We investigated surface-roughness-dependent optical loss in a plasmonic cavity consisting of a semiconductor nanodisk/silver nanopan structure. Numerical simulations show that the quality factors of plasmonic resonant modes significantly depend on the surface roughness of the dielectric-metal interface in the cavity structure. In the transverse-magnetic-like whispering-gallery plasmonic mode excited in a structure with disk diameter of 1000 nm, the total quality factor decreased from 260 to 130 with increasing root-mean-square (rms) surface roughness from 0 to 5 nm. This quantitative theoretical study shows that the smooth metal surface plays a critical role in high-performance plasmonic devices.

Recently, lightweight materials such as Ti alloys have been used increasingly in the aerospace and high-tech industries for weight loss and fuel efficiency. Because of built-up edges and workpiece deflection due to low stiffness, the Ti alloys have poor machinability. In our study, systematic experiments were conducted to investigate the milling characteristics of the Ti alloy (Ti-6A1-4V) with endmills. The independent variables in the experiment were spindle speed, feed per tooth, and axial depth. Cutting force, acceleration RMS, and surface roughness were measured. Using the response surface method, the optimal cutting conditions were analyzed to improve machining quality and productivity.

Superhydrophobic $SiO_2$ thin films were successfully fabricated on a glass substrate by sol-gel method. To fabricate $SiO_2$ thin film with a high roughness, $SiO_2$ nano particles were added into tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) solution. The prepared $SiO_2$ thin film without an addition of $SiO_2$ nano particles showed a very flat surface with ca. 1.27 nm of root mean square (RMS) roughness. Otherwise, the $SiO_2$ thin films fabricated by using coating solutions added $SiO_2$ nano particles of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 wt% showed a RMS roughness of ca. 44.10 nm, ca. 69.58 nm, ca. 80.66 nm, respectively. To modify the surfaces of $SiO_2$ thin films to hydrophobic surface, a hydrophobic treatment was carried out using a fluoroalkyltrimethoxysilane (FAS). The $SiO_2$ thin films with a high rough surface were changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic surface after the FAS treatment. Especially, the prepared $SiO_2$ thin film with a RMS roughness of 80.66 nm showed a water contact angle of $163^{\circ}$.

To obtain the surface roughness with range from 10nm to 1nm we need the study of ultra-precision machine, cutting condition, and materials. In this paper, the optimal cutting conditions for getting mirror surface of aluminum alloy have been examined experimentally by using ultra-precision turning machine and sing1e crystal diamond tool. In generally, the cutting conditions such as feed rate and depth of cut have effect on the surface roughness in ultra-precision turning. The result of surface roughness was measured by the ZYGO New View 200. Therefore, The surface roughness and cutting conditions has been clarified. The smooth surface of aluminum alloy less than 1nm RMS, 1nm Rmax can be obtained by the ultra-precision cutting.

In this study, we investigated the evolution and reduction of the surface roughness during the high-speed chemical dry thinning process of Si wafers. The direct injection of NO gas into the reactor during the supply of F radicals from NF3 remote plasmas was very effective in increasing the Si thinning rate, due to the NO-induced enhancement of the surface reaction, but resulted in the significant roughening of the thinned Si surface. However, the direct addition of Ar and N2 gas, together with NO gas, decreased the root mean square (RMS) surface roughness of the thinned Si wafer significantly. The process regime for the increasing of the thinning rate and concomitant reduction of the surface roughness was extended at higher Ar gas flow rates. In this way, Si wafer thinning rate as high as $20\;{\mu}m/min$ and very smooth surface roughness was obtained and the mechanical damage of silicon wafer was effectively removed. We also measured die fracture strength of thinned Si wafer in order to understand the effect of chemical dry thinning on removal of mechanical damage generated during mechanical grinding. The die fracture strength of the thinned Si wafers was measured using 3-point bending test and compared. The results indicated that chemical dry thinning with reduced surface roughness and removal of mechanical damage increased the die fracture strength of the thinned Si wafer.

The ultra-precision cutting is a key technique for the manufacture of optical components such as aluminium mirrors, electroless nickel mirror, plastic mirror in a variety of advanced science and technology applications. The paper presents experimental results of ultra-precision diamond fuming of electroless nickel materials. In general, the cutting condition such as feed rate and depth of rut, have effect on the surface roughness in ultra-precision diamond turning. To obtain an optimal cutting condition, we studied the effect of the cutting speed. the tool length, the tool nose radius, the feed rate and depth of cut on the surface roughness. So, the relationship of the surface roughness and cutting condition has been clarified. From the experimental results, the machined surface roughnesses were obtained less than 1nm rms.
Scattering by Sea surface roughness occurs due to sea level roughness, communication performance deteriorates by causing frequency spread in communication signals and time variation in communication channels. In order to compare the difference in time variation of underwater acoustic communication channel according to the surface roughness, an experiment was performed in a tank owned by Hanyang University Ocean Acoustics Lab. Artificial surface roughness was created in the tank and communication signals with three bandwidths were used (8 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz). The measured surface roughness was converted into a Rayleigh parameter and used as a roughness parameter, and statistical analysis was performed on the time-varying channel characteristics of the surface path using Doppler spread and correlation time. For the Doppler spread of the surface path, the Weighted Root Mean Square Doppler spread (wfσν) that corrected the effect of the carrier frequency and bandwidth of the communication signal was used. Using the correlation time of the surface path and the energy ratio of the direct path and the surface path, the correlation of total channels was simulated and compared with the measured correlation time of total channels. In this study, we propose a method for efficient communication signal design in an arbitrary marine environment by using the time-varying characteristics of the sea surface path according to the sea surface roughness.

Morphological changes of polyarylate (PAR) fiber treated with formic acid and ultraviolet (UV) were observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The results were analysed by using root mean square (RMS) roughness. In addition, the chemical changes of surface was investigated using contact angle and the interfacial adhesive strength between PAR fiber and PEN (Polyethylene naphthalate) matrix was calculated using the Pull-out test results. As the acid treatment concentration and UV irradiation time increased, cracks and pores were produced on the PAR fiber surface. Due to the roughness increased, the contact angle was decreased. For this reason, RMS roughness of PAR fiber was increased and the interfacial adhesive strength between the PAR fiber and PEN matrix was improved. The increase of interfacial adhesive strength was responsible for the increase of surface area which have cracks and pores.
Purpose: This study aims to get the fundamental data which is necessary to the development direction of implant surface treatment hereafter, based on the understanding the surface structure and properties of titanium which is suitable for the absorption of initial tissue fluid by researching effects of additional surface treatments fir sandblasted with large git and acid-etched(SLA) titanium on surface micro-roughness, static wettability, fibronectin adsorption Materials and Method: In the Control groups, the commercial pure titanium disks which is 10mm in diameter and 2mm in thickness were treated with HCI after sandblasting with 50$\mu$m $Al_2O_3$. An experimental study on the grinding temperature, surface roughness and Acoustic Emission(AE) signals was conducted with different shapes of wheel. The grinding characteristics for slotted shapes of wheel changed by width and helical angle, were compared with those by general one. Lower grinding temperature was obtained for 30$^{\circ}$helical angle with 10mm width and Root Mean square(RMS) values of AE signals were lower for slotted shapes rather than general one. Surface roughness characteristics of slotted shapes found to be rough but the value of roughness for 45$^{\circ}$helical angel with 6mm width, represented to similar tendency general one.
