The PIK3CA gene, oncogenic gene located on human chromosome 3q26.3, is an important regulator of cell proliferation, death, motility and invasion. To evaluate the role of PIK3CA gene in the risk of Korean lung cancer, genotypes of the PIK3CA polymorphisms (rs11709323, rs2699895, rs3729679, rs17849074 and rs1356413) were determined in 423 lung cancer patients and 443 normal controls. Statistical analyses revealed that the genotypes and haplotypes in the PIK3CA gene were not significantly associated with the risk of lung cancer in the Korean population, suggesting that these PIK3CA polymorphisms do not contribute to the genetic susceptibility to lung cancer in the Korean population.
Purpose : IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most commonly occurring form of chronic glomerulonephritis in pediatric cases. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes have been implicated in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The present study was conducted to investigate the association between 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the HLA-G gene and childhood IgAN. Methods : The authors analyzed and compared $HLA-G$ gene SNPs (rs1736936 and rs2735022) in 174 patients with childhood IgAN and in 438 healthy controls. In addition, IgAN patients were dichotomized and compared with respect to proteinuria (< and >$4mg/m^2/hour$), the presence or absence of podocyte foot process effacement, and the presence of pathologically early and advanced disease markers such as interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, or global sclerosis. Results : No significant SNP frequency differences were observed for the $HLA-G$ gene between IgAN patients and the control group. Moreover, no significantly associated SNP was observed with the presence of proteinuria, podocyte foot process effacement, or pathologically advanced markers. However, the haplotype, composed of rs1736936 and rs2735022, showed a significant association with the susceptibility to develop childhood IgAN (haplotype T/C: dominant model, $P$=0.049; haplotype C/T: recessive model, $P$=0.030). Conclusion : Our results indicate that rs1736936 and rs2735022 as the $HLA-G$ gene promoter haplotype might be associated with the susceptibility to develop childhood IgAN in the Korean population.

Wheat is rich in sources of fiber, oligosaccharides, and resistant starch, simple carbohydrates which may have a protective role against carcinoma. Additionally, Whole wheat/bran as well includes contains phytochemicals such as flavonoids, lignans, folate, phytosterols, phenolic acids, and tocols. The above phytochemicals suitable forms antioxidant and cholesterol-reducing activities. Phytoestrogens are regarded as especially essential in the preventative measures of hormonally dependent malignancies such as breast cancer (BC). In this study lowered BC risk has been associated with whole grain/bran consumption with an odds ratio (OR=0.24 and 95 %CI=0.10-0.56). Wheat/bran appears to have a reliable protective impact against BC. While intake of white bread has been associated with a high risk of BC (OR=2.63 and CI 95 %=1.07-6.48). Also, the E-Selectin (SELE) Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs5353 A/G and rs932307 C/T were investigated using the sanger sequences approach. There was a positive association between genotypes (rs5353 GG+AG) and (rs932307 TT+CT) with rate consumption of wheat-white/bread and these genotypes were more frequent in patients had BC in comparison with a significant difference (P=0.03) (P=0.01), respectively. The genotypes (GG+AG) frequency of the rs5353 polymorphism and (TT+CT) genotypes of the rs932307 polymorphism in the present study had a high risk of cancer with (OR=3.05), (OR=4.17) respectively. While these genotypes showed no significant association with the rate of whole grain consumption in patients and control. Therefore, the type of wheat may associate with increased incidence of disease-related with type of Polymorphism because some present genotypes of SNPs showed high (OR) which may refer to their positive associated with disease, the white wheat consumption may active the risky association between SNPs and BC.

This study was carried out to know the effect of mulching on growth and yield of Peucedanum japonicum. Time from sowing to germination was 8day at raising seedling(RS) and 40day at direct sowing(DS). The order of goodness in top part growth as follows : RS+white vinyl mulching (WVM), RS+black vinyl mulching (BVM), RS+no mulching(NM) and DS+NM. Tap root length at RS + NM was significantly shorter than those at the others. Tap root at the others was about same length. Tap root diameter was significantly larger at vinyl mulching than at no mulching and the thinnest at DS+NM. The number of supporting root at RS was more than DS as much as $4.7{\sim}7.1$. Rate of dried root weight to fresh weight was highest(30.5%) at DS+ NM and low at vinyl mulching. Dried root yield per 10a was 542kg at RS+WVM, 506kg at RS+BVM, 419kg at RS+NM and 357kg at DS. These results suggested that raising seedling and white vinyl mulching was good for culture of Peucedanum japonicum.
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Recent studies demonstrated that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs2293152 in signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and rs7574865 in signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (STAT4) are associated with chronic hepatitis B (CHB)-related HCC in the Chinese population. We hypothesized that these polymorphisms might be related to HCC susceptibility in Thai population as well. Study subjects were divided into 3 groups consisting of CHB-related HCC (n=192), CHB without HCC (n=200) and healthy controls (n=190). The studied SNPs were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The results showed that the distribution of different genotypes for both polymorphisms were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P>0.05). Our data demonstrated positive association of rs7574865 with HCC risk when compared to healthy controls under an additive model (GG versus TT: odds ratio (OR)=2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.06-4.03, P=0.033). This correlation remained significant under allelic and recessive models (OR=1.46, 95% CI=1.09-1.96, P=0.012 and OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.13-2.59, P=0.011, respectively). However, no significant association between rs2293152 and HCC development was observed. These data suggest that SNP rs7574865 in STAT4 might contribute to progression to HCC in the Thai population.

The objective of this study was to identify the applicability of AGNPS(Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution) model using RS data; Landsat TM merged by KOMPSAT EOC and GIS data. AGNPS model which is well-known distributed nonpoint source pollution model was used as the assessment tool. This model has the capability to adjust the level of pollutant load from farmstead and the fertilization level of upland field. A small agricultural watershed($4.12km^2$) which has 20 livestock farmhouses located in Gosan-myun, Ansung-gun was selected. AGNPS data were prepared by using Arc/Info, GRASS, ER-Mapper and Idrisi. Four storm events in 1999 were used for runoff calibration, and 2 storm events which were measured in hourly-base at 4 locations along the stream were used for water quality(TN, TP) calibration.
Effect of amylose content on the physical properties of resistant starches (RS) from autoclaved maize starches (with starch:water=1:3.5, at $121^{\circ}C$) which were repeated up to 4 times heating-cooling cycles, were investigated by water uptake, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Amylose content of waxy maize starch (Amioca), common maize starch (PFP), high amylose starch(Amaizo, Amylomaize VII) were 0%, 29%, 50%, and 72%, respectively. Yield of RS increased as amylose content increased. Water uptake of all kinds of native starch was higher than that of RS, but lower than that of autoclaved starch. By SEM, RS showed some small particles on surface but the size of particles was different with amylose content. Single endothermic transition peak exhibited at $40{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ in autoclaved Amioca and PFP (crystalline melting of amylopectin) and at $132{\sim}169^{\circ}C$ in autoclaved Amaizo and Amylomaize VII(crystalline melting of amylose) by DSC. RS from all kinds of autoclaved starches except Amioca showed single endothermic peak over $155^{\circ}C$ but the enthalpy was not related to amylose content.
Promoters inducible by paraquat, a superocide-generating agent, were isolated from Escherichia coli using a promoter-probing plasmid pRS415 with promoterless lacA gene. Twenty one promoters induced by paraquat were selected and further characterized. From sequence analysis, thirteen of the promoters were mapped to their specific loci on the Escherichia coli chromosome. Several promoters were mapped to the upstream of known genes such as usgl, katG, and mglB, whose relationships with superoxide response have not been previously reported. Other promoters were mapped to the upstream region of unknown open reading frames. Downstream of HC 96 promoter are uncharacterized ORFs whose sequences are homologous to ABC-transporter subunits. Downstream of HC84 promoter is an ORF encoding a transcriptional regulator-like protein, which contains a LysR family-specific HTH (helix-turn-helix) DNA bindign motif. We investigated whether these promoters belong to the soxRS regulon. All promoters except HC96 were found to belong to the soxRS regulon. The HC96 promoter was significantly induced by paraquat in the soxRS deletion mutant strain. The basal transcription level of three promoters (HE43, HC71, HD94) significantly increased at the stationary phase, implying that they are regulated by RpoS. However, paraquat inducibility of all promoters disappeared in the stationary phase, suggesting that SoxRS regulatory system is active only in rapidly growing cells.

Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), classified into three groups (group I, II, III), play a critical role in modulation of synaptic transmission at central and peripheral synapses. In the present study, extracellular field potential recording techniques were used to investigate effects of mGluR agonists on excitatory synaptic transmission at thalamic input synapses onto the lateral amygdala. The non-selective mGluR agonist t-ACPD ($100{\mu}M$) produced reversible, short-term depression, but the group III mGluR agonist L-AP4 ($50{\mu}M$) did not have any significant effects on amygdala synaptic transmission, suggesting that group I and/or II mGluRs are involved in the modulation by t-ACPD. The group I mGluR agonist DHPG ($100{\mu}M$) produced reversible inhibition as did t-ACPD. Unexpectedly, the group II mGluR agonist LCCG-1 ($10{\mu}M$) induced long-term as well as short-term depression. Thus, our data suggest that activation of group I or II mGluRs produces short-term, reversible depression of excitatory synaptic transmission at thalamic input synapses onto the lateral amygdala. Considering the long-term effect upon activation of group II mGluRs, lack of long-term effects upon activation of group I and II mGluRs may indicate a possible cross-talk among different groups of mGluRs.
Platelets are derived from fragments formed in the cytoplasm of bone marrow megakaryocytes. Platelet count (PLT) can be altered by factors such as platelet production, destruction, and inflammation. In a previous study, the significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) were reported by the genome-wide association study (GWAS) for PLT in Koreans. In this study, it was confirmed whether significant SNPs were replicated in the HEXA (The Health Examinees) cohort. As a result, the SNPs of the THPO (rs6141), BAK1 (rs210314, rs9296095), GGNBP1 (rs75080135), ACAD10 (rs6490294), and ABCC4 (rs4148441) were significantly correlated with PLT (P < 10-8). At the same time, it was confirmed that the direction of influence was the same according to the genotype. In conclusion, it can be seen that common SNPs are associated with the platelet count regardless of the cohort for Koreans.
