  • Numerical simulations on the onset and the growth of viscous fingering during the miscible displacement due to the radial source flow were conducted. With introduction of a new stability criterion, the critical log-viscosity ratio, Rc, was found as a function of the Peclet number, Pe. Similar to the previous linear stability analyses, Pe made the system unstable, i.e., accelerated the onset of instability. For a large Pe system, the present numerical simulation yielded much stable results than the previous theoretical predictions This discrepancy was commonly encountered in the comparison between the theoretical prediction and the experimental finding. Additionally, the difference between the rectilinear system and the present one was also discussed. The present system was found more insensitive to the Peclet number than the rectilinear one.

  • Brownian-dynamics simulation on highly charged colloidal suspensions is performed by employing Tokuyama effective force recently proposed. The radial distribution function suggests that there exist three novel phases, a gas phase, a liquid droplet phase, and a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal droplet phase, depending on the minimum values of that potential. The dynamics of droplet growth is also investigated both in liquid droplet phase and in crystal droplet phase. Thus, different types of characteristic growth stages are found.

  • Using the phytogram system, this study monitored hourly environmental factors(climate and soil), and radial growths and cambium activities of conifers in Worak mountain for 28 months from May 1996 to October 1998 to examine the influences of climatic factors on tree growths/carnbium activities of conifers in Worak Mountain, Korea. The phytogram system first puts a fine electrode into cambial zone. This device can automatically record environmental factors and cambium electrochemistry(hydration and proton levels). Dendrometers are attached to the phytogram for monitoring seasonal dynamics of cambial growth. We compared the results of radial growth by species and by diameter class. The growth decreased in order of Larix leptolepis, Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida. Pre-monsoon growths were fast and May-June moisture regime was the most critical for all species. In the middle of September, radial growths were finished. The proton level and stem diameter reached the minimum at 4 p.m. On the other hand, the hydration level reached the maximum at 4 p.m. This diurnal change resulted from transpiration and the release of water from phloem storage to sapwood through xylem stream.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanofibers on a metal substrate by an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was illustrated. Stainless steel plates were used for the catalytic metal substrate. The effects of radial distance and residence time of the substrate were investigated. The role of hydrocarbon composition in the fuel was also viewed. Nanofibers with a diameter range of 30-70 nm were found on the substrate. The carbon nanofibers were formed and grown in the region from 4 to 5.5 mm from the central axis of a flame outside of the visible flame front in the radial direction. The minimum residence time required for the formation of carbon nanofibers were about 20 seconds, and over 60 seconds were required for the full-scale growth. The characteristic time of the formation of carbon nanofibers was much shorter than that of the substrate temperature growth. In this study, the variation in hydrocarbon composition had no significant effect on the formation and growth of the carbon nanofibers.

  • Main concern is to figure out the growth response of Pinus densiflora to hydrologic conditions in the central Korea. Continuous measurements were carried out with six trees with dendrometers in the Chungbuk National University experimental forest (Wolak-san) during 1995~1996. Surrounding hydrological conditions reflected by the solar radiation, air temperature, precipitation, soil water were included in measurements. Their effects on the biological response of trees was investigated and expressed as response functions. With these response functions, tree growth model was developed. Soil water availability was more related to the tree growth than air temperature. Limited number of biological measurements with dendrometer could permit determination of dynamics of radial tree growth to the hydrological conditions. Tree growth model could be used to check and revise the statistical transfer function of dendrohydrology.

  • Relationship between annual ring width and physical properties of 24-year old alder woods (Alnus glutinosa L.) that had different seed origins from four provenances such as Bulgary, Italy, United Kindom, and Yugoslavia was investigated. No difference among different origins of seeds was found for the moisture content, density, and shrinkage or tangential radial (T/R) ratio. These properties had also no relationship with the growth rate. As important parameters among wood quality indices, no difference in the density or shrinkage on wood that has different growth rates was detected among alder woods from four different origins of seeds. Therefore, it is considered that higher growth rate might be a key factor for selecting the seed origin of the alder tree.

  • The growth of composite-structured Nd:$GdVO_4$ single crystal rods by the double die EFG method is reported. Two crucibles are combined with an outer and inner die for ascending of different melt. The composite-structured Nd:$GdVO_4$ single crystal rods with a length of 50 mm and an outer diameter of 5 mm including of inner Nd-doped core region with diameter 3 mm were grown successfully. Nd distribution in the, radial direction has graded profile from result of EPMA. Absorption coefficient in the core region at 808 nm was $42cm^{-1}$. Finally, we demonstrated the laser oscillation using our composite crystal and 2-W output was obtained.

  • Holomorphic mean Lipschitz space is defined in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$. The membership of the space is expressed in terms of the growth of radial derivatives, which reduced to a classical result of Hardy and Littlewood when n = 1. The membership is also expressed in terms of the growth of tangential derivatives when $n{\ge}2$.

  • The new approaches for silicon solar cell of new concept have been actively conducted. Especially, solar cells with wire array structured radial p-n junctions has attracted considerable attention due to the unique advantages of orthogonalizing the direction of light absorption and charge separation while allowing for improved light scattering and trapping. One-dimenstional semiconductor nano/micro structures should be fabricated for radial p-n junction solar cell. Most of silicon wire and/or pillar arrays have been fabricated by vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) growth because of its simple and cheap process. In the case of the VLS method has some weak points, that is, the incorporation of heavy metal catalysts into the growing silicon wire, the high temperature procedure. We have tried new approaches; one is electrochemical etching, the other is noble metal catalytic etching method to overcome those problems. In this talk, the silicon pillar formation will be characterized by investigating the parameters of the electrochemical etching process such as HF concentration ratio of electrolyte, current density, back contact material, temperature of the solution, and large pre-pattern size and pitch. In the noble metal catalytic etching processes, the effect of solution composition and thickness of metal catalyst on the etching rate and morphologies of silicon was investigated. Finally, radial p-n junction wire arrays were fabricated by spin on doping (phosphor), starting from chemical etched p-Si wire arrays. In/Ga eutectic metal was used for contact metal. The energy conversion efficiency of radial p-n junction solar cell is discussed.

  • We investigated the effect of Triton X-100 on the growth and morphology of Trichoderma koningii by comparing various parameters representing the frowth of mold in the presence or absence of Triton X-100. The specific growth rate and doubling time of T. koningii were not affected by the addition of 0.05% Triton X-100 in batch culture. However, in the presence of Triton X-100, cultures reached its stationary phase earlier and showed reduced level in total yield of biomass. The addition of Triton X-100 into solid medium also resulted in decrease in the colony radial growth rate and this response was correlated with the formation of mycelia which showed increase in branching and septation in the presence of Triton X-100.
