  • The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of a wireless transceiver that can be inserted into the ear canal. The wireless technology could minimize the cosmetic problems of patients, and it can be applied to binaural hearing aids for improving speech perception. In order to implement the ear canal insertable transceiver, simple finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations were carried out to determine the feasibility, and the hardware of the transceiver was implemented within the ear shell. The size of the implemented transceiver was only $7{\times}7mm$, and it could successfully transmit signals to external devices. In order to measure the radiation pattern, a simple RF phantom was used, and the maximum attenuation from the phantom was observed to be 23 dB when the reference antenna was placed at a distance of 2 m from the transmitter.

  • As satellite communications services are showing gradual growth, so are the needs for dual or tri-band antennas greater than performance of conventional single-band antennas. In this paper, a simultaneously operable tri-band antenna for SATCOM(Satellite Communications) is proposed. It is different from conventional methods of implementing tri-band through replaceable horns, while it is designed with a tri-band feed assembly composed of corrugated and dielectric horns and reflectors of gregorian type to transmit and receive tri-band of X, Ku and Ka band simultaneously. And simulated and measured values were compared and analyzed for characteristics of the proposed antenna. In the results, radiation patterns of the proposed tri-band antenna were close to the simulated ones and also met specifications.

  • For the purpose of development of polyurethane sealing material, polyurethane resins reinforced with CuO were prepared from polyol and MOAC(4,4'-Methylenebis(2-chlorobenzeneamine)). And the effects of compositions on the mechanical properties of the reinforced polyurethane resin were experimentally examined. The polyurethane resin got to be thermally decomposed at $260^{\circ}C$ and completely carbonized around $500^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the polyurethane resin increased with the content of MOCA. CuO was uniformly dispersed in the polyurethane resin by 1 minute's ultrasonic radiation. Tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the polyurethane resin reinforced with CuO increased with the content of CuO. Tensile strength and hardness of the reinforced polyurethane resin increased with particle size of the CuO, but elongation decreased. CuO showed higher tensile strength and hardness than any other additives, and lowest elongation.

  • Underwater acoustic materials are installed in order to reduce reflection, transmission and radiation of an underwater structure. The acoustic performance of the materials should be evaluated in accurately-controlled environment in terms of temperature and static pressure. In this paper, two pulse tubes, which are equipped with temperature and pressure controllers, are designed and developed to evaluate echo reduction(ER) and transmission loss(TL) of underwater acoustic materials. The procedures of the evaluation are suggested and the validation is carried out by comparing theoretical values to experimental results for a simple stainless steel specimen and free surface. In result, it is validated that developed pulse tubes are able to measure ER and TL with 2 dB tolerance.

  • Plants can recognize and respond in various ways to diverse environmental stresses, including pathogenic microorganisms, salt, drought, and low temperature. Salicylic acid (SA) is one phytohormone that plays important roles in the regulation of plant growth and development. Nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes 1 (NPR1) was originally identified as a core protein that could function as a transcriptional co-regulator and SA receptor during systemic acquired resistance (SAR), a plant immune response that could activate PR genes after pre-exposure of a pathogen. Although the function of NPR1 in plant defense response and the role of SA hormone in the regulation of plant physiological processes have been well characterized, the biological role of NPR1 in plant abiotic stress responses is largely unknown. In this review, we will summarize and discuss the current understanding of NPR1 function in response to plant environmental stresses.

  • Large spaceborne antennas should be lightweight, a factor related to the development costs of launch vehicles. In order to overcome this drawback, a feasibility study of a new carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) named M55J/RS3 is carried out for a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) reflector antenna. In particular, the high resolution of detected images is taken into consideration. To validate the electrical performance, a test of the CFRP specimen is fabricated, and the transmission/reflection coefficients are measured using a standard X-band waveguide. Finally, the effective complex permittivity and effective electrical conductivity are derived from the obtained measured data. By applying the derived conductivity to the simulation of the radiation pattern, antenna gain, and beamwidth-instead of relying on the assumption of a perfect electric conductor-variations in electrical performance are also investigated and discussed.

  • The safety-related raw water system's strong operational condition supports the radiation defense and biological shield of nuclear plant containment structures. Gaps and failures in maintaining proper working condition of main equipment like pump were among the most common causes of unavailability of safety related raw water systems. We integrated the advanced data analytics tools to evaluate the maintenance records of water systems and gave special consideration to deficiencies related to pump. We utilized maintenance data over a three-and-a-half-year period to produce metrics like MTBF, MTTF, MTTR, and failure rate. The visual analytic platform using tableau identified the efficacy of maintenance & deficiency in the safety raw water systems. When the number of water quality violation was compared to the other O&M deficiencies, it was discovered that water quality violations account for roughly 15% of the system's deficiencies. The pumps were substantial contributors to the deficit. Pump availability was predicted and optimized with real time data using response surface method. The prediction model was significant with r-squared value of 0.98. This prediction model can be used to predict forth coming pump failures in nuclear plant.

  • Glutathione (GSH) has important roles in cellular defense against oxidative stress, 1) direct scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and 2) coenzyme of ROS scavenging enzyme like glutathione peroxidases (GPx). GSH peroxidase reduces free hydrogen peroxide to water using 2GSH. $N$-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), one of the antioxidants, is used as a precursor for intracellular GSH. In this study, relation of GSH, NAC, and GSH peroxidase was investigated through transcriptional expression of $GPX1$ and $GPX2$, which are GSH peroxidase encoding genes, in yeast cells treated with 0 mM to 20 mM of NAC or in combination with 100 Gy gamma-rays. The transcriptional expression of $GPX1$ and $GPX2$ was induced by NAC and 100 Gy gamma-rays. The gene expression of both GSH peroxidases was decreased with increasing concentrations of NAC in irradiated yeast cells. These results suggest that elevation of intracellular GSH by NAC and oxidative stress and ROS generated from gamma-rays induces expression of GSH peroxidase genes, and that NAC can protect the yeast cells against ROS generated from gamma-rays through direct scavenging of ROS and transcriptional activation of GSH peroxidase.

  • In this paper, a wideband LC oscillator which is composed of a high voltage switch and a fat dipole antenna was designed and radiation characteristics are analyzed. A Marx generator was used as a high voltage pulse generator of the proposed wideband LC oscillator and $90^{\circ}$ corner reflector was used to obtain high directivity. According to simulated and measured results, 3 dB bandwidth of high voltage switch without fat dipole based on the received power is about 9%(${\lambda}_1=0.7\;m$) and bandwidth Is about 30%(${\lambda}_2=1\;m$) by using the LC oscillator containing high voltage switch and fat dipole. Consequently, fat dipole affects not only radiating power but also operating frequency and bandwidth of the LC oscillator. This study will be useful to determine operating frequency and radiating power when we design LC oscillator which uses a high voltage switch and a fat dipole.
