  • This study investigated the application of the successive correction method(SCM), a simple data assimilation method, for synthesizing the radar and rain gauge data. First, the number of iteration and influence radius for the SCM application were decided based on their sensitivity analysis. Also, for the evaluation of synthetic rainfall, the distributed rainfall field using the dense rainfall gauge network was assumed to be the true one. The synthetic rainfall field based on the SCM was also compared quantitatively with the one based on the co-Kriging frequently used nowadays. As the results, the SCM, a simple and economical data assimilation method, was found to secure the accuracy and statistical characteristics of the co-Kriging application.

  • Comparison between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM)/Precipitation Radar(PR) and the C-band doppler radar at Cheju, Kunsan and Pusan, operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), is conducted for validation of the surface precipitation structure, and for calibration of KMA radar instrument. Data used in validation was selected for seven rain events in the south region of about $36^{\circ}N$ and at TRMM overflight in Korea, during the summer season of 2000. Quantitatively comparing radar reflectivities from two different platforms that have different view angles, bandwidths and frequencies is a challenging task. For the comparison, the precipitation patterns are projected on the same area for TRMM PR. Through the comparison, it is realized that the reflectivity from ground-based radar is under estimated, compared to TRMM/PR observations. We discuss that is underestimation may be produced by many factors(system performance, topography, etc).

  • To combine the micro rain radar and microwave radiometer cloud liquid water, we estimate the cloud physical thickness from the difference between the MTSAT-1R cloud top height and cloud base height of visual observation of Daegwallyeong weather station, and the cloud liquid water path of micro rain radar is obtained by multiplying the liquid water content of micro rain radar and the estimated cloud physical thickness. The trend of microwave radiometer liquid water path agrees with that of the micro rain radar during small precipitation. We study these characteristics of micro rain radar and microwave radiometer for small precipitation to obtain the combined cloud water content of micro rain radar and microwave radiometer, constantly operated regardless to the rainfall.

  • The performance of radar Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks in hydrological applications depends on either the quality of data or the three-dimensional CAPPI structure from the weather radar. While radar data quality is controlled and enhanced by the more and more modern radar systems, the effect of CAPPI structure still has not yet fully investigated. In this study, three typical and important types of CAPPI structure including inverse-pyramid, cubic of grids 3x3, cubic of grids 4x4 are investigated to evaluate the effect of CAPPI structures on the performance of radar QPE using LSTM networks. The investigation results figure out that the cubic of grids 4x4 of CAPPI structure shows the best performance in rainfall estimation using the LSTM networks approach. This study give us the precious experiences in radar QPE works applying LSTM networks approach in particular and deep-learning approach in general.

  • In this study, the GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE retrievals for GPM) rainfall data was verified and evaluated using ground AWS (Automated Weather Station) and radar in order to investigate the availability of GPM IMERG rainfall data. The SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) was calculated based on the GPM IMERG data and also compared with the results obtained from the ground observation data for the Hoengseong Dam and Yongdam Dam areas. For the radar data, 1.5 km CAPPI rainfall data with a resolution of 10 km and 30 minutes was generated by applying the Z-R relationship ($Z=200R^{1.6}$) and used for accuracy verification. In order to calculate the SPI, PERSIANN_CDR and TRMM 3B42 were used for the period prior to the GPM IMERG data availability range. As a result of latency verification, it was confirmed that the performance is relatively higher than that of the early run mode in the late run mode. The GPM IMERG rainfall data has a high accuracy for 20 mm/h or more rainfall as a result of the comparison with the ground rainfall data. The analysis of the time scale of the SPI based on GPM IMERG and changes in normal annual precipitation adequately showed the effect of short term rainfall cases on local drought relief. In addition, the correlation coefficient and the determination coefficient were 0.83, 0.914, 0.689 and 0.835, respectively, between the SPI based GPM IMERG and the ground observation data. Therefore, it can be used as a predictive factor through the time series prediction model. We confirmed the hydrological utilization and the possibility of real time drought monitoring using SPI based on GPM IMERG rainfall, even though results presented in this study were limited to some rainfall cases.

  • In general, heavy rainfall in Korea is mostly associated with inflow of 850hPa low-level jet. It transports abundant heat and moisture flux to the Changma front. In this study, synoptic characteristics of heavy rainfall in Korea from a case study is examined by classifying heavy rainfall cases with synoptic patterns, in particular distribution of upper- and low-level jets, western North Pacific high, and moisture flux. The surface and upper-level weather charts including auxiliary analysis chart and radar and satellite images obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration, and 500hPa geopotential heights from NCEP/NCAR are used and then KLAPS is applied to understand the local atmospheric structure associated with heavy rainfall. Results show that maximum frequency in 60 heavy rainfall cases with more than 150mm/day appears in the Changma type of 43 cases (a proportion in relation to a whole is 52%) including the combined Changma types with typhoon and cyclone. As indicated in previous studies, most heavy rainfall cases are related to inflow of low-level jet. In addition, synoptic characteristics based on the analyses of weather charts, radar and satellite images, and KLAPS in heavy rainfall case of 12 July, 2009 reveal that the atmospheric vertical structure in particular equivalent potential temperature favorable for effective inflow of warm and moist southwesterly into the Changma front is linked to large potential instability and the strong convergence accompanied with low-level jet around Suwon contributes to atmospheric upsliding along the Changma front, producing heavy rainfall.

  • The characteristics and vertical structure of the rainfall are examined in terms of rain types using TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) PR (Precipitation Radar) data during the JJA period of 2002-2006 over three different regions; midlatitude region around the Korean Peninsula (EA1), subtropical East Asia (EA2), and tropical East Asia (EA3). The convective rain fraction in the EA1 region is 12.2%, which is smaller by 6% than those in the EA2 and EA3 regions. EA1 shows less frequent convective rain events, which are about 0.5 times as many as those in EA3. EA1 produces the mean convective rain rate of 10.4 mm/h that is about 40% larger than EA2 and EA3 while all regions have similar mean stratiform rain rate. The relationships between storm height and rain rate indicate that the rain rate is proportional to the storm height. Based on the vertical structure of radar reflectivity, EA1 produces deeper and stronger convective clouds with higher rain rate compared to the other regions. In EA3, radar reflectivity increases distinctly toward the land surface at altitude below 5 km, indicating more dominant coalescence-collision processes than the other regions. Furthermore, the bright band of stratiform rain clouds in EA3 is very distinct. In convective rain clouds, the first EOFs of radar reflectivity profiles are similar among the three regions, while the second EOFs are slightly different. The larger variability exists at upper layers for EA1 while it exits at lower levels for EA3.

  • Access to accurate spatial precipitation in many hydrological studies is necessary. Existence of many mountains with diverse topography in South Korea causes different spatial distribution of precipitation. Rain gauge stations show accurate precipitation information in points, but due to the limited use of rain gauge stations and the difficulty of accessing them, there is not enough accurate information in the whole area. Weather radars can provide an integrated precipitation information spatially. Despite this, weather radar data have some errors that can not provide accurate data, especially in heavy rainfall. In this study, some location-based variable like aspect, elevation, plan curvature, profile curvature, slope and distance from the sea which has most effect on rainfall was considered. Then Automatic Weather Station data was used for spatial training of variables in each event. According to this, K-fold cross-validation method was combined with Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System. Based on this, 80% of Automatic Weather Station data was used for training and validation of model and 20% was used for testing and evaluation of model. Finally, spatial distribution of precipitation for 1×1 km resolution in Gwangdeoksan radar station was estimates. The results showed a significant decrease in RMSE and an increase in correlation with the observed amount of precipitation.

  • One of main benefits of a dual polarization radar is improvement of quantitative rainfall estimation. In this paper, performance of two representative rainfall estimation methods for a dual polarization radar, JPOLE and CSU algorithms, have been compared by using data from a MOLIT S-band dual polarization radar. In addition, this paper presents evaluation of specific differential phase ($K_{dp}$) retrieval algorithm proposed by Lim et al. (2013). Current $K_{dp}$ retrieval methods are based on range filtering technique or regression analysis. However, these methods can result in underestimating peak $K_{dp}$ or negative values in convective regions, and fluctuated $K_{dp}$ in low rain rate regions. To resolve these problems, this study applied the $K_{dp}$ distribution method suggested by Lim et al. (2013) and evaluated by adopting new $K_{dp}$ to JPOLE and CSU algorithms. Data were obtained from the Mt. Biseul radar of MOLIT for two rainfall events in 2012. Results of evaluation showed improvement of the peak $K_{dp}$ and did not show fluctuation and negative $K_{dp}$ values. Also, in heavy rain (daily rainfall > 80 mm), accumulated daily rainfall using new $K_{dp}$ was closer to AWS observation data than that using legacy $K_{dp}$, but in light rain(daily rainfall < 80mm), improvement was insignificant, because $K_{dp}$ is used mostly in case of heavy rain rate of quantitative rainfall estimation algorithm.

  • Precipitation measurement with ground-based radar needs an information of the raindrop size distribution (RSD) characteristics. A 10-month dataset was collected in tropical Atlantic coastal zone of northeastern Brazil where the weather radar was installed. The number of drop was mainly recorded in 300 - 500 drop $mm^{-3}$, of which the maximum was registered around 1.1 mm drop diameter.
