The purpose of this study was to investigate the ecological impact of wetlands by changing the species diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates and birds following the creation of an artificial wetland with a size of 30 m*30 m on bare land in reclaimed land in Haenam-gun, Korea. We investigated monthly fauna of benthic macroinvertebrates and birds in and outside wetlands and physicochemical indicators for 7 months from March to September 2014. During the study period, the water temperature and dissolved oxygen levels were consistently higher in wetlands than lakes. Many species of benthic macroinvertebrates were observed in summer (16 species in July) due to seasonal effects, and the species diversity index was highest in July and then gradually decreased. Thirteen species of birds were observed in March, 6 species in April, 5 species in July, and 1 species in June, where most winter birds and migratory birds were observed around wetlands in spring. The species diversity index also decreased after being high in July except for spring. This suggests that the abiotic environment in the wetland can be improved by creating an artificial wetland in the reclaimed land, and the increase in benthic macroinvertebrates can ultimately be a basic direction to restore the wetland ecosystem in the reclaimed land.
This study summarizes the use of satellite data to detect the change of southwestern coastal wetlands in Korea. The images used for this study were two Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM) images (June 12, 1984 & June 2, 1992). TM images were used to classify such different types of wetlands as aquatic bed, nonaquatic bed and other land use in the region. Then it, was possible to a) determine the status of wetlands using image classification products, and b) detect the changes of various types of wetlands influenced by both human and nature. The results from spatiotemporal analysis showed that approximately 120 lad of coastal wetlands were lost from the year of 1984 to 1992. 71 % of the lost wetlands were converted to the reclaimed land. This loss of wetlands has been causing the profound environmental impacts. It has been successfully proved that satellite data are very effective for spatiatemporal change analysis, especially for that of coastal wetlands.
This article is based on the findings of problems and limits in implementing integrated coastal management strategy in Shihwa Lake area to develop management framework, mechanisms and processes that insure the participation of various stakeholders in making decisions for sustainable development of reclaimed land. The project performance of the Shihwa Comprehensive Management Plan for Water Quality and Environment Restoration formulated in 2001 was evaluated and reviewed to give some valuable guidance for reducing the wide gap between integrated planning and implementation. Managing inter-sectoral conflicts among future land uses in Shihwa reclaimed area is one of the most important issues to make progress in integrated coastal management. There is a urgent need of developing scientific decision-supporting tools for evaluating the alternative scenarios as well as capacity building programs for local stakeholders.
Floral study and present vegetation survey were conducted at a representative reclaimed wetland located behind the Rural Research Institute at Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. The importance values were calculated from the ground cover and frequency of recorded species within quadrats and detrended canonical correspondence analysis was conducted using environment variables, such as total nitrogen, electric conductivity, available phosphate, nitrate nitrogen and the distance from the inner roads. And basal areas for the trees encroaching on the reclaimed wetland were estimated to take a look at the on-going situation about the succession routes on land. As a result, 46 families and 158 species of plants were recorded and Pragmites communis was found to be a dominant species as the present vegetation. The ordination analysis results showed that species distribution was purposely explained by total nitrogen in soil and its content in nitrate nitrogen. The invasion of Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus rigida whose basal areas were $22.3m^2$ and $1.6m^2$ respectively, into the interior areas of the reclaimed wetland was found to cause a disturbance making some parts of the wetland into land. The zoning program using water level control and migratory roads is becoming a contributing factor in destroying a wetland, so it's suggested that some adjustments should be needed to take care of it.

A prototype of 76 ha Shi-hwa constructed wetland was constructed for the first time in Korea to purify severely polluted stream water. Hydrology, vegetation(macrophyte) and water quality for Banwol and Donghwa wetland built in Shi-hwa tidal reclaimed area were monitored to evaluate the performance of the wetlands. The overall efficiency for the treatment of polluted stream water using the wetlands showed no significant improvement. The monthly average removal rates on SS, BOD, TN and TP for Banwol and Donghwa wetlands showed 66.5% and 62.8%, 14.8 and 34.3%, 33.9 and 47.1% and 20.8 and 51.6%, respectively. It is considered that three major factors, ie. wide fluctuations in inflow rate, short hydraulic retention time and small open area compared with vegetated area could have a great influence on low system efficiency.
Wetland awareness is a crucial factor for wetland conservation and management. A multidisciplinary approach is needed for the understanding of wetland awareness as associated with history, culture, and social-economics of human society. In addition, a historical investigation of the causes and areas of destruction is important. Therefore, the aim of this study was to confirm how people understood and managed wetlands in the Joseon Dynasty using historical records (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty). Approximately twenty words were found in the historical records that were used to indicate and describe wetlands and/or wet soil conditions. Most records of wetlands have a negative context. This negative attitude towards wetlands could have influenced wetland use. Most wetlands had been converted to cultivation areas especially rice paddies although some wetlands, which were used for irrigation of cultivated crops or reclaimed as cultural land had been specially managed. Because wetlands were poorly drained soil and were located near streams or rivers, they were culturally important within the environment as water for rice paddies.

This study was carried out on Sihwa reclaimed area from January to December in 2003. We observed total 169,351 individuals of 70 species(22 species of waders, 9 species of egrets and 5 species of gulls). Waterbird population was the largest in March(95,465 individuals) and was the smallest from April to June(less than 7,000 individuals). The most dominant species was Pintail(Anas acuta: 58,627 individuals, 34.6%) and other species were Mallards(Anas platyrhynchos: 24.5%), Common Pochards(Aythya ferina: 13.8%), Black-tailed Gulls(Larus crassirostris: 6.1%), Spotbill Ducks(Anas poecilorhyncha: 5.0%) and Greater Scaups(Aythya marila: 2.69%). Sihwa reclaimed area supported many kinds of protected species such as Chinese egrets(Egretta eulophotes), Black-faced Spoonbills(Platalea minor), Eurasian Spoonbills(Platalea leucorodia), Mute Swans(Cygnus olor), Whooper Swans(Cygnus cygnus), and Eurasian Oystercatchers(Haematopus ostralegus). They foraged at waterside of Sihwa lake and rested at reclaimed area. Particularly, Eurasian Oystercatchers bred in habitats with Salicornia herbacea and Suaeda japonica. Reclamation of mud flats and construction of roads, transmission towers and tide embankments disturbed waterbirds in breeding and foraging. We suggest that waterbirds are protected in different action plans according to their status such as breeding, passaging and wintering birds. Maintaining of waterside and swamps in Sihwa reclaimed area will be useful for breeding waterbirds. It is needed to make a protect zone for ecological connecting belt from Oeji isarea, Hyeong isarea, Eum isarea to upper channel on Sihwa lake.

Wetland is the ecotone between aquatic ecosystem and land ecosystem, and is much valuable in terms of ecology and economic. The stream wetland among inland fresh wetlands occupies the largest area but has been recognized as only a channel not a habitat. The purposes of this paper are to consider the characteristics of natural wetlands formed in the tributary flowing into the downstream reach of Nakdong River and to find its optimal management policy. Natural wetlands in the middle-size streams (2nd${\sim}$3rd order) are large marshlands, and were formed at the places from the mainstream away, because natural wetlands were formed in the reach of longitudinal profiles during the last glacial and the post-glacial period meet in disharmony. In order to conserve these natural wetlands effectively, we should compile the inventories of wetlands and make precise distribution maps. And we should do 'reverse-reclamation' which means the alteration of some farmlands reclaimed from natural wetland into natural wetland ecosystem, and develop the place or the space for wildlife education and ecotourism.

Sea level rise caused by climate change has become a global issue. Sea level rise seems to be an important factor of the research for coastal areas as it affects topography and vegetation of coasts and especially for the plan of coastal wetlands restoration which needs to be carried out for a long term, it has to be considered sufficiently. The coastal wetlands in Korea was damaged by the land reclamation project but recent concerns on the restoration have increased as its value is evaluated highly. Suncheon Bay had also reclaimed from wetlands to rice field once however this site is very active for restoration nowadays. This study estimated an effect according to sea level rise by 2100, reappearing the none dike condition of Suncheon Bay so that it can be taken account of a future plan of wetland restoration. The Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model(SLAMM) was selected as predicting model. The input data such as DEM(Digital Elevation Model), slope, wetlands category, sea level rise senario, tidal range and accretion rate was applied for the simulation. The results showed a decrease in tidal flat, an increase in sea area and a change of the rice field to transitional salt marsh consistently by 2100. These results of this study could be used as baseline data in the future plan of ecological restoration in Suncheon Bay.

This study was conducted to utilize as basic information for the construction of conservation and estimation system for Palustrine wetland, which was badly managed and imprudently reclaimed, through the analysis of distribution characteristics and the estimation of conservation value for sample sites (eight wetlands) in rural area. As the result of wetland type classification, these wetlands was classified by 4 types (Permanent freshwater marshes/pools, ponds, Aquaculture ponds, and Seasonally flooded agricultural land) by Ramsar system, 3 types (Emergent Wetland, Aquatic Bed, and Scrub-Shrub Wetland) by NWI (Cowardin) System, 5 types (Farm Pond Depression, Under-flow wetland, Man-made Pond Depression, Abandoned Paddy Fields Wetland, and Reservoir Shore) by National Wetland's Categorical System, and 3 types (Aquatic Bed Wetland, Emergent Wetland, and Forested Wetland) by Lee (2000) System. These results suggest us developing the new type classification system for small Palustrine wetland in Korean rural areas. The score of function assessment (The Modified RAM) for small Palustrine wetlands was high at the wetlands nearby hills and rice paddy fields, and low at those nearby upper fields, which was mainly affected by land-use and vegetation. The functions as 'Flood/Storm Water Storage', 'Runoff Attenuation', 'Water Quality Protection' were resulted by the structural difference of inflow and outlet. Some functions as 'Wetland size', 'Wetland to immediate watershed ratio', 'Presence of boat traffic', 'Maximum water depth', 'Fetch of water's body' of RAM were not appropriate in evaluation of small wetlands in rural area. Which suggest us developing the new function assessment system for small Palustirne wetland in Korean rural areas.
