The Effects of Hold-Relax Technique and Mulligan's Straight Leg Raise with Traction Technique on Flexibility of Shortened Hamstring (유지-이완 기법과 멀리건의 견인을 동반한 뻗은다리올림 기법이 단축된 넙다리뒤근의 유연성에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Mulligan's straight leg raise with traction technique and hold-relax technique on flexibility of hamstring in people with shortened hamstring. Methods: Thirty two subjects participated in this study. The subjects were assigned to either the Mulligan's straight leg raise with traction technique group (n=16) or the hold-relax technique group (n=16). 90-90 straight leg raise test was performed for evaluation of hamstring shortening at initial time of study. After intervention, immediate effect (immediately after intervention) and lasted effect (60 min after intervention) were assessed. Results: In the both Mulligan's straight leg raise with traction technique and hold-relax technique groups, significant improvements on flexibility of hamstring was observed in immediately and 60 minute after intervention (p<.05). However, there are no significant difference was observed between groups (p>.05). Conclusion: In the results of this study, both Mulligan's straight leg raise with traction technique and hold-relax technique show immediately and 60 minute after evaluation effectiveness in flexibility of hamstring of people with shortened hamstring. In addition, although the difference is not statistically significant, Mulligan's straight leg raise with traction technique was more increased average extension angle of knee joint at 90-90 straight leg raise test than the hold-relax technique.

The Influence of Contract.Relax Exercise on Functional Leg Length Inequality and Muscle Activity (수축-이완 운동이 기능적 하지길이 불균형과 하지 근활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate influence of contract-relax exercise on functional leg length inequality (FLLI) and muscle activity. Methods: The subjects were consisted of 40 healthy adults who had FLLI of which degree was at least 10mm. All subjects were randomly assigned to two groups : Contract-Relax Exercise (CRE) group (n=20), control group (n=20). The experimental group underwent CRE for 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Myosystem 1200 was used to measure the activity of rectus femoris and hamstring muscle. The tape measure method was used to measure FLLI. Statistical analysis was used repeated ANOVA know comparison of period, independent T-est know comparison of experiment group and control group. Results: All measurements for each subject took the following test : pre-test, post-test in 2 weeks, post-test in 4 weeks. The FLLI of the experimental group was significantly reduced according to within intervention period (p<0.05). Rectus femoris and hamstring muscle activity of the experimental group was significantly increased (p<0.05). Conclusion: The CRE can reduce FLLI and increase rectus femoris and hamstring muscle activity. Various contract-relax exercise for reduced of FLLI and the methods should be customized for the patients.

What is the Optimal Contraction Intensity and Duration in the Performance of Relaxation Techniques for Maximal Increase of Range of Motion? (관절가동범위 증진을 위한 이완 기법의 적절한 수축강도와 수축시간은?)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review articles in order to establish optimal contraction intensity and duration in the performance of relaxation techniques for maximal increase in range of motion. Methods: The Cochrane, EBSCO, Embase, Medline, ProQuest, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases were used to search articles from 1990 to January 2016. The search terms were "contract relax," "hold relax," "muscle energy technique (MET)," and "proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching." Only experimental human studies (randomized controlled trials) that compared the effects of varying intensity and duration of isometric contraction were included. Non-English language and unpublished studies were excluded. Results: A total of 2,156 articles were initially identified, with only five eventually meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three studies compared the effects of varying intensity in isometric contraction and two studies compared the effects of varying duration in isometric contraction with regard to range of motion (ROM). Two articles suggested that submaximal voluntary isometric contraction was more effective than maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) in the improvement of ROM. One article showed that a longer contraction time led to greater increases in ROM. Conclusion: Submaximal voluntary isometric contraction was recommended during contract-relax exercises in healthy people. Lack of evidence makes it difficult to suggest the optimal duration of isometric contraction during relaxation techniques. For future research, high-quality evidence will be needed to establish the optimal contraction intensity for maximum improvement of ROM.

Effects of Short-term Application of Contract-Relax and Passive Stretching on the Length Adaptation in Harmstring Muscles (수축-이완과 수동신장 기법의 단기 적용이 슬괵근의 길이 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: Few studies have reported on the flexibility of the hamstrings resulting from variable stretching method, and little studies of length adaptation at 1 day after intervention. Methods: Fifty-four healthy a woman in her twenties with no history of musculoskeletal or neurogenic disorder volunteered for this study. Subjects were randomly assigned to either a contract-relax group or a passive stretching group. Methods: Hamstring flexibility was measured with a sit and reach test(SRT) (RF-D18; SPC) before, immediatly after interventions, and 1 day after interventions. Results: Flexibility scores for participants in each of the groups significantly increased from pre-interventions to immediate and 1 day after interventions. However, the length of 1 day after interventions was shorter than immediate length after interventions. Difference in length between immediate and 1 day after interventions was some shorter in the contract-relax group versus the static group but, not significantly. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that a contract-relax is an effective length adaptation of hamstring muscles by 1 day after intervention.

  • This paper introduces a signal processing technique for discrimination of missile target. In order to detect and discriminate the target, a seeker radar makes use of chirp waveform and stretch processing to generate high resolution range profiles(HRRPs). RELAX(relaxation) algorithm, which is one of the spectral estimation techniques, was used to find scattering centers of a missile from HRRP. From the information on the distribution of one-dimensional(1-D) scattering centers on a target, we can discriminate the target without noise.

The Effect of Hold-Relax Technique and Cryotherapy on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (유지-이완기법과 냉치료가 지연성 근육통에 미치는 효과)

  • Despite research to treat delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), no effective treatment has been reported. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a hold-relax technique and cryotherapy on DOMS. Thirty-three subjects were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: control, hold-relax technique, or hold-relax technique and cryotherapy. DOMS was induced in the non-dominant biceps muscle through repeated eccentric contractions. Resting elbow joint position, flexion and extension (universal goniometer), pain (Visual Analogue Scale; VAS), and WBC count (blood analysis) were measured one hour before DOMS was induced and 24, 48, and 72 hours after DOMS was induced. The data were analyzed by repeated measure of two-way ANOVA. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1) While analysis showed no significant differences between groups in relation to a resting elbow joint position, there were significant differences over time, especially at 24, 48 hours after DOMS was induced compared with resting elbow joint position before DOMS was induced. 2) While analysis showed no significant differences between groups in relation to range of flexion, there were significant differences between range of flexion before DOMS was induced and range of flexion 72 hours after DOMS was induced. 3) There were no significant differences between groups or over time in relation to range of extension. 4) While analysis showed no significant differences between groups in relation to VAS, there were significant differences over time in different hours. 5) There were no significant differences between groups or over time in relation to WBC count. 6) There were no interactions between groups or over time in all variables. This results suggested that hold-relax technique and cryotherapy were not effective to reduce DOMS.

Immediate Effects of Using the PNF Contract-Relax Technique in the Close Kinetic Chain Position on the Gait Ability and Gastrocnemius Muscle Tone of Stroke Patients (닫힌 사슬 자세에서의 PNF 수축-이완 기법이 뇌졸중 환자의 장딴지 근육 긴장도와 보행능력에 미치는 즉각적 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the immediate effects of using the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) contract-relax technique in the close kinetic chain position on the gait ability and gastrocnemius muscle tone of stroke patients. Methods: The subjects were patients who had strokes due to cerebrum infarction and hemorrhage. The subjects participated in exercise with the PNF contract-relax technique in the standing-on-elbow position with a high table, and the affected lower leg was placed in the posterior position. The PNF contract-relax technique was applied at the position in which the ankle plantar-flexors were in a sufficiently elongated position. After performing twice in each range, while the muscle was elongated, the affected side was moved further back and a new range was set. In each session, the time of contraction was set to 8 seconds, and the resting time was set to 5 seconds; however, if the patient felt tired, they received more resting time during the intervention. The Myoton Pro and 10 m walking test were used to measure the muscle tone and gait ability both pre- and post-intervention. Results: After participating in the program, the muscle tone decreased and the gait ability improved in the ankle plantar-flexors, as determined by the Myoton Pro and 10 m walking test. Conclusion: The PNF contract-relax technique can help to decrease muscle tone in ankle plantar-flexors with hypertonus and increase the gait ability in stroke patients.

The Effectiveness of the Direct and Indirect Contract-Relax Technique in PNF (고유수용성신경근촉진법(PNF) 수축-이완 기법의 직접적 간접적 방법의 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of direct and indirect methods of contract-relax techniques in proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching for improving hamstring flexibility. Methods: Twenty-six subjects were randomly assigned to either a direct contract-relax technique group or an indirect contract-relax group. For each group, stretching intervention was performed three times a week for a period of two weeks, with 12 seconds for the contraction and 10 seconds for the relaxation per once. The direct contract-relax technique for hamstring flexibility was applied by asking the subject to press down on the shoulder of the trainer in the straight leg-raising position. Conversely, the indirect contract-relax technique was performed by raising the leg with resistance. To facilitate a comparative analysis of hamstring flexibility between the two groups before and after the stretching intervention, two-way repeated ANOVA was performed. Hamstring flexibility for each group was measured using a passive straight leg-raising test. Results: The results showed significant improvement in hamstring flexibility for all subjects in the two groups. However, there was no significant difference between the groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, both direct and indirect contract-relax techniques are confirmed to be useful for improving hamstring flexibility. The choice of suitable technique has to be made individually according to the condition of each subject.

Comparison Study of Air Temperature by Green Condition and Relative Humidity (녹지 조건에 따른 기온 및 상대습도의 비교연구)

  • We observed air temperature and relative humidity in the green space why this research graspes effect of climate relax by coverage condition and height difference tree in green space of the 4ha scale. With this data, analyzed relationship of coverage and air temperature or relative humidity distribution, number of tree and climate relax by revolution analysis. In this result, higher zone formed barren area, lower zone did forest and surround grassland. Relative humidity have corresponding type of air temperature distribution. higher air temperature zone was lower humidity and lower zone was higher humidity. Coverage condition effect climate relax by increasing forest and grassland. and increasing number of tree effect climate relax no related hight of tree. This efficiency order of an arbor, subarbor.

Domestic Space Usage and Behavioral Patterns in Belgium (II) -With Special Reference to the Dutch Speaking Community- (벨지움의 주거공간 사용행태에 대한 연구 (II))

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between the various types of activities occurring in domestic space and the resident's characteristics in Belgium. Data for this study was collected by questionnaires mailed to 133 staff member. both academic and administrative. working at The Free University of Brussels. a university serving the Dutch speaking community in Belgium. General leneal model and Duncan test were used in analyzing the data. The major findings of the study can be summarized as follows: First. families in the life-cycle stage of having no children are more likely to relax and watch T.V. and do housework in the master bedroom than those in the launching stage. Families in the life-cycle stage of elementary school are more likely to eat meals in the kitchen than those in the launching period. Second. families made up two members and under tend to do more housework in the master bedroom than those of three and over. Third. those with aged 30 and under are more likely to relax and watch T.V., and to do housework in the master bedroom than those with aged 51 and over. Forth. the renter status of homeownership tend to more relax and watch T.V., and to do housework in the master bedroom than the owner Fifth. those living with less floor space tend to relax and watch T.V. in the master bedroom more than those with larger residences.
