About 10 percent of quasars are known to exhibit deep broad absorption troughs blueward of prominent permitted emission lines, which are usually attributed to the existence of outflows slightly above he accretion disk around the supermassive black hole. Typical widths up to 0.2c of these absorption roughs indicate the velocity scales in which special relativistic effects may not be negligible. Under he assumption of the ubiquity of the broad absorption line region in quasars, the broad emission line flux will exhibit Thomson scattered components from these fast outflows. In this paper, we provide our Monte Carlo calculation of linear polarization of singly Thomson scattered line radiation with the careful considerations of special relativistic effects. The scattering region is approximated by a collection of rings that are moving outward with speeds ${\upsilon}=c{\beta}<0.2c$ near the equatorial plane, and the scattered line photons are collected according to its direction and wavelength in the observer's rest frame. We find that the significantly extended red tail appears in the scattered radiation. We also find that the linear degree of polarization of singly Thomson scattered line radiation is wavelength-dependent and hat there are significant differences in the linear degree of polarization from that computed from classical physics in the far red tail. We propose that the semi-forbidden broad emission line C III]1909 may be significantly contributed from Thomson scattering because this line has small resonance scattering optical depth in the broad absorption line region, which leads to distinct and significant polarized flux in this broad emission line.
The radiation shielding characteristic of neutron shielding material has been studied as the preliminary study in order to design cosmic-ray shielding material. Specially, Soft Magnetic Material, known to be effective in EMP and radiation shielding, has been investigated to check if the material would be applicable to cosmic-ray shielding. In this work, thermal neutron shielding experiment was conducted and the Monte Carlo N-Particle(MCNP) was applied to employ skymap.dat, which is cosmic-ray data embedded in MCNP. As a result, polyethylene, borated polyethylene, and carbon nano tube, containing carbon or hydrogen, have been found to be effective in reduction of neutron flux below 20 MeV (including thermal, epithermal, evaporation). In contrast, the materials composed of iron such as SS316 and Soft Magnetic Material show a good shielding performance in the cascade energy range (above 20 MeV). Since Soft Magnetic Material is consisting of 13% of boron, it can also decrease thermal neutron flux, so it is expected that it would show a significant reduction on the entire range of neutron energy if the Soft Magnetic Material is used with hydrogen and carbon, so called low Z material.

An innovative in-core neutron flux mapping system has been developed and applied successfully for service in a commercial pressurized water reactor. With the benefit of double indexing path selector (Dip $s^{ⓡ}$) mechanism, the reliability of the detector drive system has been improved five times higher than that of conventional systems, and the problems caused by the serious friction generated between the detector cable and guide tubing has been solved completely because the Dip $s^{ⓡ}$ architecture allows the detector guide tubings to have larger curvature and shorter length in nature. The simple and fast maintenance is particularly emphasized in the detector drive system to secure minimum radiation exposure to the maintenance personnel by optimizing the number of components and providing easy access to the components. The programmable logic controller based digital controller with Window $s^{ⓡ}$ based operator s console provides fully automated and user friendly operation and maintenance support means.
Surface heat budget of the Deukryang Bay from July 1, 1992 to September 12, 1993 is analyzed by us- ing the meteorological data (by Changhung Observatory and Mokpo Meteorological Station) and oceanogaphical data (by Research Center for Ocean Industrial Development. Pukyong National University). Each flux element at the sea surface which has annual variation Is derived with application of an aerodynamical bulk method and empirical formulae. The solar radiation Is the maximum In spring and sensible heat are the maximum in autumn and water. and minimum in summer The heat .storage rate is calclilated by using the rate of water temperature variation according to the depth. The oceanic transport heat is estimated as a residual. The net heat flux, the heat storage rate are positive In spring and summer, while they are negative in autumn and winter. The oceanic transport heat Is convergence In winter and divergence In the rest of seasons.
This study presents meteorological data integrity to improve environmental quality assessment in Yongdam catchment. The study examines both extreme ranges of meteorological data measurements and data reliability which include maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, dew point temperature, radiation, heat flux. There were some outliers and missing data from the measurements. In addition, the latent heat flux and sensible heat flux data were not reasonable and evapotranspiration data did not match at some points. The accuracy and consistency of data stored in a database for the study were secured from the data integrity. Users need to take caution when using meteorological data from the Yongdam catchment in the preparation of water resources planning, environmental impact assessment, and natural hazards analysis.
Traditionally, it is measured by using basin or empirical formula with meteorology data, while it does not represent the evaportransporation over a regional area. With the advent of improved remote sensing technology, it becomes feasible to assess the ET over a regional scale. Firstly, the IMAGINE ATCOR atmospheric module is used to preprocess for the MODIS imagery. Then MODIS satellite images which have been corrected by radiation and geometry in conjunction with the in-situ surface meteorological measurement are used to estimate the surface heat fluxes such as soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux. In addition, the correlation coefficient between the derived latent heat and the in-situ measurement is found to be over 0.76. In the future, we will continue to monitor the surface heat fluxes of paddy rice field in Chiayi area.
We probe the feasibility of high-frequency radio observations of very rapid flux variations in compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our study assumes observations at 230GHz with a small 6-meter class observatory, using the SNU Radio Astronomical Observatory (SRAO) as an example. We find that 33 radio-bright sources are observable with signal-to-noise ratios larger than ten. We derive statistical detection limits via exhaustive Monte Carlo simulations assuming (a) periodic, and (b) episodic flaring flux variations on time-scales as small as tens of minutes. We conclude that a wide range of flux variations is observable. This makes high-frequency radio observations-even with small observatories-a powerful probe of AGN intra-day variability; especially, those which complement observations at lower radio frequencies with larger observatories like the Korean VLBI Network (KVN).
The objective of the present work is to develop a precise instrument for measuring the thermal property of insulating material over a temperature range from 30 K to near room temperature by utilizing a cryocooler. The instrument consists of two thermal links, a test sample, heat sink, heat source and vacuum vessel. The cold head of the cryocooler as a heat sink is thermally anchored to the thermal link and used to bring the apparatus to a desired temperature in a vacuum chamber. An electric heater as a heat source is placed in the middle of test sample for generating uniform heat flux. The entire apparatus is covered by thermal shields and wrapped in multi-layer insulation to minimize thermal radiation in a vacuum chamber. For a supplied heat flux the temperature distribution in the insulating material is measured in steady and transient state. The thermal conductivity of insulating material is measured from temperature difference for a given heat flux. In addition, the specific heat of insulating material is obtained by solving one-dimensional heat diffusion equation.

Electrode erosion is indispensable for atmospheric plasma systems, as well as for switching devices, due to the high heat flux transferred from arc plasmas to contacts, but experimental and theoretical works have not identified the characteristic phenomena because of the complex physical processes. Our investigation is concerned with argon free-burning arcs with anode erosion at atmospheric pressure by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. We are also interested in the energy flux and temperature transferring to the anode with a simplified unified model of arcs and their electrodes. In order to determine two thermodynamic quantities such as temperature and pressure and flow characteristics we have modified Navier-Stokes equations to take into account radiation transport, electrical power input and the electromagnetic driving forces with the relevant Maxwell equations. From the simplified self-consistent solution the energy flux to the anode can be derived.

An experimental study on energy density distributions produced by dish solar concentrating system was performed to optimally design and rightly position a cavity receiver. This deemed also very useful to find and correct various errors associated with a concentrator. It is observed that the actual focal length is 2.17 m with a maximum energy density of 1.89 MW/$m^2$. By evaluating the position of flux centroid, it was found that there are errors within 2 cm from the target center. As a result of the percent power within radius, approximately 90% of the incident radiation is intercepted by about 0.06 m radius. The area concentration ratio normalized to 800 W/$m^2$ insolation and 90% mirror reflectivity was 347 suns. The total integrated power of 2467 W was measured under focal flux distributions, which corresponds to the intercept rate of 85.8%.
