  • Background: Particulate matter 10 (PM10; airborne particles <10 ㎛) inhalation has been demonstrated to induce airway and lung diseases. In this study, we investigate the effects of PM10 inhalation on RNA expression in lung tissues using a murine model. Methods: Female BALB/c mice were affected with PM10, ovalbumin (OVA), or both OVA and PM10. PM10 was administered intranasally while OVA was both intraperitoneally injected and intranasally administered. Treatments occurred 4 times over a 2-week period. Two days after the final challenges, mice were sacrificed. Full RNA sequencing using lung homogenates was conducted. Results: While PM10 did not induce cell proliferation in bronchoalveolar fluid or lead to airway hyper-responsiveness, it did cause airway inflammation and lung fibrosis. Levels of interleukin 1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and transforming growth factor-β in lung homogenates were significantly elevated in the PM10-treated group, compared to the control group. The PM10 group also showed increased RNA expression of Rn45a, Snord22, Atp6v0c-ps2, Snora28, Snord15b, Snora70, and Mmp12. Generally, genes associated with RNA splicing, DNA repair, the inflammatory response, the immune response, cell death, and apoptotic processes were highly expressed in the PM10-treated group. The OVA/PM10 treatment did not produce greater effects than OVA alone. However, the OVA/PM10-treated group did show increased RNA expression of Clca1, Snord22, Retnla, Prg2, Tff2, Atp6v0c-ps2, and Fcgbp when compared to the control groups. These genes are associated with RNA splicing, DNA repair, the inflammatory response, and the immune response. Conclusion: Inhalation of PM10 extensively altered RNA expression while also inducing cellular inflammation, fibrosis, and increased inflammatory cytokines in this murine mouse model.

  • The accurate object recognition is important for the precise and accurate manipulation. To enhance the recognition performance, we can use various types of sensors. In general, acquired data from sensors have a high sampling rate. So, in the past, the RNN-based model is commonly used to handle and analyze the time-series sensor data. However, the RNN-based model has limitations of excessive parameters. CNN-based model also can be used to analyze time-series input data. However, CNN-based model also has limitations of the small receptive field in early layers. For this reason, when we use a CNN-based model, model architecture should be deeper and heavier to extract useful global features. Thus, traditional methods like RN N -based and CN N -based model needs huge amount of learning parameters. Recently studied result shows that Fast Fourier Convolution (FFC) can overcome the limitations of traditional methods. This operator can extract global features from the first hidden layer, so it can be effectively used for feature extracting of sensor data that have a high sampling rate. In this paper, we propose the algorithm to recognize objects using tactile sensor data and the FFC model. The data was acquired from 11 types of objects to verify our posed model. We collected pressure, current, position data when the gripper grasps the objects by random force. As a result, the accuracy is enhanced from 84.66% to 91.43% when we use the proposed FFC-based model instead of the traditional model.

  • The concentrations of radon in the atmosphere were measured at the Gosan site of Jeju Island during 2017-2018, in order to investigate the time-series variation characteristics and the dependency of airflow transport pathways. The mean 222Rn concentration was 2,480 mBq m-3, and its monthly concentration in November was 3,262 mBq m-3, more than twice as that in July (1,459 mBq m-3). The diurnal radon concentrations increased throughout the nighttime to the maximum (2,862 mBq m-3) at around 7 a.m., then gradually decreased throughout the daytime by the minimum (1,997 mBq m-3) at around 3 p.m. The seasonal and monthly variations of CO, NO2, O3 showed a roughly similar pattern to that of radon for the same period, as high in winter and low in summer. The cluster back trajectory analysis described that about 60 % of overall airflow pathways was influenced by the airflow from China. The concentrations of radon and gaseous pollutants were relatively high as the airflow was influenced by China continent, but comparatively much lower as influenced by the northern Pacific Ocean.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of abdominal breathing on relieving anxiety in women diagnosed with preterm labor. Method: This was a pilot study, which was based on a repeated pre-post experiment design without a control group. Seven patients with preterm labor who were admitted to Y university medical center, Seoul, Korea, participated in the experiment. They were under receiving ritodrine hydrochloride(Yutopa) as tocolytic therapy and did not have any other complications. The patients were taught abdominal breathing, which is a modified version of Mason's breathing technique. The experimental treatments were done 33 times from February 18 to June 19 in 2005. Result: After abdominal breathing, the average psychological anxiety level decreased significantly. The physical anxiety levels of preterm labor patients were measured by blood pressure, pulse, and skin temperature. After abdominal breathing, the average systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 117.3mmHg to 107.6 mmHg (z=-3.85, p<.001) and from 67.3mmHg to 62.7 mmHg (z=-3.14, p<.005), respectively. The average pulse rate also decreased from 97.2/min to 89.8/mim (z=-4.76, p<.001). The average skin temperature increased from 94.0 to 94.9(z=-4.80. p<.001). Conclusion: Abdominal breathing is effective for relieving anxiety of women diagnosed with preterm labor. This study, however, has been limited to short-term effects, and therefore further studies are required in order to examine the long-term effects of abdominal breathing.

  • For every n ≥ 2, let ℝn‖·‖ be Rn with a norm ‖·‖ such that its unit ball has finitely many extreme points more than 2n. We devote to the description of the sets of extreme and exposed points of the closed unit balls of 𝓛(2n‖·‖) and 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖), where 𝓛(2n‖·‖) is the space of bilinear forms on ℝn‖·‖, and 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) is the subspace of 𝓛(2n‖·‖) consisting of symmetric bilinear forms. Let 𝓕 = 𝓛(2n‖·‖) or 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖). First we classify the extreme and exposed points of the closed unit ball of 𝓕. We also show that every extreme point of the closed unit ball of 𝓕 is exposed. It is shown that ext B𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) = ext B𝓛(2n‖·‖) ∩ 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) and exp B𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) = exp B𝓛(2n‖·‖) ∩ 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖), which expand some results of [18, 23, 28, 29, 35, 38, 40, 41, 43].

  • Currently, as the demand for stops in the urban increases resulting from an increase in the supply of express trains, the development of trains capable of operating both high-floor platforms in the urban and low-floor platforms in the suburbs is required. In this paper, we studied the design and fabrication of a controller for train doors that consists of low and high steps as a plug-in type door mechanism and thus can be used on low and high platforms. This DCU H/W was designed and implemented using 32 bit MCU to control 4 motors, 33 digital inputs and 16 digital outputs. In addition, based on the software life cycle of EN50128, 2 items of operation requirements and 12 items of control requirements were derived, and then they were designed and implemented as operation SW. The implemented SW was tested for each requirement. As a result, we performed tests on 13 items that could be tested in the mock-up out of 14 total requirement items and showed that the requirements were satisfied.

  • [Purpose] Numerous epidemiological studies have shown that it is possible to prescribe exercise for neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. However, despite the availability of diverse scientific knowledge, the effects of exercise in this regard are still unclear. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate a substance, such as black chokeberry (Aronia melanocapa L.) that could improve the ability of the treatment and enhance the benefits of exercising in neurodegenerative diseases. [Methods] The cell viability was tested with 2,3-bis[2-methyloxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2H-tetrazolim-5-carboxanilide and the cells were stained with ethidium homodimer-1 solution. The mRNA expression levels were evaluated by microarray. The active compounds of black chokeberry ethanolic extract (BCE) were analyzed by gas chromatography. The chemical shift analysis in the brain was performed using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. [Results] BCE treatment decreased hydrogen peroxide-induced L6 cell death and beta amyloid induced primary neuronal cell death. Furthermore, BCE treatment significantly reduced the mRNA levels of the inflammatory factors, such as IL-1α, Cxcl13, IL36rn, Itgb2, Epha2, Slamf8, Itgb6, Kdm6b, Acvr1, Cd6, Adora3, Cd27, Gata3, Tnfrsf25, Cd40lg, Clec10a, and Slc11a1, in the primary neuronal cells. Next, we identified 16 active compounds from BCE, including D-mannitol. In vivo, BCE (administered orally at a dosage of 50 mg/kg) significantly regulated chemical shift in the brain. [Conclusion] Our findings suggest that BCE can serve as a candidate for neurodegenerative disease therapy owing to its cyto-protective and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, BCE treatment is expected to prevent damage to the muscles and neurons of the athletes who continue high intensity exercise. In future studies, it would be necessary to elucidate the effects of combined BCE intake and exercise.

  • Purpose: This descriptive research study is intended to develop practical strategies for enhancing the quality of elderly care by evaluating the levels of ageism and compassion competence among clinical nurses and their impact on geriatric nursing performance. Methods: This study involved 162 nurses who provided direct care to elderly patients in a department with many such patients. Of the 161 returned questionnaires, 150 were analyzed, excluding 11 that had insincere or missing responses. To analyze the data, a comprehensive approach was employed using the IBM SPSS 27.0 program that included calculations of frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as more complex statistical tests such as the independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Results: Compassion competence was significantly positively correlated with elderly care and negatively correlated with ageism. This study conclusively demonstrates that compassion competence among nurses in geriatric nursing situations plays a crucial role in provision of quality nursing grounded in understanding and respect for the elderly. Consequently, it is imperative to develop educational strategies tailored to each career stage of nursing practice to further enhance effective elderly care.
