  • It is essential for the combined military weapon system to be equipped with interoperability for the efficient combat operation in the modern warfare environment. Since most of modern military systems utilize the electromagnetic wave for the radio communication in the network-centric warfare system, they can be vulnerable to the mutual interference among the adjacent combined military systems. In this paper, the typical radio communication systems are modeled with the modulation types of both spread and non-spread spectrum system. The various interference signals were generated for the simulation of the mutual interference influence from the adjacent radar and communication systems. The simulation results show that the detection performance of the victim communication receiver is seriously affected by the various interferences such as the types of modulation and the ratio of the overlapping bandwidth of the adjacent interferers. This result will be useful for defining the criteria of the interference protection in the combined military system for the interoperability in the future.

  • With the development of active phased array radar technology in recent years, active phased array antennas, which digitally combine signals received from subarray units using dozens of digital receiver, have been developed. The beam characteristics are greatly affected by the shape of the subarray structure as well as the weight of subarray in digital beamforming. So in this paper, the method to generate subarray structures by using recursive element exchanging method and the method to optimize subarray structures that can minimize sidelobes of operating beams are proposed. Additionally it presents the result to find the optimized subarray structure to minimize the maximum sidelobe of monopulse beam and pencil multi-beam respectively or simultaneously which are commonly used for digital beamforming by applying the algorithm propsed in this paper.

  • In this paper, we have designed a microwave level meter based on the FM-CW radar theory using a YIG-tuned oscillator (YTO). YTO has an excellent frequency linearity, so a linearizer circuit is not necessary for the level meter. It is shown that interference signals reflected from nearby obstacles can be removed by using a digital band-pass filter. An FIR band-pass filter is designed using the Kaiser window. The distance measurement has been performed in the outdoor test field. The measurement data have been obtained for the range of 1~40m with 1m step, and the results show that the standard deviation of the measured data is 2.33 cm. The level meter manufactured in this study can be applied usefully in the industrial facilities which are not accessible easily, for example, to measure the level of molten metal in the iron and steel company.

  • This paper presents a lateral collision risk index between an ego vehicle and a rear-side vehicle. The lateral collision risk is designed to represent a lateral collision risk and provide the appropriate threshold value of activation of the lateral collision management system such as the Blind Spot Detection(BSD). The lateral collision risk index is designed using the Time to Line Crossing(TLC) and the longitudinal collision index at the predicted TLC. TLC and the longitudinal collision index are calculated with the signals from the exterior sensor such as the radar equipped on the rear-side of a vehicle and a vision sensor which detects the distance and time to the lane departure. For the robust situation assessment, the perception of driving environment determining whether the road is straighten or curved should be determined. The relative motion estimation method has been proposed with the road information via the integrated estimator using the environment sensors and vehicle sensor. A lateral collision risk index was composed with the estimated relative motion considering the relative yaw angle. The performance of the proposed lateral collision risk index is investigated via computer simulations conducted using the vehicle dynamics software CARSIM and Matlab/Simulink.

  • A RF limiter is a component to protect the receiver front end from undesired signal. A RF limiter is a key component whose output is constant level for all inputs above a critical value. A RF limiter use a diode to pass signals of low power while attenuating those above some threshold. A RF limiter for receiver protection in modern radar systems is playing a vital role in order to meet challenges of new interference threats and complicated electromagnetic environments. This paper proposed a new circuit for high power RF limiter whose structure is the combination of the PIN diode and Limit diode. PIN diode take a use of its isolation characteristics which act as a switch does. A 2 kW RF limiter with 200 us pulse width at S-band was developed. It shows good agreements between estimated value and measured results.

  • It has been known that the DCMP(Directionally Constrained Minimization of Power) and the ZF(Zero Forcing) can improve the SINR performance of an array antenna system by using spatial signature of wireless channel. This paper analyzes the performance of DCMP and ZF in multiple scattering environments. To obtain the spatial signature of wireless channel. both DOA(Directional of Arrival) and AS(Angular spread) of the received signals were estimated by using ESPRIT. The performance of the DCMP and the ZF was analyzed theoretically. By computer simulation of SINR performance was evaluated.

  • It has well known that MUSIC and ESPRIT algorithms estimate angle of arrival(AOA) with high resolution by eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix which were obtained from the array antennas. However, the disadvantage of MUSIC and ESPRIT is that they are computationally ineffective, and then they are difficult to implement in real time. The other problem of MUSIC and ESRPIT is to require calibrated antennas with uniform features, and are sensitive to the manufacturing facult and other physical uncertainties. To overcome these disadvantages, several method using neural model have been study. For multiple signals, those require huge training data prior to AOA estimation. This paper proposes the algorithm for AOA estimation by interconnected hopfield neural model. Computer simulations show the validity of the proposed algorithm. The proposed method does not require huge training procedure and only assigns interconnected coefficients to the neural network prior to AOA estimation.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new wavelet-based image fusion algorithm, which has advantages in both frequency and spatial domains for signal analysis. The developed algorithm compares the ratio of SAR image signal to optical image signal and assigns the SAR image signal to the fused image if the ratio is larger than a predefined threshold value. If the ratio is smaller than the threshold value, the fused image signal is determined by a weighted sum of optical and SAR image signal. The fusion rules consider the ratio of SAR image signal to optical image signal, image gradient and local variance of each image signal. We evaluated the proposed algorithm using Ikonos and TerraSAR-X satellite images. The proposed method showed better performance than the conventional methods which take only relatively strong SAR image signals in the fused image, in terms of entropy, image clarity, spatial frequency and speckle index.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve DoA(direction of arrival) estimation performance of the subspace-based method by generating high robustness correlation matrix of the signals incident on the uniformly linear array antenna. The existing subspace-based DoA estimation method estimates the DoA by obtaining a correlation matrix and dividing it into a signal subspace and a noise subspace. However, the component of the correlation matrix obtained from the low SNR and small number of snapshots inaccurately estimates the signal subspace due to the noise component of the antenna, thereby degrading the DoA estimation performance. Therefore a robust correlation matrix is generated by arranging virtual signal vectors obtained from the existing correlation matrix in a sliding manner. As a result of simulation using MUSIC and ESPRIT, which are representative subspace-based methods,, the computational complexity increased by less than 2.5% compared to the existing correlation matrix, but both MUSIC and ESPRIT based on RMSE 1° showed superior DoA estimation performance with an SNR of 3dB or more.
