instruments, Space Physics Sensor, will monitor the space environment and its effects on microelectronics in the low altitude region as it operates on board the KOMPSAT-1 from 1999 over the maximum of the solar cycle 23. The Space Physics Sensor (SPS) consists of two parts: the Ionospheric Measurement Sensor (IMS) and the High Energy Particle Detector (HEPD). IMS will make in situ Measurements of the thermal electron density and temperature, and is expected to provide a global map of the thermal electron characteristics and the variability according to the solar and geomagnetic activity in the high altitude ionosphere of the KOMPSAT-t orbit. HEPD will measure the fluxes of high energy protons and electrons, monitor the single event upsets caused by these energetic charged particles, and give the information of the total radiation dose received by the spacecraft. The continuous operation of these sensors, along with the ground measurements such as incoherent scatter radars, digital ionosondes and other spacecraft measurements, will enhance our understanding of this important region of practical use for the low earth orbit satellites.
This study investigates the characteristics of the Gross Moist Stability (GMS) over the tropics. The GMS summarizes the relationship between large-scale entropy forcing due to radiation and surface fluxes and the response of smaller-scale convection. The GMS is able to explain both to where moist entropy is advected by the atmospheric circulation and how deep the moisture flux convergence is in the tropical region. In the deep convective region, positive GMS appears over the warm pool region due to the strong column-integrated moisture convergence and the ensuing export of moist entropy to the environment. The vertical advection of moist entropy dominates over the horizontal advection in this region. Meanwhile, over the eastern tropical ITCZ region, which is characterized by shallow convective area, import of moist entropy by horizontal winds is dominant compared to the vertical moist entropy advection. Future changes in the GMS are also examined using the 22 CMIP5 model simulations. A decrease in the GMS appears widely across the tropics, but its increase occurs over the western-central equatorial Pacific. It is evident that the increased GMS region corresponds to an increased region of precipitation, implying that strengthened convection in the future due to increased entropy forcing exports the enhanced moist energy to stabilize the environment.
Handling the emergency problems such as Chemobyl accident require real time prediction of pollutants dispersion. One-point real time sounding at pollutant source and simple model including turbulent-radiation process are very important to predict dispersion at real time. The stability categories obtained by one-dimensional numerical model (including PBL dynamics and radiative process) are good agreement with observational data (Golder, 1972). Therefore, the meteorological parameters (thermal, moisture and momentum fluxes; sensible and latent heat; Monin-Obukhov length and bulk Richardson number; vertical diffusion coefficient and TKE; mixing height) calculated by this model will be useful to understand the structure of stable boundary layer and to handling the emergency problems such as dangerous gasses accident. Especially, this simple model has strong merit for practical dispersion models which require turbulence process but does not takes long time to real predictions. According to the results of this model, the urban area has stronger vertical dispersion and weaker horizontal dispersion than rural area during daytime in summer season. The maximum stability class of urban area and rural area are "A" and "B" at 14 LST, respectively. After 20 LST, both urban and rural area have weak vertical dispersion, but they have strong horizontal dispersion. Generally, the urban area have larger radius of horizontal dispersion than rural area. Considering the resolution and time consuming problems of three dimensional grid model, one-dimensional model with one-point real sounding have strong merit for practical dispersion model.al dispersion model.
Turbulent fluxes of sensible heat and latent heat were analyzed at King Sejong station in the austral summer of 2002 (December) and 2003 (January and February). Monthly mean air temperatures of January and February (2.2oC) were similar to those averaged over 1988 to 2001. Precipitation was less in January and greater in February than those averaged over last 14 years. In December of 2002 and January, there was precipitation primarily when easterly wind blew usually. The frequency of snowfall was equal to or larger than that of rainfall. In the mean while, precipitation primarily in forms of rainfall occurred with westerly wind in February. In addition, while for easterly wind, temperature and humidity was low, temperature and humidity were high in case of westerly wind. Based on flux footprint, measured flux mainly came from within 300 m with maximum of 40 m upwind, indicating the insignificant role of the sea around the study site. Half-hourly downward short wave radiation amounted up to ∼ 1000 Wm-2 and net radiation ranged from -50 to 600 Wm-2. Half-hourly sensible heat flux was positive at daytime with maximum of ∼ 400 Wm-2, except the 27th and 28th in February of 2003 when it was negative all day despite of positive net radiation at short daytime. Latent heat flux was positive with maximum of ∼ 130 Wm-2. Depending on wind direction, the partitioning of net radiation into the sum of sensible heat flux and latent heat flux was larger than 0.8, indicating the strong source of the land surface for the atmospheric heating. The daytime averaged Bowen ratio (=sensible heat flux /latent heat flux) was significantly greater than 1, indicating that sensible heat flux was the main source to heat the atmosphere over the site.

Due to climate change and urbanization, abnormally high temperatures and heat waves are expected to increase in urban and deteriorate thermal comfort. Planting of street trees and changing the albedo of urban surfaces are the strategies for mitigating the thermal environment of urban, and both of these strategies affect the exposure and blocking of radiative fluxes to pedestrians. After measuring the shortwave and longwave radiation according to the ground surface with different albedo and the presence of street trees using the CNR4 net radiometer, this study analyzed the relationship between this two strategies in terms of thermal environment mitigation by calculating the MRT(Mean Radiant Temperature) of each environment. As a result of comparing the difference between the downward shortwave radiation measured under the right tree and at the control, the shortwave radiation blocking effect of the tree increased as the downward shortwave radiation increased. During daytime hours (from 11 am to 3 pm), the MRT difference caused by the albedo difference(The albedo of the surfaces are 0.479 and 0.131, respectively.) on surfaces with no tree is approximately 3.58℃. When tree is present, the MRT difference caused by the albedo difference is approximately 0.49℃. In addition, in the case of the light-colored ground surface with high albedo, the surface temperature was low and the range of temperature change was lower than the surrounding surface with low albedo. This result shows that the urban thermal environment can be midigate through the planting of street trees, and that the ground surface with high albedo can be considered for short pedestrians. These results can be utilized in planning street and open space in urban by choosing surfaces with high albedo along with the shading effect of vegetation, considering the use by various users.
Intercomparison among the three radiative transfer models (RTMs) which have been used in the studies for COMS, was carried out on the condition of aerosol-laden atmospheres. Also the role of aerosols in the atmospheric radiation budget was analyzed. The results (hereafter referred to as H15) from Halthore et al.'s study (2005) were used as a benchmark to examine the models. Aerosol Radiative Forcing (ARF) values from the three RTMs, calculated under two conditions of Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT=0.08, 0.24), were systematically underestimated in comparison to H15 in the following shortwave components; 1) direct and diffuse irradiance at the surface, 2) diffuse upward fluxes at the surface and the top of the atmosphere, and 3) atmospheric absorbance. The ARF values for the direct and diffuse fluxes at the surface was $-10{\sim}-40Wm^{-2}$. The diffuse upward values became larger with increasing both AOT and Solar Zenith Angle (SZA). Diffuse upward/downward fluxes at the surface were more sensitive to the SZA than to the atmospheric type. The diffuse downward values increased with increasing AOT and decreasing SZA. The larger AOT led to surface cooling by exceeding the reduction of direct irradiance over the enhancement of diffuse one at the surface. The extinction of direct solar irradiance was due mainly to water vapor in tropical atmospheres, and to both ozone and water vapor in subarctic atmospheres. The effect of water vapor in the tropics was $3{\sim}4$ times larger than that of the ozone. The absorbance values from the three RTMs agree with those from H15 within ${\pm}10%$.

In this paper, the high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting/Noah-MultiParameterization (WRF/Noah-MP) modeling system is configured for the Cheongmicheon Farmland site in Korea (CFK), and its performance in land and atmospheric simulation is evaluated using the observed data at CFK during the 2014 special observation period (21 August-10 September). In order to explore the usefulness of turning on Noah-MP dynamic vegetation in midterm simulations of surface and atmospheric variables, two numerical experiments are conducted without dynamic vegetation and with dynamic vegetation (referred to as CTL and DVG experiments, respectively). The main results are as following. 1) CTL showed a tendency of overestimating daytime net shortwave radiation, thereby surface heat fluxes and Bowen ratio. The CTL experiment showed reasonable magnitudes and timing of air temperature at 2 m and 10 m; especially the small error in simulating minimum air temperature showed high potential for predicting frost and leaf wetness duration. The CTL experiment overestimated 10-m wind and precipitation, but the beginning and ending time of precipitation were well captured. 2) When the dynamic vegetation was turned on, the WRF/Noah-MP system showed more realistic values of leaf area index (LAI), net shortwave radiation, surface heat fluxes, Bowen ratio, air temperature, wind and precipitation. The DVG experiment, where LAI is a prognostic variable, produced larger LAI than CTL, and the larger LAI showed better agreement with the observed. The simulated Bowen ratio got closer to the observed ratio, indicating reasonable surface energy partition. The DVG experiment showed patterns similar to CTL, with differences for maximum air temperature. Both experiments showed faster rising of 10-m air temperature during the morning growth hours, presumably due to the rapid growth of daytime mixed layers in the Yonsei University (YSU) boundary layer scheme. The DVG experiment decreased errors in simulating 10-m wind and precipitation. 3) As horizontal resolution increases, the models did not show practical improvement in simulation performance for surface fluxes, air temperature, wind and precipitation, and required three-dimensional observation for more agricultural land spots as well as consistency in model topography and land cover data.
A thermal neutron beam facility utilizing a typical tangential beam port for Neutron Capture Therapy was installed at the HANARO, 30 MW multi-purpose research reactor. Mixed beams with different physical characteristics and relative biological effectiveness would be emitted from the BNCT irradiation facility, so a quantitative analysis of each component of the mixed beams should be performed to determine the accurate delivered dose. Thus, various techniques were applied including the use of activation foils, TLDs and ionization chambers. All the dose measurements were perform ed with the water phantom filled with distilled water. The results of the measurement were compared with MCNP4B calculation. The thermal neutron fluxes were $1.02E9n/cm^2{\cdot}s\;and\;6.07E8n/cm^2{\cdot}s$ at 10 and 20 mm depth respectively, and the fast neutron dose rate was insignificant as 0.11 Gy/hr at 10 mm depth in water The gamma-ray dose rate was 5.10 Gy/hr at 20 mm depth in water Good agreement within 5%, has been obtained between the measured dose and the calculated dose using MCNP for neutron and gamma component and discrepancy with 14% for fast neutron flux Considering the difficulty of neutron detection, the current study support the reliability of these results and confirmed the suitability of the thermal neutron beam as a dosimetric data for BNCT clinical trials.

In this study, functional anion-exchange membranes have been prepared and characterized to improve the permeation fluxes of the anion and urea for peritoneum dialysis. They were prepared by UV and radiation graft polymerization methods. The separation-membrane prepared by UV graft polymerization showed the highest grafting degree when HEMA and VBTAC were mixed by 1:2 ratio. However, the grafting degree decreased slightly at compositions above the 1:2 ratio because of the disruption of UV penetration caused by build-up of homopolymer. In the case of photo-initiator, the grafting degree increased up to 0.2 wt%, above which it decreased to a small extent. For the two membranes prepared by radiation graft polymerization, the VBTAC/HEMA membrane showed 96% grafting degree for 6 h reaction time and the GMA membrane showed over 100% grafting degree for 2 h reaction time. Anion-exchange membranes were prepared with 113% grafting degree and with DEA and TEA exchange groups. The DEA membrane showed the conversion degree of 70% in 4 h reaction time while the TEA membrane showed 30% in 2 h reaction time. The prepared anion-exchange membranes were permeable to only anions and urea, but not cations.
