  • RFID systems have been widely used in various fields such as logistics, distribution, food, security, traffic and others. A RFID middleware, one of the key components of the RFID system, perform an important role in many functions such as filtering, grouping, reporting tag data according to given user specifications and so on. However, manual test data generation is very hard because the inputs of the RFID middleware are generated according to the RFID middleware standards and complex encoding rules. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a black box test technique based on RFID middleware standards. Firstly, we define ten types of input conversion rules to generate new test data from existing test data based on the standard specifications. And then, using these input conversion rules, we generate various additional test data automatically. To validate the effectiveness of generated test data, we measure coverage of generated test data on actual RFID middleware. The results show that our test data achieve 78% statement coverage and 58% branch coverage in the classes of filtering and grouping, 79% statement coverage and 64% branch coverage in the classes of reporting.

  • RFID has been used as an identification tool that substitutes for bar codes. Its areas of application are increasing due to its suitability in ubiquitous environment. In this paper, first, we review various aspects of RFID, including standards, characteristics, and relationships with wireless sensor networks. Then, we review the technical aspects of RFID and its areas of application, e.g., supply chain management (SCM) and manufacturing since 2005. SCM, in which RFIDs can shorten lead time and ensure the quality of products, is one of the most active application areas. Manufacturing is a relatively new area for RFID applications, but it is believed that it can enhance the productivity and the reliability of the products. Also, the authors suggest research issues and limitations of RFID, as well as possible application areas related to marine engineering.

  • An active radio frequency identification (RFID) system has the advantages of a long identification distance and a good identification rate, overcoming passive RFID drawbacks. Therefore, interest in the development of active RFID systems has been gradually increasing in areas of harbor logistics and national defense. However, some identification failures between active RFID systems developed under the same standards have been reported, presumably due to a lack of development of accurate evaluation methods and test equipment. We present a realization of the hardware and software of an emulator to evaluate the standard conformance of an active RFID system in a fully anechoic chamber. The performance levels of the designed emulator are analyzed using Matlab/Simulink simulations, and the applicability of the emulator is verified by evaluating the standard conformance of a real active RFID tag. Finally, we propose a new evaluation method by incorporating a self-running test mode environment into the RFID tags to reduce testing time and increase testing accuracy. The application of the suggested method to actual tags improves measurement uncertainty by 0.56 dB over that obtained using existing methods.

  • In this paper, a portable RFID reader which operated in 900MHz UHF band is designed and fabricated and the characteristics of the manufactured portable RFID reader is analyzed through measurement. Analysis of measurements results is achieved based on EPC Class 0 standards that proposed by EPC Global. The proposed RFID reader communicate with tags about 11kbps speed, and have 20 dBm for its maximum RF output power. The proposed portable RFID reader can recognize maximum 68 tags per second, and when reader's output power is 20 dBms, maximum recognition distance is 30cm. And the total size of implemented RFID reader is $71mm{\times}55mm$, that is the maximum 90%, minimum 14% reduced size compared with marketed product.

  • The national product identifier(NPI) currently used in the national product asset management system does not accommodate ISO or EPC standards due to the limitation of tag memory. For this reason, we propose a new NPI which accommodates not only ISO item identification standards but also the memory capacity of ISO tags. First of all, memory structures of ISO/IEC 18000-6C and EPC tags are analyzed from the view point of product identifier structure. Second, ISO/IEC 15459 and EPC identification standards as item identifier structures for the product asset management are analyzed. Third, based on these analyses, the NPI used for the current RFID-based product asset management system is analyzed and its problems are presented. Finally, a new NPI structure is proposed suitable for ISO/IEC 18000-6C and ISO/IEC 15459.

  • Logistics creates a boom in accordance with the recent new technique's development along with the recent RFID/USN of ubiquitous computing technique. The wave of 4PL(Fourth Party Logistics) that added the strategic consulting based on new IT techniques to logistics outsourcing through existing 3PL service with is a great issue. Moreover, the customer enterprises which contained manufacturers and distributors need the one stop service, therefore a method for effectively dealing with global logistics' environment changes is needed. Above all, a development of the 4PL system with RFID is very urgent. We developed the RFID u-4PL system progressed more than the present system, in which we applied many international standards. Finally, we constructed the web service based on Web 2.0 because of important condition of 4PL.

  • In this paper, u-FOS system is applied to field test in order to design the code structure based on standards and both 900MHz passive and 2.45GHz active RFID devices were used to test identification capacity in the field tests. For the stable RFID data obtainments, optimum speed of trucks and rail cars and most suitable tagging locations on them were resulted from field tests. The data obtained from ground logistics base and identified through the system is sent to u-FOS. Because the code structure is designed in the form of KKR code structure, this system can be implemented on RFID ODS network without difficulty. Therefore, we suggested the result as a guideline for corporations and government agencies to easily adopt the system.

  • Previous RFID systems exclusively manage the tags and readers for each company in individual manner. Thus, RFID system manager should understand and design specifications such as tag events, data format, and etc, based on individual companies. But it is very difficult to know all statements. To resolve theses problems, there has been conceptual research about policy-based RFID service management model that is not restrained from standards of typical RFID systems, including EPCglobal standard, and ISO/IEC standard. However, previous proposed service management model only aimed event management without including device management. Therefore, in this paper, we propose extended device management policy model for giving shape to the proposed policy-based RFID service management model. If the proposing device management policy model is used for device management, we can integrate control management for heterogeneous middleware, diverse RFID devices, and applications for each company. Moreover, we show that the RFID device management policy is translated and processed as an example using the proposing policy model in real-time RFID system.

  • RFID technologies have attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their cost/time-effectiveness in large-scale logistics, supply chain management (SCM) and other various potential applications. One of the most important issues of the RFID-based systems is how quickly tags can be identified. Tag collision arbitration plays a more critical role in determining the system performance especially for passive tag-based ones where tag collisions are dealt with rather than prevented. We present a novel tag collision arbitration protocol called Optimum Frame-Slotted Aloha (OFSA). The protocol has been designed to achieve time-optimal efficiency in tag identification through an analytic study of tag identification delay and tag number estimation. Results from our analysis and extensive simulations demonstrate that OFSA outperforms other collision arbitration protocols. Also, unlike most prior anti-collision protocols, it does not require any modification to the current standards and architectures facilitating the rollout of RFID systems.
