  • As analyzed the estimated values of the daily delivery loads from thirteen major side streams such as Naesung-river, Keumho-river, Hwang-river, Nam-river during five years (from 1999 to 2003), the daily BOD inflow into the main stream of Nakdong river in 2003 shows the highest quantity as 31.1 ton and the daily BOD inflows in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are 26.7 ton, 22.5 ton, 21.0 ton, 25.8 ton, respectively. The daily TN in-flow into the main stream of Nakdong river in 2003 shows also the highest quantity as 64.9 ton and the daily TN inflows in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are 55.19 ton, 46.27 ton, 39.5 ton, 53.38 ton, respectively. The daily TP inflow into the main stream of Nakdong river in 2003 shows the highest quantity as 2.70 ton likewise and the daily TP inflows in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are 2.17 ton, 1.87 ton, 1.60 ton, 2.10 ton, respectively The rate of BOD loads from each side main stream into the main stream of Nakdong river shows that the BOD loads of Keumho-river are the highest as the values range from 32.8 % (2002) ${\sim}$ 35.1 % (2003) and the BOD loads of Nam-river, Naesung-river, Hwang-river are high in the order named. The rate of TN loads to the main stream is also similar to the trend of BOD loads. The contribution of the TN loads of Geumho-river to the contamination of the main stream is also the highest having a range from 27.0 % (2002) to 28.8 % (1999) among the main side streams and the TN loads of Naesung-river, Nam-river, and Heachun-river are high in the order named. The rate of TP loads is quite different from the trend of BOD and TN loads. The TP rate of Keumho-river, however, is still the highest as ranging 58.6 % (2002) to 61.7 % (2003) and the river has the biggest portion (over 50%) of the entire pollution to the main stream of Nakdong river.

  • This study aims at the estimation of a river management flow in urban basin analyzing Sinchun basin to be the tributary of Kumho river basin. The river management flow has to satisfy a low flow as natural flow and an environmental preservation flow estimated by a dilution flow to satisfy a target water quality in drought flow. Therefore for the estimation of a river management flow in Sinchun in this study, first Tank model as a basin runoff model estimates a low flow, a drought flow from a flow duration curve in Sinchun, second QUAL2E model as water quality model simulates water quality in Sinchun and estimates environmental preservation flow to satisfy a target water qua%its, BOD 8 mg/l by a dilution flow derived from Kumho river, Nakdong river and around water. And the river management flow is estimated by addition of a use flow and a loss flow to more flow between a low-flow and an environmental preservation flow.

  • Derivation of stage-discharge relationship and characteristics for Yangsan river is presented in this paper. This research has been conducted as the second one after the first trial in 1997. The determination of discharge at a Yangsan river gauging was best made by measuring the flow velocities with a current meter and rod float. The rating curve obtained through 52 stage-discharge measurements on Yangsan river basin in 1999 is represented by Q=15.3540-140.6076H+182.44372H$^2$, which is discovered to be most excellent among other curves in reliability analysis. The observed stage-discharge data for Yangsan river was tested by HEC-RAS program, and reproduction of discharge by the induced curve was investigated and compared with the computational results. The rating curve of Yangsan river shows characteristics of Yangsan river more accurately compared with those separated in terms of water levels.

  • River otter(Lutra lutra) are listed as endangered species and Natural monument in Korea, and this study examined the possibility of extinct of river otter in Hongchon river using with the application of Population Viability Analysis (PVA) technique. In Hongchon river areas population was estimated 9 individuals for the last 1999-2005 years and PVA analysis was done for the next 10 years using the average population of 9. Using the initial population the river otter was estimated 30% of extinct for the next 10 years. This estimation was quite low considering water pollution and construction of highways. Also PVA only used population size lacking in other life history information. Nonetheless river otter population can be in risk of extinction if the current construction of crossovers, cement bank are maintained. Long term information regarding life history needs essential.

  • To study run-off characteristics in the small watersheds in Korea, investigations had been carried out for a period of 4 years from 1972 to 1975 in the sample watersheds. The samples were selected in four major river basins such as the Han River, the Keum River, the Nakdong River and the Yongsan River. Water levels and rainfall data had been. collected from each sample area where the measuring instruments were installed. The findings of this investigation can be summarized as follows; 1. With an average runoff rate of 60% in the sample watersheds, the average runoff rate. in each sample proved to be as below; the Han River Basin : 41.4% the Keum River Basin : 61.7% the Nakdong River Basin : 69.4% the Yong San River Basin : 69.2% 2. The base flow rate in the sample watersheds proved to be 8.1 mm/month. 3. A comparison of the runoff obtained from actual measurements made and that calculated by the Kaijyama formula showed that the latter is 9.1% lower than the former.

  • In this study, how branches of Kumho River affect to the water quality on Kumho River was investigated. Water samples from six sampling points at Kumho River and three at each branch were taken from Dec. 2009 to Dec. 2011. As results, Namcheon affected BOD and T-P concentrations on Kumho River while Sincheon did only T-P concentrations. However, the water quality of Kumho River was improved because of Sincheon in terms of BOD and COD concentrations. This was the results from management of Sincheon wastewater treatment facility and Jisan wastewater treatment facility which might be the best example for managing wastewater treatment facilities. Dalsecheon would not affect the water quality of Kumho River although it had bad conditions of water quality because of lack of its water quantity comparing to Kumho River's.

  • During typhoon periods, coastal regions are often directly flooded by typhoon-surges. There are also many cases where coastal regions are inundated by river inundations or dam breaks. However, most studies on coastal flooding by typhoons have been restricted to cases involving the sea. Flooding by river inundation has been excluded in those studies. Usually ocean numerical models are not applied to river flow because the governing equations for ocean flow and river flow are not the same. For a coastal flooding simulation with river inundation, POM, the three-dimensional numerical ocean model, was applied to the popular river flow problems, dam-break problem, and flows over a spillway. The simulated results showed good agreement with other numerical simulations and measured data, suggesting the possibility of using POM in coastal flooding simulations involving direct coastal surges and river inundations.

  • The purposes of this research were constructed the database, based on graphing the present water pollution in Han-river due to livestock wastewater(LSW). The LSW was below 1% in respect to quantity but about 7% in respect to pollutants loading in overall Han-river. The ratio of untreated LSW is 18% to 28%, which was higher compared to the municipal and industrial wastewater. In other words, LSW was about 0.05 times of municipal wastewater in respects to quantity but 2 times in respect to the ratio of untreated wastewater. So, it was necessary for treating LSW. The pollutants loading due to livestock wastewater of the South Han-river, North Han-river and main stream were 19.7%, 19.4% and 4.0%, respectively. This was about 7% in overall Han-river. We separated the Han-river into upper, mid and down stream. As a result, we found that the livestock wastewater is the main water pollution source of upper Han-river.
