Actual vegetation map drown with the scale 1 to 100 and Alnus japonica population in Ja-neup and Woong-neup of the Mujechi moor were described in order to monitor long-termly and preserve permanently, where is a very rare Molinietea moor and a legally protected area. A total of 3036 plots of 5m $\times$ 5m were surveyed during summer 1996. Thiessen polygons of 1491 alder trees were derived from the plot data. Actual vegetation map was illustrated by 6 cover types such as needle spike-rush type, moor-grass type, alder-moor type, eulalia type, oak forest type, and exposed site. Molinia grasses native to the moor and Miscanthus grasses alien to the moor are reciprocally dominant. The area of Molinia grasslands was rapidly in decline and alder population size was dramatically in increase in the moor, particularly in Woong-neup. In Molinietea moor preservation more attention should be focused on the regulation of a nutrient rich soil from forest road and fire.
A project has recently begun to reintroduce endangered Asiatic black bears to the Jirisan National Park. However, information on home range that is necessary to maintain the Minimum Viable Population (MVP) of those bears does not exist. Based on point data of two bears that were released for trial in Jirisan in 2001, we identified the movement pattern of bears and estimated their home ranges with two different methods Finally, the possibility of conserving the MVP of bears was evaluated by comparing the location and size of the home range with habitats which have been found to be suitable for bears. The frequency of bears' appearance reduced drastically as road densities of both paved roads and legal trails increased. The midpoint of home ranges of the two bears was 376.85 $km^2$ and 50.76 $km^2$ based on 100% MCP (Minimum Convex Polygon) and 95% AK (Adaptive Kernel Home Range Method), respectively, with an overlapped area of 126.0 $km^2$ and 3.99 $km^2$ each. The core areas of their home ranges are located not in the no-entry zone, where major trails were open to the public - despite being designated as no -entry zone - but in areas where most trails were closed to the public. A discrepancy between core areas of home ranges and potentially suitable habitats suggests the effects of vehicles and tracking people through roads within the park. Thus, for the success of in situ conservation of endangered bears, well-planned management of habitats is needed to protect bears and to ensure the home ranges to support the MVP.
When the natural villages in Jeju province are incorporated into the district of city planning, they are considered to be a small-scale residential districts. Therefore, a garden city should be planned that considers the characteristics of the villages to implement an appropriate street system, to use the area effectively, and to harmonize the villages with the surrounding communities. There have been an especially large number of problems with the street system in the city of Seogwipo, which was notified as the area of natural settlement. This study analyzes the problems inherent in street planning and the present condition of roads whose construction has been postponed for a long time due to several problems including an inappropriately planned street system. Based on the research of various documents, a practical street system has been investigated. Most of the residents in natural settlement units demand use of the continued the existing roads as well as the implementation of an effective street system. They ask for street planning under which the involved construction would take only a short period of time and would result in only minimal damage to their existing properties. Therefore, the street system should be planned so as to preserve the nature-friendly features of natural settlements, their surroundings and tourism resources. Even after streets hwve been planned and their completion you has been established, the plan should be continuously evaluated, analyzed and compared with other alternatives. The street plan should continuously incorporate improvement measures which would satisfy various aspects of the street system including land use, traffic demand, and future population demands. Both the amount of money to be invested and economical efficiency should be considered for street planning since the street system has a great impact on many industries. Unnecessary costs related to excessive road construction should be avoided. The street network plan should also include the complete evaluation of the natural topography as well as the surrounding. Considering these views, the data concerning the current condition of the city and the related investigation play an important role in establishing a street plan. However, the investigation of future construction plans by the city is as of yet at a very early stage. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the investigational study of the current city development plans. The street system for the natural settlement area should be established only after the thorough investigation of all aspects of street planning. In addition, the plan should be flexible enough to consider the characteristics of Jeju.

Crack sealing, a routine and necessary part of pavement maintenance, is a dangerous, costly, and labor-intensive operation. Within the North America, about ${\$}200$ million is spent annually on crack sealing, with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) spending about ${\$}7$ million annually (labor alone accounts for over 50 percent of these costs). Prompted by concerns of safety and cost, the University of Texas at Austin, in cooperation with TxDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has developed a unique computer-guided Automated Road Maintenance Machine (ARMM) for pavement crack sealing. In 1999, successful field tests have been undertaken in 8 States around the U.S. This paper first describes significance of the automated crack sealing and technical advances in automated crack sealers including the ARMM, developed in the U.S. It then discusses the ARMM's field implementation and performance evaluation results, and improvements and modifications suggested through the technology evaluation during the field trials. Current research efforts and future work plans in its further development are also presented in this paper.

Snow-melting system has been applied not only to roads for car traffic but also to pavement for the pedestrians safety reason in some of the developed countries such as USA and Canada based on countermeasures against Natural Disasters Act revised in 2000. Even though this system was introduced in korea in 2006 and has been partly applied to car traffic roads, there is few places that the system has been applied. Therefore, in this research a snow-melting system with a block-type to cover a pavement that efficiently transfers heat form heat rays to the top of a pavement and protects the heat rays. A quality check showed that compression and bending strength was improved approximately 5 times stronger and 7 to 10 times more absorption rate than the KS(Korea Industrial Standard) requirement. Moreover, only 10 minute was required to increase temperature above zero with a block-type snow-melting system whereas approximately 180 minute was spent with the existing system. This research is expected to contribute to environmental issues and reduce accidents on a slippery road.
This study was aimed at developing an application method of biotope evaluation indexes to secure bird diversity on urban biotope that has high intensity of land use. The main purpose of the study was to plan the effective restoration method of sound urban biotope from the ecological aspects after evaluating the relationship between the biotope evaluation indexes. The biotope area, number of insect species, distance from adjacent road, biotope area index were surveyed on each designated site in order to analyze the evaluation indexes that influenced bird diversity in urban biotope. The analysis of the relationship between biotope evaluation. indexes showed the following results number of bird species and number of insect species > number of bird species and biotope area index > number of insect species and biotope area index, that is, the number of insect species and biotope area index had a specific effect on the bird diversity. The equation derived from the above result is 'number of bird species = 6.124 $\times$ biotope area index + 0.095 $\times$ number. of insect species - 1.197' ($R^2=0.716$, F=27.743, P<0.001). Therefore, even a small area can be helpful for promoting bird diversity in the urban area if the biotope area index and diversity of vertical landscape for insects are maintained.

$^{210}Pb$ dating was conducted to examine the influence of land use changes in the forest catchment on lake sedimentation. The Kushiro River, into which Lake Takkobu drains under regular flow conditions, contributed to an increased sedimentation rate in sampling point at the lake outflow because turbid water from the Kushiro River flows back into Lake Takkobu during floods. The elevated sediment flux from the catchment dilutes the $^{210}Pb$ concentration in sampling points at the inflow of the Takkobu River and the lake outflow, which causes fluctuations in the $^{210}Pb$ concentrations in sediment cores. The $^{210}Pb$ dating was estimated using the CRS (Constant rate of Supply) model. The dates by the CRS model in Lake Takkobu profiles were in good agreement with the dates by $^{137}Cs$. Sedimentation rates reconstructed for the past 100-150 years suggested that sedimentation rates increased drastically following land use changes. While a natural sedimentation rate of $0.01-0.03g/cm^2/year$ is observed until the 1880s, whereas lake sedimentation accelerated to $0.03-0.09g/cm^2/year$ following land use changes such as deforestation and channelization, between the 1880s and 1940s. In particular, the sedimentation rates have been associated with deforestation, channelization, agricultural development and road construction, since the 1980s, and these rates were about 9-28 times higher than those under natural conditions, leading to accelerated lake shallowing.
Recently, there have been various domestic construction activities related to the reclamation of the dredged soils to expand the land use. However, the reclaimed grounds made of the dredged soils cause various problems due to highly compressible and low shear strength nature. Particularly, this nature induces huge problems in case of the harbor facilities and road construction on the reclaimed sites. Furthermore, in the reclamation activities, the marine dredged soils are often used instead of the well sorted sand, which induces problems of compressibilities. Therefore, in this study, the mechanical characteristics of artificial soil mixture of kaolinite representing the marine dredged soils and the pond ash. A large consolidometer is designed and manufactured to produce the artificial soil mixture. To represent various mixing ratio between the fly ash and bottom ash in the pond ash, six samples with the same stress history are made with different mixing ratio among kaolinite, bottom ash and fly ash. Isotropically consolidated and undrained compression tests are performed to investigate the shear characteristics of soil mixtures. Based on the experimental results, as the components of mixed ash increase, the friction angle increase and the cohesion values decrease. Also, the porepressure parameters at failure, Af increase with the mixing components of the pond ash. The portion of bottom ash has more impact on the shear behavior than that of fly ash.
Worldwide, soil compaction work is one of the most important activities that are carried out on civil engineering works sites. Compaction work, particularly in the area of road construction, is considered to be important, as poor compaction work is closely related with poor construction even after a construction is complete. Currently, the plate bearing test or the sand cone method relative to the unit weight of soil test are commonly used to measure the degree of compaction, but as these require a great deal of time, equipment and manpower, it is difficult to secure economic efficiency. The method that is used to measure the degree of compaction according to the penetration depth achieved by free fall objects through gravity is the Free-Fall Penetration Test (FFPT), which uses a so-called "portable compaction measuring meter (PCMM)." In this study, the degree of compaction was measured and a penetration depth graph was developed after the field test using the portable compaction measuring meter. The coefficient of determination was 0.963 at a drop height of 10 cm, showing the highest level of accuracy. Both horizontal axis and longitudinal axis were developed in a decimal form of graph, and the range of allowable error was ${\pm}1.28mm$ based on the penetration depth. The portable compaction measuring meter makes it possible to measure the degree of compaction simply, quickly and accurately in the field, which will ensure economic efficiency and facilitate the process management.
This study was aimed to minimized the impact force and vibration transmitted to transporting agricultural product from the power tiller trailer by installing vibration absorption device. The vibration absorbable trailer (I) mounted with leaf spring suspension and shock absorber was developed and compared on vibration absorption performance with the existing trailer (E) equipped no vibration absorption device. In order to identify the vibration absorption effect of the trailer developed in this study, the vibration accelerations, occurred during driving on paved road with loading 360 kg of pear, were measured and analyzed using FFT analyzer. The magnitude of average vibration acceleration was decreased highly for the improved trailer mounted with vibration absorption device in comparing with existing trailer in the frequency range under 60 Hz and under 80 Hz. And similar vibration absorption effect was represented for the improved trailer in all frequency range. Especially, in the frequency range between 40 Hz and 80 Hz, the magnitude of vibration acceleration for the improved trailer was decreased with 1/3 times in comparing with existing trailer. So, the transporting loss including damage of agricultural product could be decreased highly by using the improved vibration absorbable trailer mounted with leaf spring suspension and shock absorber simultaneously, designed in this study.
