  • This paper describes the development of a 6-axis robot's finger force/moment sensor, which measures forces Fx, Fy, Fz, and moments Mx, My, Mz simultaneously, for making a robot's gripper. In order to safely grasp and unknown object using the robot's gripper, it should measure the force in the gripping direction and the force in the gravity direction, and perform the force control using the measured forces. Thus, the robot's gripper should be composed of 6-axis robot's finger force/moment sensor that can measure forces Fx, Fy, Fz, and moments Mx, My, Mz simultaneously. In this paper, the 6-axis robot's finger force/moment sensor for measuring forces Fx, Fy, Fz, and moments Mx, My, Mz simultaneously was newly modeled using several parallel-plate beams, designed, and fabricated. The characteristic test of made sensor was performed. Also, Robot's gripper with the 6-axis robot's finger force/moment sensor for the characteristic test of force control was manufactured, and the characteristic test for grasping an unknown object was performed using it.

  • The fundamental research for the mobile robot navigation using the numerical optimization method is presented. We propose an image-based visual servo navigation algorithm for a wheeled mobile robot utilizing a ceiling mounted camera. For the image-based visual servoing, we define the composite image Jacobian which represents the relationship between the speed of wheels of a mobile robot and the robot's overall speed in the image plane. The rotational speed of wheels of a mobile robot can be directly related to the overall speed of a mobile robot in the image plane using the composite image Jacobian. We define the mobile robot navigation problem as an unconstrained optimization problem to minimize the cost function with the image error between the goal position and the position of a mobile robot. In order to avoid the obstacle, the modified cost function is proposed which is composed of the image error between the position of a mobile robot and the goal position and the distance between the position of a mobile robot and the position of the obstacle. The performance was evaluated using the simulation.

  • This paper deals with the path creation for stable action of a robot and transformation by using the fuzzy algorithm. Also, the obstacle detection and environmental analysis are performed by a stereo vision device. The robot decides the range and the height using the fuzzy algorithm. Therefore the robot can be adapted in topography through a transformation by itself. In this paper, the robot is designed to have two advantages. One is the fast movability in flat topography with the use of wheels. The other is the moving capability in uneven ground by walking. It has six leg forms for a stable walk. The wheels are fixed on the legs of the robot, so that various driving is possible. The height and the width of robot can be changed variously using four joints of each leg. The wheeled joint has extra DOF for a rotation of vertical axis. So the robot is able to rotate through 360 degrees. The robot has various sensors for checking the own state. The stable action of a robot is achieved by using sensors. We verified the result of research through an experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose a position estimation method of an entertainment robot in a performance stage. A position information is needed to produce contents of an entertainment robot performance. First, the performance stage is realized by a CD (cadmium sulfide) sensor matrix with a constant distance. Then the proposed position estimation uses ON/OFF information of a CD sensor in a performance stage. We confirmed that the position of the robot is detected with an maximum 4cm in position evaluation experiments. The robot was traveling to the final target position in the walking experiment with 75cm and 120cm path plan. Ultimately, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation is assessed by experimental results of a robot in performance stage. Also, in the proposed system installed by a robot performance contents, there is no necessity to mount a position estimation device on a robot; therefore an advantage of our system is that an entertainment robot commercialized by robot vendor can be utilized in our performance stage directly.

  • In a park or street, we can see many people jogging or walking with their dogs tracking their masters. In this study, an entertainment robot that imitates a dog's behavior is created. The robot's task is tracking a moving target that is recognized as the master. In order to design the robot, the ecological approach. in which the robot's goals and surroundings heavily influence its design, is used. A three-wheel type locomotion system is designed as the robot's physical structure which can follow a human jogging in outdoor space like a park. A sensor system which can detect the position of a master for the robot in the outdoor space, is developed. This sensor system consists of a signal transmitter which is at the hand of a master and some sensors which are mounted on the robot. The transmitter emits RF(radio frequency) and ultrasonic signals and the sensors detect the direction and distance from the robot to the transmitter by using the received signals. For the control architecture of the robot, a purely reactive behavior-based method is used in order to increase speed of response. The developed robot is evaluated through experiments conducted in indoor and outdoor environments.

  • This paper proposed the implementation of haptic-based robot which is following a human by using fundamental sensors on robot arms without additional sensors. Joints in the robot arms have several motors, and their angles can be read out by these motors when a human pushes or pulls the robot arms. So these arms can be used as haptic sensors. The implemented robot follows a human by interacting with robot arms and human hands, as a human follows a human by hands.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how children perceived the use of intelligent service robots in early childhood education and identifying the characteristics of the interaction between the children concerned and the robots. The subjects of this study were 49 kindergarten students from Girin Kindergarten in Gyeonggi-do. The results of this study suggested that the children personalized the robot and recognized it as their friend, regardless of their ages. In the interactions between the children and the robot, the children engaged in physical contact with the robot and occasionally tried to control its functions. In the child-robot interaction, the children searched their favorite functions and used them repeatedly, but also lost interest in those repeated functions. Regardless of their interest levels, however, the attendance or portfolio organization functions. With regard to the interaction between peers, there were frequent quarrels regarding the use of the robot at first, but these conflicts were resolved by the intervention of peers or teachers, and the children who were familiar with the use of the robot helped their friends; this was viewed as constituting cooperative behavior. Children usually used the robot with their friends. The robot was a medium for children to find new friends. Peer group activities were explored and new friendships were created as a result of the use of the robot.

  • Water running animals such as basilisk lizards have an advantage of high-speed movement and high power efficiency on water; so researchers in robotic fields have been interested in the water running locomotion. This paper presents prototype-design and experimental study on the fourand six-legged water running robot. Based on the previously proposed quadruped water running robot, we assemble a hexapedal water running robot. The legs of the water running robot are designed based on four-bar parallel link for repeated motion along to pre-defined path. Stability performance of the quadruped and hexapedal water running robot are investigated by experiments on rolling criterion. As a result, hexapedal robot performs better stability than quadruped robot. Based on the hexapedal robot design, we are planning to optimize the position of legs and operating frequency.
