  • Free-space optical (FSO) communication is considered to be a potential solution to congestion in the radio-frequency spectrum and last-mile-access bottleneck issues in future cellular communication networks, such as 5G and beyond. However, FSO link performance may degrade significantly due to irradiance fluctuations and random temporal fluctuations from atmospheric turbulence. Therefore, in this work the main objective is to reduce the effect of the atmospheric turbulence by considering a multihop FSO communication system with amplify-and-forward relaying supported by a radio-frequency (RF) link, which form a hybrid FSO/RF communication system. The FSO link is assumed to follow the gamma-gamma fading model, which represents strong turbulence. Also, the RF link is modeled by a Rayleigh distribution. The performance of the considered system, in terms of the outage probability and average bit-error rate (BER), is investigated and analyzed under various weather conditions and pointing errors. Furthermore, the effect of the number of employed relay nodes on the performance of the system is investigated. The results indicate that the considered system reduces outage probability and average BER significantly, especially for low channel quality. Finally, the closed-form expressions derived in this work are compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations, for verification.

  • This paper investigates the performance of a hybrid single input multiple output radio frequency/free-space optics (SIMO-RF/FSO) communication system. Each SIMO-RF link is modeled as an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh distribution, while the FSO link follows a generalized $M{\acute{a}}laga$ (M) distribution. Considering the fixed gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and misalignment errors, novel expressions for the outage probability (OP), average bit error rate (ABER) and average capacity are derived. Numerical results show that atmospheric turbulence and misalignment errors can seriously impair the system performance, and the hybrid RF/FSO communication system using SIMO-RF links can greatly improve system performance. We also analyze system performance under different types of modulation schemes. Numerical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

  • In this paper, the intermediate frequency transmission signal level between the network system-based baseband and RF unit consisting of multi-channel airborne relay devices and a lot of mission devices, which are currently undergoing technology development tasks, is kept constant at the reference signal level. Considering the other party's receiving input range, despite changes in the short-range long-range wireless communication environment, it presents a multi-link protection and MLP-A algorithm that allows signals to be transmitted stably and reliably through signal detection automatic gain control, and experiments and analysis considering short-distance and long-distance wireless environments were performed by designing, manufacturing, and implementing RF units to which MLP-A algorithms were applied, and applying distance calculation equations to the configuration of multiple air movements and verification networks. Through this, it was confirmed that a stable and reliable RF communication system can be operated.

  • KOMPSAT-2 (Korea Multi Purpose Satellite 2) which is scheduled to launch in 2005 year will communicate with KARI TTC (Tracking, Telemetry, and Command) station flying along sun synchronous orbits (685 km). The command from KARI TTC passes S-band omni-antenna, RF assembly, and transponder and finally reachs OBC (On Board Computer). The telemetry from KOMPSAT-2 arrives at KARI TTC through inverse procedure. In this paper, RF compatibility test between KOMPSAT-2 and KARI TTC station is demonstrated. RF interface for this test was established through real space and uplink signal test and downlink signal test and uplink & downlink signal test were performed.

  • A hybrid free-space-optical/radio-frequency (FSO/RF) communication system is considered, with the help of amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. We consider various weather conditions to investigate their effects on the system's performance. We begin by obtaining the cumulative distribution function and probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio for the AF dual-hop FSO communication system with RF backup link. Then, these results are used to derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability, average bit-error rate, and average ergodic capacity. The results show that the considered system efficiently employs the complementary nature of FSO and RF links, resulting in impressive performance improvements compared to non-hybrid systems.

  • In this paper, Adjacent Channel Power Ratio (ACPR) of wireless Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) system interconnected with Radio over Fiber (RoF) link is analyzed for broadband convergence network applications. Unlike previous results, ACPR of the total link, which is involved with Radio Frequency (RF) amplifier as well as ROF link, at 5.8 GHz in IEEE 802.11a environment is simulated and compared at both system ends.

  • In this research, design and fabrication of marine repeater capable to extend communication coverage in monitoring system of fishing gear automatic identification, which is one of implementation method of the real-name electric fishing gear system declared by Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2016, is reported. The proposed marine repeater is fabricated in a form of RF repeater with interference cancellation system (ICS), which can cancel the oscillation due to feedback signal between service antenna and link antenna. In design process, we secure the isolation of 30 dB between service antenna and link antenna. It is confirmed that when the level of feedback signal into repeater input be lower of 15 dB than repeater gain, error vector magnitude due to oscillation can be lower than the performance criterion of 6%, from the test verification. It is expected that the service coverage will be extended by applying the developed marine ICS RF repeater into marine IoT network including monitoring system of fishing gear automatic identification.

  • A monitoring robot capable of doing network and RF communication is introduced. The robot has several features that poses arbitrary position thanks to a mechanism combining the 4wheel drive and 4 link mechanism, transmits an image and command data via RF wireless communication. Moreover, the image data from the camera are transferred through a network communication. The robot plays a role in monitoring what is happening around the robot, and covers wide range due to a moving camera associated with the 4 arms. The robot can adjust its mass center by the 4 link mechanism, hence it guarantees a stability in moving on the slope.

  • This paper discusses the design of bio-implanted ultra-low-power MICS RF transceivers for wireless sensor networks. The 400 MHz MICS standard was considered for the implementation of the WBAN wireless sensor system, indirectly minimizing radio propagation losses in the human body and the inference with surrounding networks. This paper includes link budget, various transmission and reception architectures for a system design and ultra-low power transceiver circuit techniques for the implementation of RF transceivers that meet MICS standards.

  • In this paper, we propose a unique systolic structure and communication algorithm that maintains a solid link between nodes using synchronous digital communication and enables low power communication. This system was designed by using CC2500 RF transceiver, CC2590 RF front end and C8051F330 low power microcontroller. The measurement of power consumption in the network link shows below $400{\mu}W$ in data transfer rate 320bps. The system constitutes the base unit of low power wireless network that was composed of each seven link nodes having eight sensor nodes. Results of the experiments show that link nodes using a 4Ah battery could operate over 3 years without replacement.
