Adaptive response induced by low dese .gamma.-ray irradiation in human cervical carcinoma cells was examined. Cells were exposured to low dose of .gamma.-ray irradiation in human cervical carcinoma cells was examined. Cells were exposured to low dose of .gamma.-ray (1-cGy) followed by high doses of r-ray irradiation (0,1,2,3,5,7 and 9Gy for chlnogenic assay or 1.5Gy for micronucleus assay) with various time intervals. Survival fractions of cells in both low dose-irradiated and unirrated groups were analyzed by clonogenic assay. Surviva fractions of low dose-irradiated in cell survival was maximum when low and high dose irradiation time interval was 4 hr. Frequencies of micronuclei which is an indicative of chromosome aberration were also enutained from survival fractions analyzed by clonogenic assay, maximum when low and high dose irradiation time interval was 4hr. Frequencies of micronuclei which is an indicative of chromosome aberration were also enumerated in both low dose-irradiated and unirradiated groups. In consiststent with the result obtained from survival fractions analyzed by clonogenic assay, maximum reduction in frquencies of micronuclei was observed when low dose radiation was given 4 hr prior to high response to subsequent high dose .gamma.-ray irradiation in human cervical carcinomal cells. Our data suggest that one of the possible mechanisms of adaptive response induced by low dose rediation is the increase in repair of DNA double strand breaks in low dose radiation-adapted cells.
This study compared the radiation transmission and image quality of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC), and carbon, which are common components of the compression plates currently used during breast imaging. In addition to measuring the transmitted dose and the intensity without the use of a compression paddle, the four different compression paddles were evaluated according to the material and thickness of each paddle. Radiation transmittance, maximum intensity, and plot profile type w ere all evaluated for each material, and for each factor evaluated the follow ing order w as noted, from best to w orst: carbon 4 mm, PMMA 3 mm, PMMA 4 mm, and PC 4 mm. It is necessary to study a variety of materials and thicknesses in order to find the optimal combination of material and thickness, because not only does the material have a large influence in reducing the radiation exposure during mammography, but the thickness of the compression plate also has a great influence.
Recently, due to the increased use of medical radiation, the radiation exposure of radiation workers should be considered as well as medical exposure of patients. And it is recommended to close the door during radiography. however, In this study, when the door was inevitably opened for radiography, the proposed method was to install the shield as a method of reducing the exposure dose. And its efficiency was analyzed. In simple chest radiography, the measurement point was changed according to the measurement location. Dose rate were measured 10 times for each condition using a dosimeter. And the average value was derived. Using this, the change of dose according to the opening and closing of the door and the installation of the shield was analyzed. Using this, we compared and analyzed the dose change according to the door opening and closing and the installation of the shield, and significance was verified through the SPSS ver. 24. Depending on whether the door was opened or closed, 11,215.35%, 159.0%, 101.9% increased in front of the door in the consol room, behind the wall and behind the lead glass. Depending on the installing of the shield, the 49.2%, 29.6%, 19.9%, 30.6% decrease in front of the door in the examination and consol room, behind the wall and lead glass. In addition, statistical analysis was showed that there were significant differences in both the results according to whether the door was opened or closed and shielding(p<.05). Close the door during radiography. However, when the door should be opened, it was confirmed that the dose rate were reduced by installing the shield. Therefore, to optimize radiation protection, it is recommended to install shields when opening the door.
The patient dose in advanced radiotherapy techniques is an important issue. These methods should be evaluated to reduce the dose in diagnostic imaging for radiotherapy. Especially, the Computed Tomography in radiotherapy has been used widely; hence the CT was evaluated for dose and image in this study. The evaluations for dose and image were done in equal condition due to compare the dose and image simultaneously. Furthermore, the possibility of dose and image evaluations by using the Monte Carlo simulation MCNPX was confirmed. We made the iterative reconstruction for low dose CT image to elevate image quality with Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization; MLEM. The system we developed is expected to be used not only to reduce the patient dose in radiotherapy, also to evaluate the overall factors of image modalities in industrial research.
In the present study, we determined reduction value of radiation on chest film by film method and made a reduction curves. The reduction radio in exposure to radiation was induced by comparative investigation of characteristic curves and reduction one. Basing on these result, we could reduce a radiation dose on body surface in 50% at the time of chest radiography, if 17.8mm aluminium or 0.87mm copper filter were used in addition to conventional filter at 140KV tube voltage. The present study further revealed that the additional use of the aluminium or copper filter at the time of high voltage radiography in chest facilitates to identify an image of some pathologic focus overlapping wist clavicle and ribs.
Application of X-ray irradiation of dried condiments was studied using commercially prepared dried garlic, onion and welsh onion flakes as model samples. Total load of aerobic microbes (TAM), color differences, and generation of off-flavor were quantified for samples individually irradiated with gamma rays, electrons, or X-rays. TAM load was decreased by irradiation in a dose-dependent manner. The three types of radiation did not differ in the extent of TAM reduction (P>0.05). The samples did not differ in color. Off-flavor was detected from 6 kGy-irradiated samples, regardless of radiation sources. The results indicated that X-ray irradiation could be used for irradiation of dried condiments with the same effects as gamma rays and an electron beam.
Although the development of radiation therapy techniques has made the treatment more precise, exposure by radiation is unavoidable beyond the treatment site. In this study, we wanted to evaluate the absorbed dose according to the thickness of the bolus on the opposite side of the treatment in radiation treatment for breast cancer and to analyze the effect of dose reduction. An experiment was conducted on Rando phantom using VMAT treatment methods. Five points of A, B, C, D, and E were selected for the breast opposite the treatment, and when the dosimeters of 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm were used. The highest absorbed dose at point D closest to the treatment point was measured and lowest at point B furthest from the treatment point. The mean absorbed dose was 8.61 cGy When the bolus is not used and 8.10, 7.94, 8.06, and 8.10 cGy Depending on the thickness of the bolus. In this study, bolus was intended to be used to analyze the dose-reducing effects of breasts on the other side of the treatment. The results of the study showed the effect of dose reduction and the appropriate bolus thickness should be set up to reduce the dose in normal tissues.
Background: One of the most urgent issues following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) was the remediation of the land, in particular, for residential area contaminated by the radioactive materials discharged. In this study, the effect of decontamination on reduction of ambient dose equivalent outdoors and indoors was evaluated. The latter is essential for residents as most individuals spend a large portion of their time indoors. Materials and Methods: From December 2012 to November 2014, thirty-seven Japanese single-family detached wooden houses were investigated before and after decontamination in evacuation zones. Outdoor and indoor dose measurements (n = 84 and 114, respectively) were collected based on in situ measurements using the NaI (Tl) scintillation surveymeter. Results and Discussion: The outdoor ambient dose equivalents [$H^*(10)_{out}$] ranged from 0.61 to $3.71{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$ and from 0.23 to $1.32{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$ before and after decontamination, respectively. The indoor ambient dose equivalents [$H^*(10)_{in}$] ranged from 0.29 to $2.53{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$ and from 0.16 to $1.22{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$ before and after decontamination, respectively. The values of reduction efficiency (RE), defined as the ratio by which the radiation dose has been reduced via decontamination, were evaluated as $0.47{\pm}0.13$, $0.51{\pm}0.13$, and $0.58{\pm}0.08$ ($average{\pm}{\sigma}$) when $H^*(10)_{out}$ < $1.0{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$, $1.0{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$ < $H^*(10)_{out}$ < $2.0{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$, and $2.0{\mu}Sv\;h^{-1}$ < $H^*(10)_{out}$, respectively, indicating the values of RE increased as $H^*(10)_{out}$ increased. It was found that the values of RE were $0.53{\pm}0.12$ outdoors and $0.41{\pm}0.09$ indoors, respectively, indicating RE was larger outdoors than indoors. Conclusion: Indoor dose is essential as most individuals spend a large portion of their time indoors. The difference between outdoors and indoors should be considered carefully in order to estimate residents' exposure dose before their returning home.

Most of the spatial scattered dose caused by the scattered rays generated by the collision between the object and X-rays is relatively easily absorbed by the human body as electromagnetic waves in the low energy region, thereby increasing the degree of radiation exposure. Such spatial scattering dose is also used as an indicator of the degree of radiation exposure of radiation workers and patients, and there is a need for a method to reduce exposure by reducing the spatial scattered dose that occurs indirectly. Therefore, in this study, a lead-free radiation shielding sheet was proposed as a way to reduce the spatial scattering dose, and a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation was performed based on a chest X-ray examination. The absorbed dose was calculated and the measured value and the shielding rate were compared and evaluated.
This study was intended to evaluate the shielding rate of radiation shields manufactured using 3D printers that have recently been used in various fields by comparing them with existing shields made of lead, and to find out their applicability through experiments. A 3D printer shield made of tungsten filament 1 mm, 2 mm, 4 mm shield, RNS-TX (nanotungsten) 1.1 mm, lead 0.2 mmPb, and 1mmPb were exposed to 99mTc, 18F, and 201TI for 15, 30, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes after measuring cumulative dose three times. Based on this, the shielding rate of each shield was calculated based on the dose in the absence of the shield. In addition, 99mTc, 18F, and 201TI were located 100 cm away from the phantom in which the OSLD nano Dot device was inserted, and if there was no shield for 60 minutes, the dose of thyroid was measured using 1.0 mm of lead shield, 1.1 mm of RNS-TX shield, and 2 mm of tungsten shield made by 3D printer. The use of shields during radiation shielding emitted from open radiation sources all resulted in a reduction in dose. The radiation dose emitted from the radionuclides under the experiment was all reduced when the shield was used. This study has been confirmed that tungsten is a material that can replace lead due to its excellent performance and efficiency as shield, and that it even shows the possibility of manufacturing a customized shield using 3D printer.
