  • The wild Pyrus plants belong to the deciduous woody plants in Rosaceae family. Most are cultivated for fruit productions, but some for ornamental plants. There are 5 Pyrus species including Pyrus ussuriensis and 8 varieties cultivated in Korea. In Korea, these plants are populated near villages or on the hills, and they are easily propagated since their fruit are very Juicy and quite big In size. Plant breeding to get improved cultivars Is not difficult because the Pyrus plants are easy to cross breeding among its genus. Because not only this reason but there have been shown lots of variation in wild groups, the Pyrus plants inhabited In Korea are excellent deciduous woody plants and favorable fruit trees to develop ornamental plants. It is necessary to develop many kinds of fruit trees and ornamental trees containing genetically different character, so that it will be satisfied for many different people's taste and demands Collecting lots of wild plant resource with diverse genes is necessary for plant breeding.

  • Four ursane-type triterpenoids, ursolic acid (1), 23-hydroxyursolic acid (2), corosolic acid (3), and tormentic acid (4), and a phytosterol, ${\beta}-sitosterol-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$, were isolated from an EtOAcsoluble extract of the aerial parts of Potentilla discolor. The structures of 1-4 were identified by spectroscopic methods, particularly by extensive NMR studies. This is the first report on the isolation of compounds 1-4 from this plant.

  • The present paper describes the serum cholesterol level lowering effect of the underground parts of Rosa rugosa(Rosaceae) which have been used in a folkloric medicine for treating diabetics. The methanol extract was shown to lower the serum lipid level against the normal and 1% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid diet feeding to rats, respectively. When various fractions prepared from the above methanol extract was administered, the ethyl acetate-soluble fractions lowered the serum cholesterol level most remarkably. And when (+)-catechin from the ethyl acetate-soluble fractions was only administered to them, the serum cholesterol level was significantly lowered to 260$\pm$9.3mg/dl, the decrease of 17% for the control group. Therefore, it is suggested that (+)-catechin is one of the active principles of this plant.

  • As one of the botanical hot spots of the Korean peninsula, the vascular plant species in the areas of Taebaeksan, Hambaeksan, Geumdaebong(Peak) and Maebongsan were summarized as 694 taxa, 89 families, 302 genus, 579 species. 102 varieties and 13 forms. Based on the list of rare and endangered plants from the Forest Research Institute and the Ministry of Environment, 22 species were recorded in the studied areas: Thuja koraiensis(Cupressaceae), Arisaema heterophyllum(Araceae), Disporum ovale(Liliaceae), Tricyrtis dialata(Liliaceae), Lilium distichum(Liliaceae), Anemone koraiensis(Ranunculaceae), Rodgersia podophylla(Saxifragaceae), Rosa marretii(Rosaceae), Viola diamantica(Violaceae), Viola albida(Violaceae), Echinopanax horridum(Araliaceae), Acanthopanax chiisannensis(Araliaceae), Lysimachia coreana(Prinmulaceae), Syringa velutina var. kamibayashii, Halenia corniculata(Gentianaceae), Partrinia saniculaefolia(Valerianaceae), Adenophora grandiflora(Campanulaceae), Cacalia pseudo-taimingasa(Compositae) Iris odaesanensis(Iridaceae), Leontice microrhyncha(Berberidaceae), Rpdgersia tabularis(Saxifragaceae), and Acanthopanax sentico년(Araliaceae), Among them the four species were recorded from the list of the Ministry of Environment. As most of the species were recorded from the mountain-trails, the long-term habitat monitoring for the species is required .

  • The Illam district, situated in the extreme North Eastern part (Latitude 26.58N and 87.58E Longitude) of Nepal, is a hot spot for floral diversity. The study of wild edible plants of this region was an attempt to highlight the types of wild flowering plants found there and mode of use by the people of the Illam hills. In this respect, a survey of natural resources of some of the representative regions of the district was undertaken and more than 74 major varieties of plant species were found to be used frequently by the people of the hills. The rich diversity occurring in Dioscoriaceae, Moraceae, Rosaceae, Myrtaceae, Poaceae, Urticaceae and Arecaceae provided the wild angiospermic species commonly used by the people of the hills.

  • Three acidic triterpense were isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the fruits of Chenomeles sinensis (Rosaceae) together with previously reported oleanolic acid and ursolic acid by repeated silica gel colunm chromatography. Their structures have been elucidated as $2{\alpha},{\;}3{\betha}-dihydroxyolean-l2-en-28-oic$ acid(l. maslinic acid), $2{\alpha},{\;}3{\alpha},{\;}19{\alpha}-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic$ acid (2, euscaphic acid), and $2{\alpha},{\;}3{\betha}-dihydroxyolean-l2-en-28-oic$ acid (3,tormentic acid), respectively, on the basis of chemical and spectral evidence.
