  • This paper uses the numerical simulation to investigate the interference effect of 3-D turbulent flow around two high rise buildings in proximity at the different relative heights, gaps, and wind velocities. The computer program used to carry out the simulation is based on the control volume method and the SIMPLEST algorithm. The ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to simulate turbulence effects. Since the contracted flow between two adjacent buildings enhances the strength of vortex shedding from the object building, the pressure coefficient on each side wall of the object building is generally increased by the presence of apposed building. The effect is increased as the relative height or the gap between the two buildings decreases. The velocity on the vertical center line between two buildings is about 1.4 to 1.5 times the upstream wind velocity.

  • This paper deals with the potential interferences between grounding electrodes in various grounding electrodes. The ground potential rise and potential interference coefficients were measured by using and electrolytic tank and calculated by CDEGS program as functions of the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the distance between grounding electrodes. The ground potential rise and potential interference coefficient strongly depend on the distance between grounding electrodes, the shape and size of grounding electrodes. The potential rise interferences between grounding grid and grounding grid is lower than those between grounding grid and ground rod.

  • Main objective of the present study is to determine the statistical properties and suitable probability distribution functions of spectral displacements from nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis within the frame work of Monte Carlo simulation for typical low rise and high rise RC framed buildings located in zone III and zone V and designed as per Indian seismic codes. Probabilistic analysis of spectral displacement is useful for strength assessment and loss estimation. To the author's knowledge, no study is reported in literature on comparison of spectral displacement including the uncertainties in capacity and demand in Indian context. In the present study, uncertainties in capacity of the building is modeled by choosing cross sectional dimensions of beams and columns, density and compressive strength of concrete, yield strength and elastic modulus of steel and, live load as random variables. Uncertainty in demand is modeled by choosing peak ground acceleration (PGA) as a random variable. Nonlinear static analysis (NSA) and nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) are carried out for typical low rise and high rise reinforced concrete framed buildings using IDARC 2D computer program with the random sample input parameters. Statistical properties are obtained for spectral displacements corresponding to performance point from NSA and maximum absolute roof displacement from NDA and suitable probability distribution functions viz., normal, Weibull, lognormal are examined for goodness-of-fit. From the hypothesis test for goodness-of-fit, lognormal function is found to be suitable to represent the statistical variation of spectral displacement obtained from NSA and NDA.

  • For decreasing of the casualties and designing of the smoke control systems in the ultra high-rise building, the programs for analysis of smoke control were developed for prediction of smoke spread and distributions of pressure and temperature in building fire situation. In this study, coupling algorithm between mass and enthalpy conservations was modified for improving the applicability of the CAU_ESCAP which program can consider the energy transfer. The fire situation in ultra high-rise building was applied by using the modified CAU_ESCAP. Results of pressure difference predicted by modified CAU_ESCAP are higher than results of ASCOS as stack effect is generated due to the increasing of stairway temperature. Moreover, theoretically, the result of the neutral plane is more accurate than the result of ASCOS, in fire situation of ultra high-rise building.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a method for assessing a building's risk against disaster, tentatively named the Korean integrated disaster evaluation simulator (K-IDES). Based on previous studies, FEMA's risk management series and FEMA IRVS are selected as case studies for developing a frame work of K-IDES, through the comparative analysis of domestic building design guides, codes, and special acts related to disasters, in order to develop a risk assessment methodology for quantitative results. The assessment method consists of a classification system and calculating risk, and a simulation applying the developed checklist in K-IDES to similar types of high-rise buildings will be conducted to validate its accuracy. The final goal is to systemize an integrated risk management in a high-rise building against disasters for the purpose of recognizing vulnerable areas from the beginning of the design process and reinforcing it from potential threats after construction.

  • Although steel-reinforced concrete(SRC) is widely used in a high-rise building, a methods used to predict the column shortening of SRC structural members has many problems in applying a theoretical equation which considers only the material characteristics of reinforced concrete. In this study, the degree of accuracy of the existing method calculating the column shortening of a high-rise building is examined. For this, first, the actual measurement data are chosen about the column shortening of a high-rise building established with SRC structural members. Then the column shortening of a SRC structural member is calculated through computer program. Finally, the comparison between the measurement data and the analytical ones is executed. According to this study, it can be concluded that there is little difference between the former and the latter. Therefore, the existing method can be used to evaluate the column shortening of a high-rise building using a SRC structural members.

  • On the assumption of the rise of sea level, the inundation vulnerabilities on coastal areas of Korea are evaluated in different ways. The propose of this study is to find out the influences of sea level rise caused by global warming at Young-do coastal area, and to suggest the prevention schemes against the flooding damage caused by the sea level rise. The potential rates of sea level rise are assumed and with these rates the inundation vulnerabilities are simulated using CAD program. With the virtual maps, as the results of the previous CAD simulation, this study attempts to suggest the flood prevention schemes for each sector of damage-expected coastal area.

  • Recently in Korea, researches on seismic analyses for high-rise buildings in a large city have been increasing because earthquakes have occurred. However, the ground conditions are not included in most of seismic researches and analyses on a high-rise building. Also the influence of the predominant period of a seismic wave is not considered in reality. Therefore, in this study, the influence of the predominant period of a seismic wave on the dynamic behavior of high-rise buildings was analyzed based on the complete system model which can consider the grounds. For this purpose, 2D dynamic analyses based on a linear time history analysis were performed using MIDAS GTS NX, a finite-element based program. Dynamic behavior was analyzed in terms of horizontal displacements, drift ratios, bending stresses, and building weak zones. As a result, in overall, the dynamic response of a high-rise building become bigger as the predominant period of a seismic wave become longer. It was also found that the predominant period had a greater influence than other parameters, ground conditions and peak ground acceleration.

  • Today's high-rise buildings are increasing concern about the safety and evacuation of people related to the fire and threat from outside. Terrorism breaking out in high-rise buildings, a symbol of the national economy results in a number of casualties, economic loss, social fear and damage to national status. That's why high-rise building has also emerged as a target of major terrorist attacks, compared to other types of buildings. We have 54 high-rise buildings in 15 regions over the country. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Seoul Metropolitan Government have offered the guidelines to prevent terrorist attacks toward high-rise buildings. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has developed and taken advantage of the Risk Management Manual Series. According to this manual, pre-assessment is conducted for the prevention of terrorism and particularly in FEMA 455, risk of the surrounding areas, vulnerability, possibility from terrorist attacks are checked. After the check, experts classify the risk of terrorist attacks toward the high-rise buildings and according to the risk classification, architects, security experts and structure engineers can carry out terrorism prevention program for high-rise buildings. The U.K. NaCTSO has also offered the terrorism prevention guidelines. Therefore, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Seoul Metropolitan Government should make more concrete guidelines for high-rise buildings such as what U.S. FEMA and U.K. NaCTSO implement, including prior evaluation technique for terrorism risk.
